Love it so far ![](https://www.oehling.cz/data/imgs/07/0079707l.jpg) Holy Pentaprism! That is the mirrorless. I guess that whatever camera you had before was with an OVF. How is it going EVF? I read that the one in the Z series is quite good, but I haven't tried one yet.

So out of curiosity, what improvements are you expecting over the tube DAC kit that you bought not that long ago? Have you actually listened to the incoming DAC somewhere?

I read that the one in the Z series is quite good, but I haven't tried one yet. This EVF is one of the few reasons I choose Z6 over a7III. It's really that good, surprisingly for myself I like it more then my previous D610's OVF. Other big things are Picture quality and IBIS. Also Nikon's new ergonomic is very good. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Our tweeters are properly referred to as "folded ribbon tweeters" (the concept is now used by several manufacturers, but I believe the term "air motion transformer" may still be copyright its original owner). A "true ribbon tweeter" consists of a flat super-thin metal ribbon suspended in a magnetic field (they tend to sound nice, but are usually very expensive, and very delicate). A "planar" tweeter consists of a flat sheet of plastic with a metal voice coil printed on it suspended in a magnetic field (Magenplanars are planar speakers). Some people use the terms interchangeably - but technically they are different.
Our tweeter, and the original Heil AMT, are folded ribbons.... a folded ribbon consists of a sheet of plastic, with a voice coil printed on it, folded into accordion pleats, and suspended in a magnetic field.
It works by squeezing air out from between the pleats, which means that it is able to get the air to move faster than the surface of the plastic moves, which is why they sound so clear and clean.
In the very old days, the original Heil AMT was quite large, somewhat delicate, and required very powerful magnets, which were large and heavy. The modern versions use a space-age plastic film called polyimide, which is extremely tough and light (and usually that characteristic amber color)... Modern units also use neodymium magnets, which are much smaller, yet significantly more powerful, compared to the original magnets (which were either AlNiCo or ferrite).
Are those Air-motion-transformer tweeters considered ribbons or is a ribbon different?

I'm only familiar with the ribbons of the old Carver 'ironing board' speakers, I found them shrill. I will have to see if I can find some Emo speakers in my area to listen to. I've been looking at and considering the Emotiva C2.

Last few month I've been looking for line/headphone preamp for my 2-channel setup. Eventually stumbled across this one: ![](https://ucarecdn.audiogon.com/42b9dd94-4ac8-4d70-aee8-8f73b5f77c9d/-/scale_crop/840x630/center/-/quality/lightest/) This is - Audible Illusions L1 (cost me just $750) Man it's sound unbelievably good to my ears! btw seller posted link that same like this (but with phono card) preamp was selected as one of the 12 most significant preamplifiers of all time by The Absolute Sound. Stereophile listed it #31 in its list of 100 Most Important Audio Products of the Past 40 Years I can't stop listening it for a week now Is that audio addiction?!

After my interest shifted mainly towards HT, I sold it; however, it brought a smile to my face everytime I used it. Enjoy!!!

From about 1986 to 1999 I had a pair of Apogee Duetta Mk. II's (Apogee long folded since, not the tweeters ;-)) It was a full ribbon speaker, 2-way, the tweeter/midrange similar to what you have describe, and the woofer taking up most of the unit, about 5 foot tall, 2 to 2.5 (?) feet wide, a trapezoid. The woofer ribbons went back and forth horizontally from top to bottom, heavy magnets behind them, the tweeter/midrange was vertical, a single ribbon an inch or so wide. It was one sweet speaker. They made a more expensive unit, even taller and wider, with separate tweeter and midrange ribbons, I think about $10k. Mine was pretty heavy at around 95 pounds each, in a classic powdered deep grey finish. They came out with one more version of it, and allowed a multitude of finishes - if I had waited I could have had green marble! ... A "true ribbon tweeter" consists of a flat super-thin metal ribbon suspended in a magnetic field (they tend to sound nice, but are usually very expensive, and very delicate). ...
