Having gone without electricity for days on several occasions while living in Florida, most recently Hurricanes Irma(2017) and Michael(2018), I thought it about time I invested in an inverter generator to power the necessities like the refrigerator, fans, TV, cable modem and such. Last year it seemed about half of my neighborhood had run out after the storm and bought up what generators were available, so I thought I'd do a little research and be prepared for the next such power outage/storm. It has good ratings & reviews and I didn't pay an arm and a leg, but then again I'm not connecting it via a "transfer switch" to my electrical panel. I lost twice the amount in food the last two outings compared to the $530 I paid for this, so all in all I think it a good investment.

Looks Nice! We’ve been put on notice that during fire season our power could be shut off, so I’m in the market too. But I’m going to need more power Scotty!

I ended up choosing an inverter as opposed to a conventional for the less fuel usage and quieter running as well as just needing the essentials powered during an outage. Are you looking for a “whole house” generator that you’ll be connecting to your house panel through a transfer switch?

I like the idea of the quiet running inverter, but we have a few requirements that will lead us to something different. We’ll need a transfer switch as we’ll have the generator in the pole barn, connected through a sub panel in the garage, so whole house capable. Needing potentially days of operation we want dual fuel, specifically propane and gasoline, letting us connect to our 500 gallon propane tank and not worry about refilling during blackouts. That in itself seems to push the choices to higher power, though I don’t see getting something really expensive like a Generac, because I don’t really know how much we’ll use it. I’m still watching the noise specs, but nothing as quiet as an inverter.

I also chose this route since I can still add another inverter to run a parallel kit to increase output if I find I need/want that later. Learning process for sure, though I feel this is a necessary need and investment living here in Florida, it’s one I don’t want to have to use.

You will find that when the power is restored, it will always happen immediately after filling the fuel tank and checking the oil! Note, always shut off the fuel and run the motor till it stops, this will keep the carburetor from gumming up. Many people know this but there’s always a few that don’t. This was for them. Nice purchase, hope you never need it! 🙏 I’ve needed mine more then I care for, but greatful I own one. Gone through a couple of them in the past 20 years.

This is still a viable option for me. It’s astounding to me that many homeowners have no clue what breakers control what, and this is necessary in these types of situations. I actually took the time to label all outlets and switches on the inside of the wall plate to identify the breaker as well as the major appliances.

Some generators don’t have a fuel shut-off, but a way to drain that fuel in the carb. Personally they all should have a fuel shut-off. Fuel stabilizer is also a good idea if you’re going to leave fuel in the tank.

The good food to keep me on target! Not a single unhealthy item in the bunch! Except for the, looks like, orange juice. I used to drink it every day. Too much sugar! Oranges, mandarins, satsumas themselves are much healthier. Lots of water is very good! Keep up the great work! (I'm down 43 lbs in 5 months, from 42 to 34 size jeans, feel great for an old fart!)

Fuel stabilizer is also a good idea if you’re going to leave fuel in the tank. I wasn’t clear, turn the fuel cutoff to the off position and run until the motor stalls and the line is dry. This has worked for me for years! No gunny carburetor.

View AttachmentAwesome work Chuckienut. Yeah the Orange juice is an experimenter, and other juices are on the menu soon. 43 lbs in 5 months is awesome. You are proof it can be done. All the ones not doing it. Why? Great health is a choice, and starts with you! You are one of the reasons I am pushing for results, not excuses. I have another friend who is ex special forces and he is a powerful rail. Other close friends and my brother encourage me too. Attitude, and desire are the start to great things. Dedication and execution and discipline make it happen! Some of my friends are way too complacent and idle. Their choice, I can only do so much. I can't live their health for them. Too busy my with my own. Again so very well done Chuckienut. Keep up the awesome work!
