About 3 years ago I started putting together a 7.0 setup of the old Emotiva Reference series speakers. Started off with a set of ERM-6.2's from a garage sale at Emotiva which Lounge member "geebo" found for me, then got a second set of unused NIB ERM-6.2's from a local Emotiva Lounge member friend, "tbro49". Fast forward to two weeks ago when I re-visited Lounge member "soupial" 's "For Sale" thread only to buy his ERT-8.3's and had them shipped across the US from California to Florida, and then that same evening I found the center channel, an ERM-6.3, from another old "For Sale" thread from Lounge member "madkaw" in North Carolina. I had always thought the ERM-6.2's were one of the best bookshelf size speakers I'd ever heard, and should've jumped on this full setup when Emotiva discontinued their old Reference line of speakers. Since 1998 I've been the proud owner of a Klipsch Legend and Reference speaker setup and have enjoyed them immensely for 22 years, but have been wondering for the past 5 years or so how a non-horn speaker would sound in my home theater/living room. So after two weeks of listening, I'm finding these old Emotiva Reference speakers to be way more refined, the mid-range is way more defined/precise and the highs most definitely roll off and are much more smoother compared to the horns that I have been accustomed to for so many years. The ERT-8.3's have a tight sounding bass compared to the Klipsch Legend wooders that go much deeper, thus the ERT-8.3's definitely need to be supplemented with subwoofers. Anyhow, I'm finding a full setup of timbre matched speakers, which I only had LCR's matched before, to be a more seemless experience, especially listening to music. This new "sound" has already begun to grow on me, so I'm looking forward to getting more acquainted with these speakers in the months to come. I've gotta say I've found great sounding and well built speakers for < $1,000 total, but it took a lot of patience to finally complete the set.

I've gotta say I've found great sounding and well built speakers for < $1,000 total, but it took a lot of patience to finally complete the set. I own them since 2011 and really enjoyed every listening session from the beginning. The biggest difference between them and the most majority of speakers is their sealed boxes construction instead of bass reflex. To my ears, I prefer this, it results in a tighter and fast transient response like we can easily heard the difference between sealed and ported subwoofers, resulting for music in more natural, live and dynamic sounding, to my ears and taste. I think that the majority of speakers makers actually prefer bass reflex design because it can easily reach lower frequency and it's looking good in the spec's, but what's the need if we combine a subwoofer with. Once again I myself prefer fast transient and control for frequencies over 50Hz and let the sub working bass. I was a bit disappointed when I saw this Emo Reference series discontinued because it was one of the last sealed boxes series of speakers available on the market.

You couldn't pry my five original Emotiva reference speakers from my cold dead hands! They are amazingly good and the price was incredible for the excellent performance. They are facing crosswise in our living area (13 x 14) at the end of a fairly small great room (13 x 45) in our small condo. I have three ERM-1's across the front with the center ERM-1 on its side on an Emotiva SS-6 slanting stand, directly facing my ears on the sofa just as are the L&R ERM-1's. L&R's are on Bell'o stands. In the rear are two Emotiva ERD-1's, one of the finest surround speakers ever made. Why so great? These are the smallest of the Reference line. They are extremely well made with rock solid cabinets. Most importantly they are the exact same (dual 5.5" drivers and 1" tweeter --- 80Hz at -2dB) as the top end of the Reference line tower, ERT-8.3. Find another brand that makes their small bookshelf speaker at the same quality and performance level as their top of the line floor standing speaker. They are 4 ohm and take a ton of power. Too many folks never realized the amazing dynamic range of these speaker by driving them with a receiver. Mine are driven by the original Emotiva XPA-5, a 75lb beast that puts out 300 watts into 4 ohm. I have had these Emotiva speakers so loud my friend down in Tacoma could hear them and they have never skipped a beat, talk about power handling! Also have an Emotiva XRM-1 and ERC-2 in the system. My sub in the rear corner below the right surround (10" from side wall and 15" from rear wall) is a large Outlaw LFM-1 Plus, 18Hz -2dB, 350WRMS. 1300W peak, SPL 115dB. The blending with the main five speakers is superb. I have been a preacher for years of identical voicing all around including surrounds, it truly makes an audible improvement. My surrounds are high and close to the side walls on purpose. The ERD-1's spread the sound so perfectly. Over head sounds are very realistic and no need for Atmos or side speakers. My 5.1 system is ideal in my room. Sorry if this is long and boring but I love raving about my 10 plus years old Emo system. I have many purchases that I have been so pleased with that I have kept them stilling working fine for many years: 1. 51 yrs, Toshiba ES-32C portable fan bought while in Vietnam (made in Japan). 2. 21 yrs, Noriko, wifey-poo and best buddy (made in Japan). 3. 19 yrs, Honda Accord EX, 4dr, 4cyl (made in Japan, vin# starts with a J). 4. 11 yrs, Emotiva system above, (made in China). 5. 10yrs, Panasonic TH-C50FD18 superb Plasma TV, (assembled in Mexico). 6. 3yrs, Alpha Romeo Giulia, AWD, Deutsch ZF 8-speed tran (magnificent), Ferrari cloned 2 liter 280hp/305ft-lbs, (made it Italy). BTW: I fear that the Alpha might outlive me and even some of the others. If you want to see what the L&R ERM-1's look like, crank your head 90 degrees to the left or the right. BTW #2, this is the Nut's photo taken in my backyard. High Fidelity Review stole it from my post on the Internet to use it in their review. Shame. Noriko's matching red walker after her recent total hip job.

@chuckienut, I just want to point out that you opened the door to this . . . . It's not my latest purchase, but it was my first "big" purchase and was used while I delivered newspapers and what I was listening to all night long when the first reports of Jim Morrison's death were coming in on WCFL. This is the radio I spent "a lot" of money on in 1969 back when the Fair-Trade Law was in effect. I still use it from time to time. Magnvox AM Portable Transistor Radio (Made in Japan)

Great Scott, ttocs! (subtly hidden pun there) That is a classic Magnavox transistor radio and solid state too and portable too and also made in Japan --- ah so! I think it was very subtle that you started off by talking about opening the door and then proceeded to mention Jim Morrison and subtly putting in a pitch for WCFL. There is so much hidden information in your writings.
You even got me thinking about years ago when I would deliver my brother's paper route for him for free. Wasn't all bad. We would wait at the local grocery store until the papers were dropped off for us to deliver. There was a newspaper rack near the side door where we waited. The other paperboy would sneak a look at Playboy Magazine while I would subtly peak over his shoulder. Then the store manager would come by and tell him to put it away.
ttoc, being an audiophile, I'm curious about one thing with your Maganvox sound machine.
How does it sound?
BTW: The word of the day is subtle and it's associated and various forms. Next week we will concentrate on the words: subtile, subtilisin, subtilize, subtilty, subtitle, subtlety, subtonic, subtopia, subtopic and subtorrid.

Next week we will concentrate on the words: subtile, subtilisin, subtilize, subtilty, subtitle, subtlety, subtonic, subtopia, subtopic and subtorrid. It sounds better today than it did back then because the speaker is now fully broken-in, and the electronics are also fully burned-in. Plus, it's mostly speaker anyway. I think it cost around $45, which in 1969 for a snot-nosed kid - was nothing to sneeze at! I drooled at it (I had a lot of dripping issues) through the appliance store window for weeks, just waiting till I could afford it. Please note that is has a EXT.S output. I'm pretty sure it's for External Subs. So, in keeping with your words of the day above, that would make it a 1.10.0 system. It's gonna sound AWSOME !! Those are vent slots on the back for when it's been crankin' for hours and heats up. I thought about adding a fan, but there's no USB port from which to power it.

Never forget and see the light! Many people spend and spend on the camera and forget the light. Well, tired of no control of my lighting, Lights on the way, and 128GB micro SD for my newer Samsung Tablet. Running out of room on my 64GB micro SD card.

TCL is nailing it. A brand we used in our conference rooms and everyone loves them. Value, and a still fine picture. Our High Five or Airmedia presentations were the business on these. Way cool TVs.

Stay tuned. The whole world of displays is changing drastically. By 2027, you will not believe your eyes. This is just the warm up to the big game in TVs.

Had to spend the Emo bucks I accumulated from the 2 S-15 subs I bought. Got 2 PA-1, 3 ZHDMI cables, 2 XLR to RCA cables, and a S-8 sub. Than they gave me more Emo bucks, my wife is not going to believe me that I keep getting these stuff for nothing lol
