A few months ago I scoured the CSL (not CSNY (kids won't get this one)) Clicked like... for the CSNY reference

So maybe this is off topic, but I have figured out a way to take a calibrated microphone, like my UMIK-1, and use it to tweak the calibration file for my EMM-1... is there any interest in a tutorial on how to do this?

Yes, that would be interesting! I've seen tutorials about this but was never able to try it.

It says they are available right now, July 14th update says this on their page. When you go to order one, it says Out of Stock Crappy, I used to own a UMIK but sold it about 3 years back as I didn't think I would ever use it haha.

Yep, Sold Out is confirmed. Decided to try again to buy one but same result as I've had the last 4 months - Can't. I've tried a number of times to buy one but haven't been able to due to Covid restrictions or not in stock, or this time with being able to get to payment and THEN being told it's not in stock. Maybe I'll just get it in the rain forest, they will deliver on Monday.

Yeah I was looking to get one myself to play with my RMC-1 to see the differences. I was happy to see Amazon has it in stock. Prime has me spoiled on shipping times for sure. I guess Monday will be the day for me as well. Just added this SPL meter as well to the list of audio testing goodies: amzn.to/30nQps8

Just added this SPL meter as well to the list of audio testing goodies: amzn.to/30nQps8My SPL meter bounces a lot, so I'm forced to watch for a short period of time to guess where the middle is. Using the EMM-1 with REW gives a tighter bounce range, but it's not handy to use on the spur of the moment. So I, and others, would be interested in what yours is like to use. BTW That company picked a very good name and font to use to make it look like it says FLUKE. Reminds me of when I was a kid and couldn't afford a Wilson football, so when I saw one at the sporting goods store with a really good "sale price" I bought it. Got it home, took it out of the box, and then noticed it said Winston. Same script. I kept it, still couldn't afford a Wilson.

Sort of stoopid that you can even add it to the cart then They must not have a good tech guy running their website. I don't want to get to be too negative about the situation because they are a good company putting out a good value added product. I just wish for me that they could've made it easier to track when I could order instead of it being such a crap shoot. I frankly gave up in late May or early June, don't recall, and didn't think much about it until Nick kept posting that the OEM version was available. So when others said it looks like the CSL version was available I checked it out. Bummed that it wasn't, but the OEM version arrives Monday. It'll be good enough.

I got my UMIK-1 from Cross Spectrum Labs back when I first got the XMC-1. Out of curiosity back then, I remember comparing the calibration file from CSL with the one from MiniDSP with the same serial#, and there is little difference so I'm guessing the variances and accuracy of the measurements between the two files are minimal at best. I'd bet the UMIK-1's from the Amazon link that Hair Nick shared are about as good as the CSL UMIK-1's, and if there are, probably not enough to notice. In other words, if you really want to try the UMIK-1, then jump on the UMIK-1’s offered from Amazon or buy directly from “miniDSP”. www.minidsp.com/products/acoustic-measurement/umik-1

With Nick’s help we now have links to 3 sources for the UMIK-1 in the Dirac thread; directly from mini-DSP (about $98 w/shipping), from Amazon ($106 w/Prime 2 day shipping), and Cross Spectrum Labs w/additional calibration ($120 w/Shipping). There’s also a link to the nice boom stand, maybe I’ll add a cheap one too.
For taking good measurements I’d probably recommend a boom stand first, that will improve the placement accuracy with any mic. If you then want to take it further, try one of the UMIK-1 sources, with the CSL option being the most accurate choice. That said, I’ve done measurements with the EMM-1, the little tripod, and pillows, that came out pretty well — you can get big benefits from Dirac with just the supplied accessories, people shouldn’t feel they have to pay extra.
Oh, and the mini-DSP link doubles as the place you can download the individual mic calibration file.

That's the exact Mic stand I have, picked it up at the local music shop, cheap and it does the job as good as any, I've thought about another UMIK but I'm gonna stick with the supplied Mic

Kind of a silly question, but when using the mic stand, is it ok to put it between the measuring location and the speaker? Would the stand affect the measurement in any way?
Thanks much.

You have to to place the mic in the right position and I'm assuming its too small to make a difference anyhow. Chad

No worries, there isn't a way to get around it unless you hung the Mic from the ceiling with fishing line but in all seriousness the stand is vital from proper mic placement and height when measuring the different positions and it makes it much easier than using pillows or boxes which in the end will mess with the readings more than the stand would Chad
