Yes, that would be interesting! I've seen tutorials about this but was never able to try it. OK, I will see how hard it would be for me to partially automate the process. I did this for the XMC-1 microphone. Basically I did the following: 1. Measure with REW and the EMM-1 without calibration file. 2. Measure with the calibrated mic, including the calibration file, at the very same spot (important! Use a mic stand and also ensure that you don´t move it and set the mics in the exact same place) 3. Export both measurements from REW as text files 4. Edit the text files to add a ";" as separator between the frequency, SPL and phase data. This can be easily done with Search & Replace all in Notepad. 5. You can now open the (now CSV-) files with Excel. 6. Copy both files content into one file. Then subtract the first measurement (noncal EMM-1) from the second measurement (calibrated reference mic). The resulting data set is your new calibration curve for the EMM-1. For me this made a big difference and also really improved DIRAC results.

If you do have a reference (calibrated microphone), yes. I already posted that a few times in the last years here in the lounge actually. DIRAC as well as REW allow you to use a calibration file. Or if you don´t have a reference mic, there are companies who can also calibrate an EMM-1. Takes 25€ for 0° or 90° and 40€ for both here in Germany. Since I already had a calibrated Monacor ECM-40, I created my own file for my EMM-1, since DIRAC wouldn´t recognize my ECM-40 + Focusrite 2i2.

since DIRAC wouldn´t recognize my ECM-40 + Focusrite 2i2. Really, do you think it was the Focusrite making it look like a generic input instead of specifically a microphone? I assumed a calibrated mic into a Focusrite would work.

Using my Scarlett 2i4 and the Emotiva EMM-1 with a standard XLR cable, Dirac recognizes the Scarlett but the mic won't work in the Volume Calibration. But if I connect a normal mic it does work. Still using the Scarlett and EMM-1, but instead of selecting the Scarlett and instead selected the Pro Tools Aggregate I/O (I've got Pro Tools installed and this is the driver for the Scarlett interface) in Dirac, the mic works! I don't get it. I don't need it, but I don't get it.

Good advice, thank you! I just did the long route and calibrated the EMM-1. Will try out the Pro Tools driver the next time.

Yeah I was looking to get one myself to play with my RMC-1 to see the differences. I was happy to see Amazon has it in stock. Prime has me spoiled on shipping times for sure. I guess Monday will be the day for me as well. Just added this SPL meter as well to the list of audio testing goodies: amzn.to/30nQps8Did your mic arrive yesterday? Mine was to be delivered by 9pm yesterday. At 9:01pm I was notified that it was delayed, hadn't been shipped yet. I chatted for the following 51 minutes trying to cancel the order which was now delayed one week. They can't cancel the order because "it was shipped, and labels created". What? It hadn't moved, was in the fulfillment center where it comes from - in Ohio - but they can't stop the delivery that will happen 7 days later? Cross-Spectrum had stock so I ordered from them. When the Amazon delivery is made I can "refuse" the delivery or go through the hassle of returning after the fact. Let's see which one gets here first.

Excited to have new toys to play with this week. Curious if anyone has tried this Dayton Audio Microphone too? amzn.to/3hlxqFjIt showed up in my related products as a cheaper option and now I'm a little curious how it stacks up.

Now Amazon says it'll arrive either today or tomorrow. So color me curious. I'm gonna accept both because just like the bank robber in the opening sequence of Dirty Harry, "I gots to know". I'm curious about how similar or different the mics are. The only way to know is to compare the numbers, and compare sweeps. Then I can sell one of them, yes at a loss monetarily but the education is worth it.

Just ordered a UMIK-1 from Cross Spectrum. They actually had stock!
Hopefully will get it by the end of the week. Looking forward to using it.

The CSL should be the ticket, how much was shipping? just want to update my comparison post. You can actually download the cal file for the Amazon UMIK without opening it, just need the serial number.

AAAARGH! When I sent my XMC-1 back to Emotiva I sent my UMIK-1 microphone holder Probably not worth the cross-shipping costs to get it back. bummer FWIW I use the spider from another mic, and no, it doesn't fit, so . . . . . I use a make-it-fit-thingy. It helps as another layer of separation from the floor vibrations when the bass stuff happens.

Ahhhh, someone’s been to audio engineering school! 🎧 (Eddie Offord’s Mic’ing 207 class? 🎙) I have one of those isolation thingy’s, but hadn’t known about the optional ‘adapter’ ... did you get that on Amazon? As I questioned whether it was micing, miking, or mic’ing, I googled and found this thread, as we know, audio guys do have a sense of humor. 🎤 recording.org/threads/micing-or-miking.6704/

LOL "mic'ing" makes sense to me. As in the "lyrics" for the Art Of Noise song Paranoimia featuring Max Headroom: "And on mic, the l-l-l-l-l-l-l-lovely Cher, what's that Mike?" I got that adapter from Home Depot in a 24 pack. The darker green ones have the best dampening properties, something about the dye that's used. After they are cryogenically treated, and then they get dirty, I heat treat them in the wash. It's sort of a poor man's tempering process. I started paying more attention to vibrations transmitted via the floor when I began experimenting with REW and subs a couple months ago and was noticing some strange erratic results, which I traced to one of the fittings on the mic boom being a little loose. So now I go overboard anywhere I can.

Curious if anyone has tried this Dayton Audio Microphone too? amzn.to/3fVazAmIt showed up in my related products as a cheaper option and now I'm a little curious how it stacks up. It popped up on my related feed too, it looks pretty good and is individually calibrated, but it requires 48V phantom power so you’d need a USB adapter like the Focusrite 2i2. Unless? What voltage does the EMM-1 work on? Could the USB digitizing cable that comes with it be transforming USB’s 5V into 48V phantom power? (which is one of the things the Focusrite does) If so then the Emo cable might work with this mic, and the other one we discussed.

Looks like I'm going to keep the UMIK-1 that just showed up today from Ammazonn. There was a card inside from Deer Creek Audio (the vendor) and the unusual name is of someone I went to high school with. I sent an email, but you know how it is with emails that come from nowhere - it'll probably get trashed. So I'll give it a day or so and call. It's gotta be the guy I knew.
Plus, the calibration goes down to 10Hz. Not sure why miniDSP doesn't advertise that they calibrate that low.
