I share that same line of thought... we can only hope so! And don’t fall into the trap of purchasing or renting anything but physical media. If we let our voices be heard they might hear us! (Some companies & people are deaf and opt to not hear or listen) 🙏🤞🙏 Sadly, the movie rental stores are almost non-existent. The only one in my town closed about 2 months ago. I see a few options online for mail order rentals. Does anyone have a preference or experience with these?

Yeah...the only places left where I live are Redbox and I don't think I've seen 4K movies yet.

(Some companies & people are deaf and opt to not hear or listen) 🙏🤞🙏 Try owning only physical media with kids in the house, lol. We buy a lot of itunes movies as we find owning the disc for children's content is fairly pointless since they will damage the disc over time. For a while we would buy the disc and use the digital codes, but that was always $5-$10 a disc more and all the kids watched was the digital copies anyway, I still buy physical disc of 4k movies that I really want and that I think will look good on my projector. But there is for sure a place in the world for streaming catalogs and for kids movies those benefits far out weigh the increases in PQ and SQ on the disc. You could take the disc and copy it to your computer. From there, either re-record it on a black DVD/Blu-ray to let them tear the copy up and keep the original pristine, or take the file and stream it to multiple devices (like I do with Plex).

I've used DVD.com (the old Netflix rental service) on and off for the better part of 12 years.

Though 4k streaming is visually better than HD streaming, it is still a step down from 4k discs. If I had to guess, the reason they stopped is because of the current situation we find ourselves in. Once this resolves and people start visiting stores, they will resume selling them. Some of these discs have a total bitrate of over 80Mbps. Streaming services won't come close to this for a long time. I'll take my 8+Mbps audio bitrate over 748kbps all day long. Amen!

But, they only have UHD in certain locations. Definitely no where near me unfortunately.

Sure, or I could pay less and buy Trolls World Tour on itunes and it is all done with a single click.

They’re always offering small discounts on rentals and streaming. They also sell the discs after a month or so. If I’m on the fence about movie I’ll rent it and if I really like it I’ll buy it for $6-$8. I never rented the last few good movies because I was just so busy. By the time I got around to having time to watch them it was a couple of dollars more to just buy them. Midway in Blu-ray but with Atmos was $6. Pretty good night out.

This discussion is unclear to me.
Nowhere in this discussion, or the links provided, did I understand that anything other than 4K UHD discs are being discontinued.
So am I to understand that SD DVDs, and HD Blu-rays (1080p) are going to continue to be produced on physical media?

I am referring to UHD discs when I talk about not being able to rent. We have RedBox kiosks all over the place. Renting Bluray is not problem. UHD is the problem.

If it’s a disc I will watch a couple of times I’ll seek out a UHD copy. Blu-Ray is really good, especially with today’s ups alerts that I won’t pay the premium unless the reviews say theUHD is remarkable! Otherwise, is it really worth the added expense?

At the end of the day, I just want the best audio track. MadVR already makes 2k look great. I would rather have the 4k if it is shot in 4k, but a lot of times, you get a better audio track with UHD.

I am sorry to hear about the lack of UHDs in redbox in your area. My last duty station in SoCal had the UHDs for rent at RedBox. Now I live in Ky and haven’t tried the kiosks yet nor I had a desire lately due to current events so I resort to buying new at BestBuy. My complaint on rentals is the lack of extras.

If I recall, many if not all of the most recent rentals have the extras on them. The rentals that Redbox sold me had them. What were they charging for UHD rentals? Thanks for your service! May God Bless and keep you and your family. ❤️

I just read the OP. Digital media is frankly not caught up to the quality of UHDs. Unfortunately, we are in a niche of the pursuit of the best video or sound or both unfortunately that is not consensus of the majority of the population. For the same reason my wife is fine listening to music from the iPhone speakers happy and content with the convenience when I know there is so much potential. I prefer the cleanest audio and picture nonetheless.

This was over a year ago and I am glad that they are now including extras.

For stereo we both prefer tubes, McIntoch C220 with Bob Latino M125 monoblocks. Shes been involved with all the gear in our systems. I’m blessed! HT, she insisted that we upgrade the pair of 15” subs to a pair of duel driver pair of PSA 3000i’s. Yeh! She wants the room to shake when its supposed to! LOL

Upscaling video works pretty well... music? Not so much.... so yeah, gimme best audio and I will settle for lesser video if I have to

Now the real question is: Why did we invested so much in hi quality sound system for streaming sh** bandwidth compression?
