Though not so technically challenging as the others mentioned in this thread, I submit Ringo's solo on "The End" from the Abbey Road album. m.youtube.com/watch?v=12R4FzIhdoQA true guilty pleasure. Ringo, in many respects, was a great drummer. He did not have speed, he did not do overly technical moves BUT he was perfect for the Beatles music.
Try to imagine Moon or Bonzo being the Beatles drummer.
I've mentioned this story before, but it's fun to repeat it. I had an argument with my older brother about who was the best drummer in the world. This was right before the breakup. I argued it was Ringo. He went nuts saying it wasn't. My "reasoning" was that Ringo was in the best band in the world, ergo, he's the best drummer. I was a kid, but I knew what I was doing, and still look back at that incident with laughter inside! I agree that Ringo was perfect for the Beatles.

I’ve only heard Buddy Miles do Machine Gun with Hendrix (Band of Gypsys.) Mitch also? Just realized BOTH Mitchell and Miles passed in the same year 2008. Bill

Since Vinnie Colaiuta has already been mentioned, how about other Jeff Beck drummers
Terry Bossio
and often overlooked Cozy Powell. LOVE the DEAD's Billy Kreutzman and Mickey Hart. But my favorite solo drummer would be Billy Cobham.

Hope it's ok to hop on the Bozzio theme for a moment. Arguably, just about the most difficult drum score around, The Black Page by Zappa is to drums what Fracture by King Crimson's Robert Fripp is for guitar.
And a bonus video explaining why it's so difficult.
So many great drummers here!!

I got to see buddy Rich perform live with his Orchestra several times back in the day. One particular show was not far from where Gene Krupa lived in his hometown of Yonkers New York. In fact the street that he lived on was later named Gene Krupa Drive. Anyway Gene showed up at the show and sat in with the band. he hit one note on the bass drum and was astounded even himself at the sound Buddy was getting out of that bass drum. An unforgettable evening for sure!

But my favorite solo drummer would be Billy Cobham. I always hoped but it didn’t happen for a remaster of Emerson Lake and Powell. Cozy Powell turned Emerson Lake and Palmer into something rocksolid. Call Palmer is a good drummer and of course is immortalized in the band but he would scare me a little bit when he was solo I’d always hope he would come back without a problem. Not so with Cozy Powell

Being a drummer myself this is something that I have a completely biased opinion on and which has changed over the years as I matured. I used to love all the flashy show off stuff from the circus type drummers (I even had lessons with Virgil Donati when I was young and he still lived in Oz) but now, for me, the groove/textures/sound is all that matters....................so I give you................

I’m a fan of both Simon Phillips and Gavin Harrison. I met Simon a few years ago at the NAMM Show. Super nice, signed a pic for me. Simon introducing Gavin… www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3h7Xbzd2bE
