I purchased a factory renewed Emotiva UMC-1 in November 2012. Now 8 years later, almost to the day, my UMC-1 finally gave up the ghost, leaving a burnt odor lingering in the air. So, now I'm looking for a replacement preamp-processor. I haven't participated in these forums for years, but since I'm now considering the MC-700 as a replacement, I thought I would check to see what you all thought of the MC-700.
I was around when the UMC-200 was released. I remember the painful experiences that new owners of the UMC-200 related, and that gives me considerable pause. Are things any better with the MC-700?
I see user reviews on other web sites, and even YouTube, where users relate how the MC-700 seems practically unusable. Are things any better now?
And, how is support?
I would really would like to know what you think. Feel free to message me directly as well.
Thank you,
np

The main drawback of the MC-700 other than an outdated standard is that the audio quality was not very good. So I put hell no.

Try it for 30 days. Send it back if you don’t like it. Easy

Try it for 30 days. Send it back if you don’t like it. Easy If only it were actually that easy. The trouble is, I anticipate that it will take me longer than just 30 days to explore all of the features and settings. Additionally, some of the problems that people have encountered have to do with the reliability of the unit well after the initial 30 days.

It's a decent little processor but not even remotely close to worth $700. Because it can only do HDMI 2.0a, you will get far better performance from an older processor or receiver out there with that feature set, let alone less HDMI problems, for much less $$. Why people even consider this processor at that price is beyond me.

Additionally, some of the problems that people have encountered have to do with the reliability of the unit well after the initial 30 days. It look like that you made a decision then Yes, I loved my UMC-1, but Emotiva's current build quality and value proposition just doesn't seem to measure up. I think the one thing that I'll miss the most about the UMC-1 is the hefty milled aluminum remote control which my wife affectionately calls, "the murder weapon". Funny enough, I have no doubt that it could live up to that name if the need ever arose to defend myself from some wayward intruder. I didn't simply use that remote control like its delicate and fragile cousins; I wielded it like a sceptre as I held court in my home theater! *sigh* Those were the days... But it's time now to turn the page, and start a new chapter. So, I took advantage of a fantastic Black Friday deal to purchase a factory reconditioned Marantz SR5014 AV Receiver that should serve me well as a preamp-processor. Now I need to figure out what to do with my non-working UMC-1 and my 40% off discount card. Any suggestions? Thanks, np

Wow! Too weird!
I too got a UMC-1 back in 2012 along with an XPA, ERTs and ERMs. Though my UMC hasn't died on me, I had decided it's time for an upgrade. I came here for the first time in a long time and see that the 40% card is only good until January 1st! Yikes! Time to make a decision fast...to XMC-2 or not.

By buying that UMC-1 you may also be in the Upgrade-For-Life program which has not gone away. Using that program, 25% discount, I just purchased an XMC-2 myself, arriving shortly! So, use whichever discount you can. The 40% off choice is of course killer if you can.

I recently updated my bedroom 5.1 setup. Had a UMC-200 which was still working fine (but a pain to update), and a going-bad UPA-500 amp (lots of channel static). Bought the MC-700 pre-pro and then got the A-500 amp, and sold the UMC-200 to a friend.
So far the only issue I've had is intermittent failure to pass audio when in bypass mode. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Latest firmware 3.1.3. The Emo-Q room EQ ran fine, no problems. The sound is very nice. Music is great, and streaming movies and YouTube vids all sound very good, A good 5.1 source sounds very good in my small room. I currently have no 4K sources or display in this setup, so I'm using HDMI ports 4,5,6 for my 3 sources.
My only real complaint is the on-screen setup display only works when the video out is a NON-4K port, and the menu system sucks. I have an XMC-2 in the L.R. and its menu system is far better. The -700 menus are archaic and awkward to use.

The main drawback of the MC-700 other than an outdated standard is that the audio quality was not very good. So I put hell no. To set this into perspective, at least the UMC-200, which I owned and uses the same DAC, sounds very nice for its price. I compared it to the Onkyo PR-SC 886, 5507 and 5508 and the UMC-200 did sound better. If the MC-700 doesn´t sound worse than the UMC-200 I actually think the sound quality is pretty good for the price.

The MC-700 does sound very good. When Gar/Boom reviewed it, it was on BasX speakers they had never heard before, which they didn't optimize for the room and they struggled with actually configuring the XMC as the menu system proved quite challenging for them. That stuff always gets left out when he mentions how bad the MC-700 sounds.

I just pulled an MC-700 out of the closet that I had set aside about 18 months ago when I got an XMC-1. I hooked the MC-700 up to an A-500 amp and I think it sounds pretty good. The menu learning curve is somewhat painful, but I am used to it now, so I can manage. Granted, the sound quality does not measure up to the XMC-1, but then again, as new equipment, it is 1/3 the cost. I am not in the camp where there are "many lower cost options" for the features. I believe the MC-700 fits in a price / performance niche where there are not many good options for separates or AVR's with pre-outs.

I find the MC-700 sounds great for both music and movies in my bedroom setup. I have it paired with the A-500 amp. It's a great economical solution when you don't need XMC-2 level performance.
