This this will cause some 'discussion". I have to agree with the youtube poster about some of the claims of today's turntables. I've owned a few over hyped, over rated spinners. Bottom line- it's all the cartridge, stupid.

Right. But the arm needs to hold the cartridge where it should be and not let it move and the table needs to turn at the right speed and not get messed up by the energy fed back into it and the . . .
I think the cartridge is king, but the king needs a good castle and attendant lords.

Reminds me to start saving for that SoundSmith that I’ve been eyeballing. 😋

This is why I love my submarine turntable. Picks up the groove information from below the surface

I picked up a Thorens #? for next to nothing that something fell on and smashed the tonearm. So I bought a Rabco vertical track arm ($130 at the time)- perfect tracking angle. Problem is they have a motor that drives the arm across the record and produces rumble. A great idea that didn't exactly work out so well.

Grew up with turntables all around me and tape too. So I know turntable foolery all too well. Was a dealer for VPI and many other makes before I left them and got the best job in I.T. for me ever. So my deal at some point is not turntable foolery, but Master Tape Insanity.

The real turntable foolery rests with the work/pleasure ratio attached to it. That’s why (eons ago) the quest for the best changer was on. Never saw this one before

The reason that direct drive TTs from the past were superior to belt drive is that they had better wow & flutter, less rumble and if they were a well built unit would last for decades. But I agree that a good tone arm and cartridge are as, if not more, important.

I am starting up a Sunday Afternoon Classic Album club at my church and even though I will be using files (the horror, but it is a Presbyterian church, so I get some latitude) we will take a break for discussion between sides. Not exactly OG, but in the spirit.

Belt vs Direct drive? I have no preference any more. Thorens made both. Technics SL1200 is direct, so you decide. The best idea I ever saw was the Thorens platter being part of the motor, don't know if it was better but it's a brilliant idea. What I look for today as a casual listener is: 'S' shaped arm, low wow & flutter and rumble, wooden base, removeable head shell. Bought the Fluance RT82, but should have gotten the RT85 for the acrylic plater (still an option).

A year now since it was negated to the trash pile (except for the cartridge repurposed by a friend.)

Found out the hard way that the little loop that VPI does with the tonearm cable makes a great antenna if you have any radio towers near.

Classic Album Sunday is a, well, I do not know what to call it. Folks get together to listen to a classic album on Sundays. There is some organization on a higher level, (https://classicalbumsundays.com/) and some folks just set aside the time and do it. The model we came up with is using the choir room (nice acoustics and a pair of big high efficiency horns) and invite a bunch of folks over. There are light refreshments and a print out of the lyrics and credits for the lp being attended to. We introduce the album, play a track from the record before as a warm up, and listen to side one without interruption.
Then we discuss a bit before jumping into side 2. Then more snacks and discussion. This is held in an evangelical setting so lots of discussion of world view and spirituality. It is held in Nashville so lots of discussion of guitar tone and recording tricks. Takes a little less than 90 minutes, and a great opportunity for music lovers, musicians, and audiophiles to hang out and talk tunes and Jesus and such. First was Rubber Soul, then What's Going On, Jolene, Kind Of Blue, we try to keep things rotating and inclusive. Plenty of classic music to enjoy. 5th Sunday of the month we are thinking of letting folks bring in their own music for supportive only feedback.
Rather than move my Rega every week, we are using high res files. MUCH easier and pretty much just as good.

…..And also back then (although today I fully embrace modern technology) …..I had all tubes, amplifier, preamplifier and tuner ALL on separate chassis! Paranoid about making sure all those tubes were fully up to snuff. Back in 69 S.S. was rather tentative

Classical music! ….the choir room….my bride is in the choir for years. My Wed. responsibility involves having dinner ready so she can get out of here and go sing her little heart ❤️ out. I did once play drums for a jazz Mass and even was told to SOLO during Communion! That was indeed, an inspiring challenge to pull that off without going over the top and offending anyone, since normally that is a quieter and contemplative moment. I seized it and loved it now wishing I had an audio copy. Another one of those moments held only in the heart.
