I use an Emotiva XSP-1 Gen 2 preamp for two-channel and a combination of midlevel AVR/5-channel poweramp for surround processing via the XSP-1 Gen 2's outstanding implementation of an HT Bypass. I did it that way to economically keep abreast of HT surround and video formats (4k/8k). However this is still awfully expensive, if a bit more flexible. I personally listen to a TON of 2-channel music using Denafrips DDC/DAC separates fed from JRiver MC via a USB cable with separate, shielded power and signal legs. DIRAC provides the room correction and bass management. If you're not into the discrete ladder DAC sound, save your money (and frustration) and get an RMC-1.
If you have an XMC-2, you'll have to spend at least a few grand to get a separate brand-name preamp to significantly better the XMC-2's two-channel performance now that the XSP-1 Gen 2 is no longer in production. If you absolutely must upgrade, consider getting the latest RMC-1.
