We have tried to duplicate the issue you’re experiencing with your MR1 and will and will continue to do so. We do not have any issues with normal AppleTV streaming content and DolbyVision.
Will continue to dig into this and get to the bottom of things… But, to be clear, we cannot duplicate this issue at the moment.
I know Damon has reached out to you directly and we will continue to troubleshoot with you to find the core issue. Both the MC1 and the MR1 have been extremely stable and tend to “just work”.
However, there are so many different use cases and system configurations that it’s just a matter of time before we find a set up that causes an issue.
Please know that we will continue to work with you to get this resolved.

With Infuse? I’m assuming that the Apple TV works fine without it? Also, I had never heard of Infuse prior to this thread, would appreciate a lesson on what its purpose is and what it’s used for. Assumption is computer based video storage…anything else? The app does get good reviews. The two instances last night were not in Infuse, but the AppleTV app watching AppleTV+ content in DV. Paused, came back, hit play and everything went black. Had to completely reboot the chain to get it working again. In those cases, the TV was in DV, switched out to SDR for the screensaver, and when I went to hit play it tried going back to DV content and instead went blank. It has to be the MR-1 causing the issues as this have never been a problem before. As for Infuse, I am using it as a player for my Plex server. It is far better than the native Plex app. Ok, so apparently it’s a problem with Dolby Vision and the Apple TV. I wonder if pausing is causing this issue? Regardless, Emotiva should be able to test this without Infuse in play. This needs fixing.

I am going to try a different input on the MR-1 and see what happens. Maybe it is just my unit with a problem.
UPDATE: Been torturing my devices (for about 30 minutes) by switching between SDR, HDR10, and DV (profile 5 & 8) content in Infuse and the AppleTV app and so far had zero issues on HDMI 2. Will continue to use and report back.

Emotiva should be able to test this without Infuse in play. I think Infuse/Plex is involved in the issue.

Emotiva should be able to test this without Infuse in play. I think Infuse/Plex is involved in the issue. The problem was being exhibited outside Infuse last night. However, the move to HDMI 2 input has been more solid. We will see…. I might just have a bum unit.

...I have so many thoughts right now, but I am curious as to what you might consider to be a better DAC? The chip alone does not tell the story. And no DSD in the MR-1. That's a reasonable question and it should include the type of DAC as well as the brand and part number. The '528 is a reasonable part, but it is considered more mid-stream. Many products have used it with success for years. However, as such it is not up to the performance of another long time standby, the TI PCM1792A. Does more, sounds better. THe cost issue, however, is that is a two-channel part and to use them in something like the MR1 you would need seven of them. That ain't cheap. THat would, however, allow DSD on at least L/R channels for stereo if used for that purpose and then a '528 for the rest. Above that, now that AKM is back on line to some extent, their DAC parts are regarded by many as the best, but the good ones are costly and in fairness would be work from a BOM cost standpoint in the MR1. Probably more suitable for something int he XMC/RMC price range. There is also ESS, but opinions vary widely on them. Some like them, some don't. Yes, to continue to be fair, there are other parts of this relating to the circuitry around the actual DAC part and the full design and implementation of the DAC section. However, you can't squeeze blood from a stone. The spec of the chip sets the upper limit and the designer's goal is to make certain that is delivered. Again, given what I suspect were cost parameters, using the '528 part isn't a bad choice, but for an AVR in the $2k price band it falls short of what one might expect. THe truth, as always, is in the listening and that is in the ear of the beholder.

Looking forward to Keith’s response to the choice of DAC.

Looking forward to Keith’s response to the choice of DAC. Yes, so am I. Also for responses to the other questions raised earlier about HDMI 2.1/HDCP 2.3 and other items. Leave us not forget that HDMI 2.1 is MUCH more than the ability to do better 8K. Things such as VRR, ALLM, QMS and more are going to be key, particularly for gamers, just as DSD and DLNA are something that will be of interest to two-channel listeners.

I’m not sure what people expect to hear about the choice of features and components. Emotiva decided to build a receiver at a $2000 price point, they made decisions about channels, power, DACs, inputs, HDMI, RC, etc. They could have used ‘better’ DACs, a more advance HDMI (2.1), more power, Dirac, whatever, but then it would have cost more? Some might feel certain features would be worth a higher cost (2.1?), and others might think something else is worth more (DAC?), but at some point making everyone happy prices yourself out of the market. It seems the best/latest features will reserved for the G4P, then maybe at some point those features might trickle down to an MR2. At this point people interested in a receiver need to compare the features, quality, and sound of the MR1 with other AVRs and buy it or not, I’m not sure I see how knowing all of the design criteria helps make a better decision.

What are "...extra output devices"? I have B&W 702s2 speakers and in my current setup the LCR channels are at 165 watts. I don't want to lose this power if I get the MR1. output devices (plural) are what modulates the power supply in the end....and are connected TO the speaker. they are the FINAL STAGE in the amplifier which may have 3 or more such stages....'building up' to the final level... More devices should provide more power at the expense of needing more heat sink. Such devices have limits. So must be provided proper voltage. Such devices must be run in what the engineer would call 'safe operating range'. this means not to let 'em get too hot. Or run at too high a voltage (set by power supply) Small or or lower powered amps may have a pair of devices.....Generally run what is called 'push pull' where each device runs part of the waveform. Pass Labs uses Many devices Sometimes a dozen per channel or more. And they weigh a TON. Most amps, based on above, wiil have EVEN numbers of such devices......The way Keith puts it? The extra devices will provide more headroom (power above rating) while leaving the continuous power alone. I LIKE headroom..... Even a lower power amp with a lot of headroom sounds like a 'bigger' amp....

For the calibration, according to this video you have to point the microphone at the speaker for a second pass. Is that still the case with the MR1? Just want to know for when mine arrives... Thanks!

The video you refer to is for the MC1, so if indeed the MR1 is an MC1 with amplification and if it's using the same firmware, I would guess that EMO-Q for both MC1 and MR1 are the same. I personally don't have experience with either one so hopefully someone that has used this latest version of EMO-Q will chime in, KeithL maybe ?

I tortured it pretty good yesterday and it didn’t blink an eye. So, I am starting to think the HDMI 1 input may have a problem in my unit. This could be an RMA situation.

One more question for you guys: I have a 1st gen XPA-5 amplifier. I read previous posts where it seems like the front 3 channel amps are configured a little differently than the other channels. Do you think I'm going to be messing with the sound signature if I drive my front channels, center, and surrounds with my XPA-5 and let the receiver do that rest of my channels in a 7.2.2 configuration?

Why don't you try to connect it back to the HDMI 1 input and check if the issue reappears? I know, it is annoying, but it would be a way to be sure once and for all. It might still be possible that changing physical HDMI input in reality just reset the handshake. Sometime HDMI has a mind of its own...

I'd TEND to follow the directions. But as a measurement person from years of work, I'd ADD that you should keep careful record of the exact location of the mic for Each Measurment. That would be X, Y and Z The last? Height of the mic. As frequencies rise, wavelength gets shorter and smaller and smaller differences when doing repeat measurements being making a difference.... In very round numbers? 1khz is one foot. So maybe 1/2 that could make a meaningful difference at that frequency....
