… So what DO I consider “credible science fiction?” Two shows that come to mind immediately are “The Martian” and “The Expanse.” Though really a great movie, compared to Avitar: Way of the Water, The Martian is like a documentary — in fact I’d hope we’ll have someone up there relatively soon “sciencing the hell” out of the place. The Expanse just put me to sleep (though I could use more of that and here I am writing a rebuttal … maybe I should put it on). Honestly, it might have gotten better, I wasn’t going to wait to find out. So A:WOTW is better SciFi for me, hopefully I’ll see it a second time when my niece and nephew are here next week.

The Expanse just put me to sleep (though I could use more of that and here I am writing a rebuttal … maybe I should put it on). Man, AudioHTIT, I wish you would! The biggest problem, if you consider it one (I do), is the reliance on the books of "James S.A. Corey" as source material. The books, despite having some excellent concepts, are most obviously written as screen plays - a short stretch of character development - followed by a gunfight - followed by another short stretch of character development - followed by an action sequence - ad nauseam. Nevertheless, the (human) science of the Expanse series is more realistic than most Sci-Fi. When the spaceships accelerate, they have to spend an equal amount of force slowing down. Space mining is necessary to economically provide water and minerals for human life. Genetic engineering is necessary to grow crops under domes that will provide nutrition. Rocks can be weapons when accelerated and aimed. Human bodies modify themselves through natural selection to the conditions they encounter (the "belters"). Etc. Of course the (at least two) species of aliens in the series are of interest, and can be excused for not having to obey the laws of physics that apply to everyone else, but... If ANY competent science fiction author chose to write Expanse-based fiction, I'll bet it would sell like Harry Potter.

I love, science-fiction film and enjoy being “shallow“ about the whole deal. I just thought this film was great 3-D eye candy (if you are so equipped.) Dazzling special effects…..plot? It’s science fiction…… I don’t give a damn I just sit down for some fun. I remember when Za Za Gabor did queen from Outer space or Mars whatever the heck it was called! So far as the plot goes, that’s about as serious as I get about it lol. As long as I have fun, that’s all that matters.

So last night (now that we have 3-D copies of both films in tow). We watched the first film. Can’t believe it was 2009 already and thoroughly enjoyed it while our 3-D capability is still intact. Tonight will be the first home viewing of the way of water which we have seen only once in the theater itself. A strange sense of irony, with the death of new 3-D equipment at home, that we were able to get the glasses and watch the film in the theater still in 3-D. The only thing I missed were ZA ZA’s army of Martian women running around in mini skirts. Perhaps I will try to take the plot a bit more serious this time.

Heck, science tells us men can have babies and the CDC advises men on how to chest feed so Queen of Outer Space seems pretty realistic to me.

men can breastfeed to infants too. Men have mammary glands and you do not need to be on hormones or anything. Happens in places where a man was left to take care of a child and then…

Um... Scientific American magazine says garbulky’s right. Google it. Under rare and unusual circumstances but it is not natural. The article clarifies this. www.scientificamerican.com/article/strange-but-true-males-can-lactate/What is taking place today is men are taking drugs to stimulate lactation, which can endanger the baby because of the presence of those drugs. It isn't naturally occurring.

Well anyway back to the topic the way of water is a long film. I think it runs longer than the original avatar so we haven’t gotten to the second one yet hoping to do the back to back double feature we took a break with a short IMAX presentation last night superspeedway narrated by Paul Newman Less than an hour. I have to say about the audio 1997 and it has a DTS track but it was so incredible. I think maybe over the past decade or so they have forgotten how to use the tools to render top-notch audio because this frankly was unbelievable and I forgot how good it was .

Well anyway back to the topic the way of water is a long film. I think it runs longer than the original avatar so we haven’t gotten to the second one yet hoping to do the back to back double feature ... It is long, I knew it going into the theatre and was ... 'empty', I made it comfortably through the 3+ hours, my friend however was getting fidgety near the end and had to pop up and out as soon as the credits started rolling. If I do watch it next week with 'the kids', I'll plan an intermission so everyone can take whatever kind of break they need, from bio to fresh popcorn. With a back to back showing that could even be more important, but understand if you want to maintain the flow (hopefully not the wrong flow 🤭).

I hadn't been to a theater in over three years, for obvious reasons. Not that I go very often anyway, because we prefer to wait and watch at home. But I wanted to see an appropriate cinematic spectacle in a Dolby Cinema and there are only two near me ... each about 45min away. On the day this movie opened I went to the afternoon show with my wife and a friend, and I carefully picked our seats to be in what I hoped was a good spot for visual balance and Atmos sound. I think it worked really well, the seats were the fancy reclining types ... and there were maybe 10 other people in the theater!
We really enjoyed it and technology-wise it was really interesting with the different frame rates and 3D. The sound was good, of course, but theater sound always seems harsh to me. Sure the bass is epic, but everything else seems to have an edge.
A couple weeks ago I noticed it's on MAX with Atmos and Dolby Vision so I skipped around to parts and I was really amazed at how good the picture looks, and of course the Atmos sound was great too. Maybe I'll watch the whole thing someday, like if a friend wanted to see it.

Yes, of course this is the major perk of home theater that you can break it up at a perfect moment and pick it up when you’re ready. I think we’re gonna get started tonight.
