The same here... I find 3D videos cool to watch... but the glasses are uncomfortable and they give me a headache. I've only watched a few 3D movies (for that reason)... But I've also got to say that I don't think that it's always "well done"... For example, I did see Dr Strange in 3D, but while the 3D looked "somewhat cool", it also looked very "cartoony" and not very "compelling". If anything what I'd like to see in 3D is Disney's Strange World... not a great movie but visually quite pretty to look at. The Guillermo del Toro version of Pinocchio also looks like it would translate very well to 3D. Of course what we call "3D" is really "stereoscopic"... so it does have serious limitations over the user experience real 3D could deliver if it actually existed. On that previous note I have a serious suggestion about VIEWING "3D movies"... In real life we determine how far away something is using several different visual cues. 1. We use basic object precedence... when one object is in front of another and so blocks it from view. 2. We use parallax... the fact that our two eyes see slightly different images. 3. We use depth of field... the fact that, when we focus our eyes on one object, objects closer and further away get blurry. 4. Other more subtle cues... like atmospheric diffusion... The "catch" with "3D" is that, while it can utilize, or simulate. all of these, it can only do so for a single fixed image plane. So, for example, if you take the example of the original Imax 3D movie with the T-Rex.... When you look at the T-Rex, you see slightly different images for each eye, and old T-Rex is in sharp focus... And both the bushes in the foreground, and the mountains in the background, are out of focus... So all good there. BUT what if, instead of keeping your eyes locked on old T-Rex, you glance down at the bush in the foreground? If we were in real life, our eyes would adjust to the parallax, AND THE BUSH WOULD COME INTO FOCUS, AND T-REX WOULD GO OUT OF FOCUS. But, with our 3D movie, the bush remains out of focus, with the wrong parallax, and T-Rex, out of the corner of our eye, fails to go out of focus or shift parallax. The result is a flat out jarring dissonance... In other words the effect works well IF YOU KEEP YOUR EYES LOCKED ON T-REX LIKE THE DIRECTOR INTENDED. But, if instead you look around, it collapses in a very jarring and unpleasant way. (The director could limit this by using fewer cues... or using them less aggressively... but that would make the 3D effect less compelling and defeat the whole purpose of using it in the first place.) So my advice, which sounds simple but really isn't, is this... 3D movies will look much better if you "behave" and do your best to "keep your eyes where the director wants you to"... This both enables the cues they intentionally included to work their best... And prevents you from hitting that jarring dissonance when you attempt to go against what the director intended... ..................... Of course what we call "3D" is really "stereoscopic"... so it does have serious limitations over the user experience real 3D could deliver if it actually existed. I watched “Avatar: The Way of Water” at the theatre in 3D and enjoyed it very much, I also thought the 3D enhanced the experience and fit the film’s environment. I don’t get headaches from the glasses, but do sometimes find the way they sit on my nose or around my ears can be slightly uncomfortable, if I went to a lot of 3D movies I’d want to get my own pair of glasses that fit well (is that a thing, does anyone have a pair they like?)
I don’t have a 3D TV, but would be interested in a 4K set of this and the original.

I don’t have a 3D TV, but would be interested in a 4K set of this and the original. “3 Active” …..are my aftermarket glasses 🤓 of choice when not using the Samsung glasses supplied. Much greater comfort and block out light from entering the sides Better than OEM. Homework is needed to be sure those 3 Active are compatible with any particular 3-D television set. |

Wow (I can’t make that happen (115!)…..If I did I’d be eating popcorn in the front yard watching the movie through the front window. I suppose the good part of that would be the nocturnal creatures getting a midnight treat when the flick was over. |

I’ll be ordering the 3D as well! When done properly the 3D experience cannot be beat!
By being done properly, I’m speaking of the production itself. Over the years I have seen a few 3D movies suffer from the “need” to include “some cool visual effects”.
I sure wish somebody would produce an excellent 3D TV but it may be a thing of the past! Like Long Play records, OH! Wait! LOL

I've preordered Avatar- The Way of Water. I have Avatar in 3D and it is great. I can view on either a 2015 65" Samsung 4k tv that has 3D or on a 120' screen via a Sony VPL-HW40ES projector. I have 50 or so 3d Blu-ray movies.

I think the real question is…… Did you ever see the original “Avatar”? Yes I did, but it’s been awhile since viewing at the AMC, thus I’ve forgotten what I thought. Anyhow, I asked because I see the 4K UHD-blurays are up for preordering for June 20 release. Long story short, I’ve preordered both from Amazon, so I’ll be putting them in my to-watch-movie-que. I still have several 4K UHD-blurays I’ve not gotten around to as well on-going streaming series I’m in the middle of. |

Yes I did. …….. if you enjoyed avatar, I believe you will enjoy the second film in 4K without 3-D, and it would be worth buying in that format. if you never bought a copy of avatar, maybe you will be able to get a twin pack of both films in 4K when they become available in a few months. It is both a good sequel, and a good storyline, but mostly IMHO, it was a chance for James Cameron to spread his wings with his underwater filming, expertise, and being able to integrate that knowledge into the film. |

I have done back to back comparisons of the blu-ray vs 4k UHD. The 4k UHD has such good color that the Blu-Rays can have trouble matching it. I expect the world of Pandora to be stunning! |

My first use of the “Amazon Locker” to grab a copy of this film. I’m cheap and wanted free shipping. Happens to be this particular locker is in my regular travel path, so cost nothing to stop in there Fourth of July week…..We will enjoy a 3-D back to back AVATAR session! |

OK - So I watched this tonight due to the generosity of garbulky, who loaned me his disc. And??? It was a fine tale with amazing special effects. The cinematography alone is beyond anything I’ve seen. But… The plot wasn’t in the same league. My major objection to the movie is, in a word, credibility. Now wait, I hear you objecting, “this is a SCIENCE FICTION movie - whufo you axin’ about credibility?” Yes, I can offer a lot of leeway to a movie that has an essentially “unreal” premise to start with, but this flick pushed every one of my boundaries of tolerance: The perpetual baddies, “the sky people,” make their inevitable reprise. Last time, they mined “unobtanium,” this time, they want whale brains. Really? Despite having mastered intergalactic flight, the baddies have only 20th century machine guns and grenade launchers? Really? Jake Sulley (sic) is a genetically engineered body, yet he’s fertile? Really? Not only is little Jakey fertile, but half his kids are Aquaman incarnate? Really? I could go on, but the gist of my objections is clear. So what DO I consider “credible science fiction?” Two shows that come to mind immediately are “The Martian” and “The Expanse.” You’re most welcome to disagree with me. I only wish that “Avatar, The Way of Water” had a plot worthy of its cinematography. |
