I stumble on that in AVSforum and it was so interesting that I posted it here. "The design goal at Wilson Benesch has been to build speaker cabinets that would convince listeners that acoustically the cabinet would be invisible. To the engineers at Wilson Benesch the solution was clear. Using Carbon Fiber to build cabinets delivered on that promise. With Carbon Fiber as the rear waves hit the inside of the cabinet they are almost instantly absorbed, bouncing around the billions and billions of carbon molecules and quickly transformed to heat. This happens because sound travels through carbon fiber at 18350 meters per second, much faster than wood were the speed is only 3300 meters per second. " VELOCITY OF SOUND IN METERS PER SECOND: RUBBER 40 CORK 400 LEAD 1158 WATER 1433 ACRYLIC 2680 CONCRETE 3200 GOLD 3240 WOOD 3300 BRASS 3475 COPPER 3900 HARDWOOD 3960 GLASS 3962 BRICK 4176 ALUMINUM 4877 IRON 5130 PYREX 5640 STEEL 6100 DIAMOND 12000 CARBON FIBER 18350" If that material so great may be Emotiva should use it for next speakers generation

Carbon fiber cabinets? It would cost a fortune just for the material. It would be cool though. They could call them the "ERT 10.3 F1 Edition" lol. I'd paint mine in Team Mclaren Mercedes colors.

Another possibility, line the wood cabinet with a layer of carbon fiber. Would it yield similar benefits? Don't know, thinking out of the box...ahem. ;D

Another F1 fan! Tag McLaren did audio components awhile back, too bad they didn't stick with it, your idea might have been a reality....

I'm a huge F1 fan as well. Looking forward to the upcoming Singapore race. I am supporting Sebastian Vettel, but it doesn't look good for him at the moment. And I'm actually employed in composite materials science, and I can tell you that the price of carbon fibre composites does in no way warrant the price for those Wilson Benesch speakers.

I actually started an F1 thread in the Green Room at the beginning of the season, I'll go dig it out.Yes, carbon fibre is one of the best materials out there but also one of the most expensive.

At a price of $20/kg carbon fibres are rather expensive, but you don't need that many kilos for making a speaker.
I'm not saying that it is a cheap solution. Just supplying some facts.

So it's not prohibitively expensive. Also you can mold whatever shape you want and after all it could sounds better and it will looks amassing. Another benefit - shipping cost will falls down significantly since CF way lighter than fiberboard And about F1 kind of colors, isn't it cool?

As a BMW owner, I've been trying to support Kubica, but it's been tough this year.... No worries on Vettel, he'll be a world champion someday....I said that about Schuey early in his career, along with Kimi and Lewis back all the way to their GP2 days, and I've been right so far...hope that trend continues! However, I did NOT predict Brawn to be anything better than mid-pack...but then again who did?!?

I love F1 so much, I've put off vacations in order to watch a race(that's before I had a DVR of course). I've always been a Honda fan, dating back to the Senna days, so I've become a Button/Barrichello fan over the years as well. Hopefully the Brawn Mercedes boys will be able to keep things together for rest of the season. Rubens needs a championship more than anybody. All those years under Shuey's fame, he deserves it. We need to dig out that F1 thread. I could about F1 all day lol.

Another F1 fan! I was so looking forward to Schumey returning. And former Renault principles....
Come on Bernie - F1 back at INDY!
I think the next speakers should be a mid-sized horn. Hopefully, the upcoming sub would be fast enough and musical to keep up with the horns.
Kimi needs to start being Kimi again - wild parties; gorilla costumes; his usual relaxation. He's too confined by corporate.

Ferrari tends to have that affect on drivers. I wish drivers were like they were in the 50's-80's. Smoking, drinking, partying, fighting, hard asses. These guys now act like they just went to their Mother's funeral for crying out loud! That's why I miss Coultard. He was the last of that breed IMO. Oh, and yes, horns would be a cool addition to the Emo line.

I would think carbon fiber would have to be fairly thick to absorb or dampen anything. A few makers use it in string instruments about 4 or 5 layers thick, and they resonate quite well. I would think this would be the opposite of what you would want in a speaker cabinet. You're not even talking about pure CF when you make something with it. You have to pour a resin over it to make it keep any shape, so really you would have to look at the characteristic of that mixed with the CF. I would think it would be more likely to reflect more energy than wood. The car audio guys have been making speaker pods out of CF for years, not because it sounds better, but because it looks cool.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no rocket surgeon... just a guy with some doubts. To me it sounds like Wilson has some half-bakery going on.

Here's what doesn't add up for me...
While carbon fiber by itself does absorb sound the best... An enclosure made from carbon fiber is not 100% pure carbon fiber. It's mostly resin. Depending on the process... there could be as little as 20% carbon fiber. Insulation and sound absorbing materials have one thing in common. Surface area. So if they were to fill the enclosure with a carbon fiber wool then yes... you would get better sound absorption. The weave of the carbon fiber could also enhance or detract the sound absorption properties of the enclose as well.
Bottom line is that without actually seeing one of their boxes... It's all just guesswork.
