The Oppo BDP83 is a great player. They are also coming out with a less expensive BR player soon. I think it would be very difficult to compete against them. Another strategy might be to use the Oppo BDP83 "guts" and apply an Emotiva shell to it. Oppo has worked with Ayre for a ~$10,000 BR player (not out yet -- see AVS thread) and NuForce for a sanctioned Oppo BDP83 mod. That would limit the R&D and still allow people to get their Emotiva look. You could either use the new cheaper BR (?? model #), the 83, or the SE (or NE) versions. Thoughts? Mike The "guts and shell" Sounds like the best idea. That way all the problems, glitches and firmware things are handled by Oppo. I'd still remove some of the extra bs to sell at a lower price point.

...I'd still remove some of the extra bs to sell at a lower price point. Oppo is already doing that. A cheaper unit with less features is expected later this month.

I currently have two blu-ray players.....a PS3 and a Sony BDP-S350.......so I would most likely be out of the loop on this one.

If it's going to be under $200, then I would expect ABT to be gone. Maybe it stays in the $200-$300 range.

Lots of people wanna buy? Not me. Strip analog section, sacd/dvd-a, ethernet etc. More of a bluray transport with hdmi. I couldn't care less about streaming content, bd live etc. Just play blu ray and dvd well. Well, don't forget about licensing cost, mf cost, etc. costs. In this case you would get generic BD player (with MSRP about $100). If you wanna make it profitable It must be a big scale mass production with sale through chain stores like BB or so. Other words Emotiva has to turn itself into something like LG or Samsung and forget about current business model and "big family" kind of relationship with customers Hope it wont happen...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. To me the perfect BRD player would have no analog outputs, would have a world-class power supply and transport, have the fastest available processor and three or four times the memory required by the spec to create the fastest software load times in the industry. It would have excellent DVD up-scaling capability and video re-sampling for things like slo mo, zoom and fast motion. I don't care if it supports profile 2.0 or not but it would probably have to for sales sake. Price point? Greater than $250 and less than $1000, but in any case less than comparable units from Sony, Panasonic, or Denon.

Prices are determined by the marketing department, not by production.

Prices are determined by the marketing department, not by production. I know, but seriously... There is no explanation for this kind of BS. They did absolutely NOTHING to justify this pricetag. I felt sad seeing a company like Lexicon abusing their so called "High-End" status like this. It's nothing but a bubble

Lexicon put an Oppo BDP83 inside of a Lexicon case. I don't think that suggests that Emotiva can build a competitive $499 BR player from scratch. I _do_ think that they could put a BDP83 inside an Emotiva shell and add a premium to it and sell it very well. There is nothing wrong with paying for cosmetics, if you know that is what you are paying for. I'm all for it. Mike

Plus you also get media streaming capability. (and I'm a xbox360 fan!)

Not $3K more like the Lexicon, but maybe a couple hundred.

Mike Not from scratch, but putting an Oppo in a Emo shell doesn't add much to the final costs. Let's say Oppo makes this player for around $200. The only thing different is the cosmetics, nothing more, nothing less. Hey, if it's going to cost me $599, I'm happy to pay the bill!

I think Ayre/Charles Hansen (which is doing a lot of internal changes as well as a new shell -- for ~$10K) said that Oppo only gave them $50 off MSRP for the Ayre BR player based on the Oppo base. Not that $50 matters at that level, but I don't think Oppo's cost of manufacture is only $200. Mike EDIT/Links:Ayre DX-5 thread (@ AVS):www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1181755Ayre discounted price = $400Link: www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17402589#post17402589
