I'm not trying to push blame here, but from reading on other forums there are a lot of reports of HDMI issues with the 722. You can take that as just hear say as I do not have one here to test, but I was reading some time back about the same issue with Onkyo recievers and if I remember correctly I believe there was a new software revision for the 722 to be released which might be out by now. Again this is all second hand so take it for what it is as this is all the information I have on that particular unit.

Lonnie - I'm one of the 722 owners, and frankly I don't care if I have to use component instead of HDMI. There is no loss in picture or sound quality since all it can output is 1080i. Getting rid of the HDMI cable completely resolved this issue in my mind. Is this just a band-aid? sure, but it's a permanent band-aid in my mind. And the suggestions to go in (as a last resort) and reformat the H/D and lose all my 40+ hours of recorded HD content is unacceptable. This just isn't that big of an issue.
My picture watching the Olympics live on NBC via Dish 722 is pristine, so the UMC's converting 1080i to 1080p is working just fine.

Lonnie, I'm still waiting on a UMC-1, but this issue affects me as I have the above mentioned Dish receiver. Currently I have the Dish connected to a Harman Kardon AVR via HDMI and have no handshake issues, save for speaker 'pops' when changing between DD and standard audio channels. I am a logical person and if the UMC is introduced and issues arrise, logically it would seem the handshake issue would be w/ the UMC. Although logical, I do not fully understand the 'handshake' issue. But if an existing AVR and the sat receiver communicate correctly it seems as if the UMC and receiver should also be able to. Just using reason?? Tom

This may or may not have anything to do with the Dish situation, but thought I'd share.
I use Direct TV and have the HR20-700 DVR. Direct TV issued an automatic software update on Jan. 27 that has caused numerous issues with HDMI, including audio drop outs, loss of signal handshaking, shifts from 5.1 to 2.0 during HD broadcasts, etc. DTV has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix, supposedly. I mention this because the signal issues corresponded with the arrival of the UMC-1 and in my situation I assumed it was the UMC-1's fault. I have since found out it is affecting several other brands of HDMI pre/pros, although most receiver users seem to not be affected.
As I said, it may or may not be a similar situation for your Dish guys, but I recommend you look around the Interwebz and make sure it's not a universal effect happening out there with other people.

A quick update... Vietmedic is reporting no issues with his UMC-1 and DISH 722 setup.
Are they any others out there that have this setup that don't have issues?
I copied his setup, but still no improvements. Any chance someone at Emotiva can replicate this in their lab?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but does anyone know if this has been resolved in any way? I just got my UMC-1 last week and have a 722. I noticed the issue on TV2 right away and have just been unplugging the HDMI out of the 722 to avoid the UMC-1 from locking up the unit. Using component and optical out of the 722 to the UMC-1 is less than desirable.
Thanks

If you are referring to the nightly lockup where the unit hangs partially on After the nightly update the answer is disappointingly NO.

I love the UMC-1 so far but that is an enormous blemish! I'm not saying Dish is not at fault either but I had an Onkyo PR-SC886 before and it worked without a hitch. The UMC-1 definitely sounds better though, especially in direct mode for music. What if I use the receiver in single tuner mode instead of dual, is the issue still present like that?

Using component and optical out of the 722 to the UMC-1 is less than desirable. Thanks Why do you say fiber optic output is less than desirable? The 722 can only output 1080i so component cables and fiber are exactly the same quality as using HDMI and you will never have the nightly lockup issue.

A certified Dish Network installer told me that Dish Instructs them to attempt to convince the customer to allow Component Video/Digital Audio hookup. Dish knows they have a problem with HDMI and their solution, at this time, is to go with component video/digital audio. As been pointed out, the video and audio performance is the same either way so you would not be sacrificing anything.

But if your display unit is Component then the UMC will force you to change to a 480P output when you run into a protected channel on dish. Also, with this firmware the HMDI vid/audio sync is much better and seem to lock audio on format changed much faster. This new firmware is really nice with HDMI except for the nightly lockup/umc off issue.

He wouldn't even use HDMI to hook it up. He said they don't even send him out with HDMI cables to hook up anymore. He also said 50% of the time by the next day, the customer is on the phone wondering why they are having video dropouts, or popping in their audio. He left me with 3 extra components and 2 fiber optic cables instead. I have it hooked up through HDMI and haven't had any problems, But I am not trying to use surround sound.

I have been away for a while, but I still see people having problems via HDMI with Dish 722 & UMC-1, and still people are blaming the Dish 722 for the problem. I have different recievers hooked up via HDMI to the 722 and never had a problem. Introduce the UMC into the picture via HDMI and the Dish would lock up during the nighttime software upgrade everynight or sometimes even before that. Tried several different Dish 722 when I was having the problem and everyone would lock up at night time. Take the UMC out of the picture and everything would work fine again. Hook the UMC back up and the Dish 722 would lock up once again. Had a friend who had a Dish 722 and a different reciever and no problems for years, got the UMC and within a few days the Dish would lock up. It is not rocket science here LOL, I am not trying to get the devoted EMO guys upset here but this is what I experienced & a Friend and it seems like other people on the this forum have also. Yes the easy way around it is to hook up via Component.

I wasn't able to start viewing until almost 10 minutes later. This was totally unacceptable.

I understand that but my reasoning is purely for cable organization and simplicity. Also, the only component cable I have is like 12' and I only need about 2' max so I'd have to purchase another cable now too.

The nightly lockup doesn't affect Denon, Onkyo or the Marantz AVRs/Pre pros...
It's a UMC-1 thing due to some EDID request from the Echostar IRD and a screwy UMC-1 response! WTF does the UMC even respond when in an off state is beyond me... let alone send screwy data that actually hard locks an STB bootloader.
I just replaced my Bell 9200 with a 9241 and it has this lockup if the UMC-1 is turned off at the 3AM reboot/update.
Anyone in the Vancouver/Victoria area want to buy a UMC-1?
I have three video boards, two audio boards and the analog output section as well as two metal remotes one unopened and I have two working test mics. It has the latest board revisions and firmware and is the black backed chassis.
This is the final nail in the coffin for me brothers!
$400 bucks...
PM if interested

what type of service you all got? fois, cable or sat how many rooms do you have serviced within the home for paytv and ftatv.. while cable/sat/fois might have issues with hdmi, I hate to say this if you experience through hdmi the problem will appear over all other connections you choose to use... as the root cause of the issue is going to be from the rf connection leading to the cable stu so before you go blaming hdmi, component, composite, s-video, l/r analog analog digital, 3.5mm-toslink digital tos-tos sp.dif digital.. any issue you have with 1 connection is to be present over the remaining connections as it is a service issue not component issuethrough the output of the cable box.. also note: powered distro amps used in boosting signal for tv reception is known to cause issues in = reception in general so before blaming your stu you might want to check the rf lines you have connected to the stu.. the hdmi issue on the stu lonnie has mentioned may also be by-product issue relating to the rf signal, my experience come 2 or more stu's off of a sat link for over 10 years.. so before people go blaming hdmi or other connection for static drops through an avr or processor, take note how many items you are running over rf for stu and tv signal...

Most of us with the issue have Dish Network satellite. It has been proven that the issue is realted to HDMI and the UMC-1. Using component and optical resolves the problem and everything works fine. I had an Onkyo PR-SC886 before this and everything worked fine. I don't think there is any question that the issue is HDMI and the UMC-1. Mine happens within 20-30 seconds on TV2, I have to go out into my living room every night and unplug the HDMI cable going into the UMC-1 just to watch TV in the bedroom.

PM if interested I understand your frustration, when I first got the UMC I spent more time troubleshooting it than enjoying it. I was told by many people here on the forum it is not the UMC it is Dish Network, so I took time off from work having Dish Network come here and Troubleshoot and replace my 722 and that night it would lock up again, Did this with 3 Dish 722 recievers. Had the 722 prior to the UMC with different HT recievers never had a problem, got the UMC and my problems started. Contacted EMO on this via Email and they never got back to me, sent several emails still no response, couldn't call because I work 12 hour days, and couldn't call from work because I didn't want to lose my job. Finally Dan I believe sent an Email to Lonnie and Lonnie email me said they are working on it, well 6-8 weeks later they came out with a firmware upgrade that did nothing to fix this problem. EMO doesn't even have a Dish Network 722 reciever in their hands even to this date to look at this problem. I missed out on the time allow to return it, thinking they were going to fix this problem. Another thing that frustrates me with the UMC is this Firmware Update process, it is the most complicated and a real crap shoot, anyway just opening up an old wound here. LOL
