I have replaced three PCBs.... two complete UMC-1s. I've flashed it over 10 times...
Almost two years later...
The bloody thing still doesn't work properly!
I love Emo and the gang and all...
BUT
I FRIGGING HATE THE UMC-1!
I've never had, and I'm a tech guy, a piece of equipment with so many flaws and issues!
UMC-1=LEMON

AND they (Tonewinner) are STILL using Cirrus DSP chipsets!
Cross me off of the XMC list even if I get 40% off!
It's that friggin Cirrus chipset dev tools and TW/Indian devs that are the problem!
The fact they coded the LFE processing/summing the way they did (fundamentally flawed) proves the firmware dev is incompetent and it took a codebase rewrite to fix it... The codebase at this point is headed in the right direction but I don't get why they didn't do that a year plus ago!
The LFE processing flaws in the DSP firmware speaks VOLUMES as to TW/India ability to deliver consumer AVR/Pre DSPs with working code.
Cirrus Logic=INCOMPETENT Indian=INCOMPETENT TW=INCOMPETENT

How the hell can it take almost three years to dev the firmware for that DSP...
AND after that much time...
IT'S STILL SCREWY!
I mean the LFE summing flaws shows the dev doesn't understand audio xovers or audio period really!
And the fact they sat there for almost two years working with a house with fuxored foundation...
And just now after this amount of time finally rewrote the code base foundation...
The latest firmware is where it should have been within the first six months of release!
WTF can't Cirrus Logic, ToneWinner and Dan (the Indian) employ competent developers!
I really hope someone lost their job at TW/Indian over this HORSESHIT
and also I hope heads rolled at ToneWinner because they are at fault as well!
I also hope Emo got major discounts on lots or even complete refunds...
If not... and I was king... my lawyers would declare WAR
This product has seriously DAMAGED Emotiva's reputation...
On that level alone I'd sue Dan

OK
I have to follow up on these pissed rantings...
FINALLY...
After how many board revs and firmware versions...
The UMC-1 is actually...
WORKING PROPERLY!!!
It seem someone else have taking over the firmware development as the fundamentally flawed bass/LFE and xover issues are now FIXED.
I just thought I'd let anyone know this who's been reading my angry rants.

Uh, my satellite receiver is a Dish VIP-622 and HDMI works pretty well. Tell us more, I (as many others)have a VIP622 and 2-722s and none of them will will make it through the required nightly updates when connected via HDMI without locking up until the UMC is turned on and then the Dish box will finish its reboot . In the meantime any events scheduled to record will be missed. So, do tell how you have it working properly (besides leaving the umc on 24/7) Thanks in Advance Phil

^Oh, that is a big problem. I would not be happy if I was gone for a few days and missed a bunch of scheduled recordings. DVR's are the crack of the day now. Once you get used to watching all of your programs this way it is tough to watch anything live anymore.

I setup my 722K by running HDMI for video from the sat. rx. to the tv hdmi input. Then ran the audio from the 722 on toslink to the UMC; I have had no problems at all and I can listen to audio through the tv without turning on the full audio unit, or mute the tv and bring up the full audio unit. Happy with the result...

Just noticed this thread. I have a VIP-622, HDMI to UMC-1, and never had the first issue. In fact the only issue I've ever had with my UMC is that it used to not alway fully shut down. Since the last update it's been just as dependable as (and better sounding than) any receiver I've owned. To steal a phase from Big Dan, "It just works."

So, do tell how you have it working properly (besides leaving the umc on 24/7) Thanks in Advance Phil Well, my idea of working properly is that I don't have any issues with failure of the UMC-1 to lock on to the HDMI signal (which was the issue I read the most about). The closest I have come to an issue is that sometimes when I use the 30 sec skip when watching a recorded program there will be a brief (second or two) period of "static" from the audio before it settles down. I changed the audio from the HDMI to Toslink to see if it would make a difference; don't think it did. Regardless, it does not rise to the level of a "problem" for me. I would put up with a LOT given how much better the UMC-1 sounds than the Onkyo 705 that I replaced with the UMC-1. I am unfamiliar with the problem you describe, I just saw that this thread had been posted to and looked at the last post. I haven't read the whole thread. I have never observed the problem you describe with my system.

steps to repro this issue [Emotiva you should do this; i've already logged a bug and no response] I have 2 umc-1's attached to 722's and they do the same thing
Dish 722 - attach via hdmi to umc-1 - attach tv2 to a display (this is the sd tv2 side) so you can watch the 722 crawl to a halt
Have the 722 on and turn off the umc-1 but leave it attached via hdmi and plugged in.
Start watching tv on tv2; after a bit (~5min) the 722 will crawl to a halt and usually mine will start rebooting.

I simply leave the UMC-1 on because the BellTV 9242 on 2AM watchdog reboot will hang on bootloader, time-out and reboot to bootloader, time-out and reboot again and again and again. If you turn on the UMC-1 when it's in this state then it boot fine. This wasn't the case with my older Echostar 9200 but it's the case with the 9242. I have no idea what device is to blame as I don't have the expensive HDMI test gear required to determine the cause. Anyone looking to purchase test equipment should take a look at this unit. www.quantumdata.com/products/780.aspIt's like the APx585 HDMI option but less money and also can be a generator like the AccuPel DVG-5000. I don't own one but I'd sure love one! I LUV good test gear! A lot of outfits cheapout on test gear as it's so expensive... Checkout this QD video on the 780 www.quantumdata.com/products/780/780_Gen_Video.htmlThat one nice piece of test kit for a guy like me! For an outfit like Emotiva this is THE unit for testing HDMI! www.quantumdata.com/products/980.aspThe 980 Gen 3 is absolutely the best HDMI test intrument in the industry. MDS and Emo should have one or rent them.www.quantumdata.com/products/980/980_Gen/video_directory_980_Gen.htmlThe Gen 3 does 297 Mhz so it's 4K and 1080p frame sequential compatible!!! It captures ALL DATA ISLANDS and and CONTROL PACKETS with complete time stampings and has an absolutely amazing realtime HDCP debugging and is even better at audio analysis. It would be great for DSD SACD transport analysis and possible BM dev. If I had that unit I could tell you EXACTLY what's happening when the bloody IRD hang/reboots on watchdog reboot. The UI is absolutely amazing and it makes the other outfits test gear look... so... 90s... LOL OR If you had the time you could come up with your own solution using this... www.digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?NavPath=2,400,836&Prod=ATLYS Some Germans recently used that dev platform to hack HDMI entirely. www.tomshardware.com/news/Blu-ray-HDMI-HDCP-Digilent-FPGA,14105.html ;D What the APx525 is for AUDIO... The Quantum Data 980 HDMI Analyzer is for VIDEO!

I'm still really frustrated by the issue. Every night I have to go to the living room on my knees and unplug the HDMI out of the Dish 722 so I can watch TV in the bedroom (TV2). I'm going to order a component cable and Toslink because I'm sick of doing the above. This is a major glitch though.

I have Dish VIP612. No problems whatsoever with all EMO setup hooked up HDMI. I try to mess it up, with no success.

I think Dish is aware that they have issue with HDMI on both the 622 and 722 boxes because they instruct their authorized installers to use Component Video/Digital audio instead of HDMI when installing these two boxes. The internet is full of Dish owners complaining about HDMI issues with just about every single brand of pre/pro. No single brand always has issues, but no single brand is without issues using HDMI on the 622/722.
DirecTV also has HDMI issues similar to what Dish experiences and their authorized installers have also been instructed to use Component Video/Digital Audio in lieu of HDMI, if the customer allows the substitution. I am not sure why Dish and DirecTV are having these issues, but their tech support engineers say they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. They have been saying this for at least the past three years.
