Sure, the link I posted to above is from a sub manufacturer, but I still trust their advice since they (kind of like Emotiva) basically are a bunch of enthusiasts talking about a subject they really know & love. But, yes, maintaining a critical stance is probably always a good idea when searching for info on the net. Thanks for the forum.blu-ray.com/subwoofers/ link by the way - that's a good one. Here's another link, for those interested, where another enthusiast, this time a Finnish bloke by the name of Ilkka Rissanen, took it upon himself to test just about every subwoofer he could lay his hands on at the time. www.hometheatershack.com/forums/subwoofer-tests-archived/6015-index-subwoofer-tests-manufacturer-model.html

Hey has anyone listened to the Velodyne impact mini's? Was thinking maybe two would work out ok or would it be better to get one more expensive one.

Don't go equating a sinlge more expensive sub as being better than 2 less expensive subs. That doesn't always work out in the real world. 2 subs will usually integrate better in a room than one, and will also have the tendancy for lower frequency response and increased output, compared to a single sub. What you need to do , is try to audition any item you are interested in, so you can make your own informed decision, instead of relying soley on the ideas and thoughts of others.

Actually Animo I dont have much of any experience with subs so I kind of was looking at others opinions of some good models as well as what basic features to look for. I really dont have the funds to audition as it costs a good bit to ship to and from. I know what you are saying but did that with some speakers and it turned out to be a pain and I lost more than I would have liked. So perhaps two of the Velodyne impacts would sound good then? The room Im in is not that big and has sloped ceilings.

As far as auditions go, you can always see who lives close by to you, and find out what they are using. Ask if it's ok to stop by...(bring beer). and listen to how things sound. Always try to be objective however, because the same thing in your home may sound different, but at least you get an idea.

On the topic of down vs front-firing -
After doing some research on subs in my price range I decided I wanted to go with a down-firing sealed sub, most of the boards were saying that would be more accurate for music. I ended up getting a Martin Logan Abyss, which can be converted to down or front. I first had it in the down position but it was shaking the pictures on the walls and sounding kind of boomy, not all that musical. So I changed it to front-firing and I liked the sound better right away.
Now I didn't play around with positioning or tuning it much at all, I just went with a corner placement and set the SPL to match my fronts. So I realize there's still a lot of variables and maybe I could do better in down-firing mode. If anyone has some good tips or articles on sub placement and tuning I'd like to read them. My room is 13x17x8 with pretty thick carpeting.
I guess the point I wanted to make is even though I wasn't looking for a convertible design it does provide some added flexibility in the down vs front argument.

Just Google subwoofer crawl test and you will have a general idea of how to find the best location for your sub, or just watch this video for starters.

Well another thing is I rent the upper part of a house for now so maybe the two sub deal should be delayed until I move out.

Well another thing is I rent the upper part of a house for now so maybe the two sub deal should be delayed until I move out. Actually 2 subs will help keep the neighbors happy, when you can drop the gains and lower the xover to smooth out the freqeuncy response(which 2 subs will help you do vs. just a single one) your able to minimize room resonations. Most people have the mindset to use multiple subs to increase output(which it will), I on the otherhand do multiple subs for a smoother flatter frequency response with less room vibrations.

That is very true ntrain. When I added a second sub, it really was magical. Way more output, with lower gains, but most importantly, it was so much flatter, with much less "bloating" and boominess if you know what I mean.
