THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON MORE THAN a couple of occasions. Trying to make connections and get my gear to work. A little background. I've been reading and messing around with A/V receivers and speakers and video tape and DVD for the better part of 30 years. I have a habit of getting a set-up in place and then don't mess with it. I've got a picture and sound. Don't mess with it. Last year I decided it was time for some upgrades. I wanted a taste of that really good sound that's out there. I have a small shelf of SACD and DVD-A. I was familure with Emotiva. (I have Rocket speakers) Everybody was beating the bush about the new XPA amps and there were whispers about a new prepro. So my first step, buy a XPA-5 and get on the pre order list for the UMC-1. So, eight months ago, my XPA came in. I guess I just assumed but no pre outs on my receiver. The XPA sat here for half a year. But then 2 weeks ago I got the e-mail. My USMC-1 showed up last week. After walking past that box all week, I decided I had some time today. A nice raining day. Raised that amp up on the rack, pre on top. unplugged my sources from the A/V receiver,(I only have three-Direct TV SAT, Oppo blue ray, and PS3). 3HDMI cables from source to UMC, one out to Mits LED, one power cord to PS Audio conditioner, 5 interconnects to Amp. The only thing I can get on the TV is the OSD. I went thru and tried to name the inputs. But I just get nothing. I know it's going to be something simple that you guys are going to jump all over, But if I don't get a Little help, I'll be watching the Super Bowl from the sports bar on Sunday. in the SF Bay Area. Steve.

Have you went to set up and assigned inputs.Go to menu, select set up,then input set up,go down list and assign, cable, dvd etc....Example go to down to cable, enter,go down to audio, enter then assign the input you used, then do video. There should be info if you have a manual, good luck.

...But then 2 weeks ago I got the e-mail. My USMC-1 showed up last week... Well now there's your problem - apparently you ordered the US Marine Corps instead of a pre/pro! Sorry, bad joke out of the way... Moe speaks the truth - now that you're hooked up, you need to go through the input setup. I went through and re-named my inputs to match my devices (e.g. yours could be PS3, Sat, Oppo). Then you set whether or not they're a display input associated with the device (e.g. my SACD player does not output video), and if it is, which input you're hooked into for that device. Now you specify what you're using for the audio input. Be careful: make sure if you're switching to HDMI audio for the first time that you've also configured your source to output audio over HDMI - most won't output to optical and HDMI simultaneously. Lastly, and this is crucial, you need to set up the trigger for each input so that your amp is turned on. Otherwise, you'll turn on the UMC, the amp will fire up momentarily, then turn itself right off (making audio reproduction somewhat difficult!) And you'll feel really silly contacting tech support on that one. Um, no, I uh, I wouldn't know that feeling personally or anything, because I would never make that silly of a mistake... Also, the UMC comes with an insane number of inputs - you'll probably want to go through and turn off the ones you're not using, so you don't have to cycle through them when you're changing inputs. Hope this helps - while watching the big game at a sports bar can be a good time, I know I would prefer my own beer, my own snacks, and my own friends in my own house. Hopefully we can get you dialed in before Sunday!

Hey, Steve, where in the area are you? I'm visiting SF at the moment and if you don't get things straightened out, I might be able to lend you a hand. I'm downtown near the Mission and Castro.

PS This is another reason why I'm a huge fan of networked receivers/pre. We could simply use VNC on buddies computer and enter the controls for the UMC-1 via HTTP and make the settings. PSS Here is hoping the XMC-1 will have HTTP server control!!! PLEASE!!! Think about it Emo... you guys could even use VNC to a machine on customers LAN and help user make appropriate adjustment! I use it all the time with Denon sales when customers screw stuff up. I simply VNC into their LAN and use browser to Denon piece then I upload config file and it's back to normal after say the kids start messing with it.

Bill- I'm in Antioch, about 45 miles inland. What are your plans. Are you here next week? Would you have some free time? Would you be willing to come out for an afternoon? I could pick you up at BART in Pittsburg. Depending on which day, I might be able to come in and get you. I'm feeling really stupid about all this but if there's a chance to get some smarts I'd like to give it a try. Steve.

Steve, I do plan to be around this week. I'll check out the Bart lines. I'm pretty sure I'm only about 3/4 of a mile from a Bart station. Which days are best for you? I am working, but on an east coast schedule, so I can probably leave here around noon/1-ish PM.

Bill- I'm just floored. When I first floated this message out there, I hoped someone close buy would respond. But I guess I didn't really have faith. If we can work this out it would be really cool. I can be here all day Wed. and all day Fri. Any other day would have to be after 4:00. The BART train would take about an hour one way and cost 3or4 dollars. If you wanted to take it out, I would be able to take you back, maybe after some lunch or dinner? The train is simple. As long as you catch the right one. It runs from Market St.in SF and runs out, end of the line in Pittsburg.
I'm here by myself, so the chance of a little company is a good thing. What do you think? Steve.

Hey Steve, Let me know if things don't work out with Bill. I live in San Jose and could make a trip out to your place to help you out. I work during the week, so I wouldn't be able to make it out until the weekend, but if you can wait a week, I'm game. Darien

Steve, I checked out the BART web site. You're right it's a 1hr ride, and I can catch it at 16th and Mission direct all the way to Pittsburg for $6. Wednesday is open for me, so let's shoot for that. I can probably even leave a little earlier than noon. I'll send a private message with my mobile number and we can chat and figure out the details. It looks like BART runs pretty often, so catching a train shouldn't be hard.
Talk to you soon.

Steve, one more thought, according to Big Dan's UMC-1 status update, it is likely there will be a new firmware and upgrade tool available on Monday/Tuesday. Let's plan to update your UMC-1 to the latest code while we're at it.

Dairen- I think we will try to go on Wed. But thanks for the offer. I've been going thru the message boards and looking at the locations and avitars of members trying to see if any were close to the Bay Area. Yours was one of the ones I noticed, but I thought you were futher south. I didn't read it close enough. Again, thanks for your offer. Maybe you could come up some weekend for a music and/or movie night. I know I would like to see some other set-ups althou mine is just a 15x15 added on family room, I bet it's going to sound sweet. Steve.

Steve, don't go buying anything, if we need a USB memory stick I'll have one with me. Provided the firmware code is released, I'll download it prior to coming and make sure we're ready to go.

Great. What time do you think you will be leaving SF? I can bring a book and wait outside the station. When you arrive on the train you go upstairs. Then over the freeway on the foot bridge, and down the other side to the parking lot. I can be waiting by the stairs, leading to the lot, holding a small sign that says"BILL Lifesaver." You will Know me. Everyone says I either look like Kenny Rodgers or Santa. Grey on top with gray/white beard, round on bottom.
I'm really looking forward to your visit. Thanks, Steve.
