Pat, thanks for the heads up. It's ironic to me that of all the cables I do carry on a regular basis, that isn't one of them.
Steve, let me go through my bag and a few boxes of misc cables at my friend's place here. I might be able to find one that will work for us. Otherwise, we might have to buy that cable. The crummy part is that the cable can run $15-$30 locally, and as you can see online, it's like a $5 cable.

ok. you check on cable and I'll see you on Wed around 11:30. If I need to pick up a cable I will. Do you think they would have one at Radio Shack? That's about all that's out here. Steve.

Steve, by any chance do you have a USB printer? If you do, you have the cable we need.

I noticed that on my Western Digital external USB drive, the same cable is used. Just thought it might help out someone with external drive, so please check your connection cable from the drive to the PC.

For those of you following this thread- I just got off the phone with Bill, and we are set to meet tomorrow@ 11:30 AM. Hope we have all our ducks in a row.
Thanks for the heads up that the cable is a common one. Bill says it's the same cable that goes from the printer to the computer. He's bringing his lap top and I can go to Rat Shack if I need to.
A six pac of Anchor Steam beer, fresh from SF, chill'n, and a bottle of Na Van for when The Fat Lady Sings(I don't smoke any more). I think we're good to go.Tune in tomorrow. Steve.

Hey, everyone, I'm still here at Steve's (we're having too much fun), but I wanted to give a quick update.
All the video source issues turned out to be the video sources themselves, for one reason or another. We now have the DTV DVR, the Oppo BD83 and the PS3 all putting up beautiful, HD (mostly 1080p) content. We're rocking out to various multi-track audio Steve has. He's got a great collection of various Blu-Rays, DVD-A's, SACD's and the traditional DVD/CD's.
I did get the UMC-1 flashed up to the latest code. If anyone reads this, don't plug the USB cable in while the UMC-1 is still powered on (blue-screened my laptop). I'll give some more updates later.
-Bill

After midnight and I'm just now getting home from taking Bill back to SF. 12+ hours of working with this new machine. At one point we put in the new Star Trek to check a couple of scenes. We could not turn it off. We would just look at each other and just laugh. "Just one more scene." We wound up watching the whole Film. It looked amazing. We flipped back and forth between DIRECT and letting the the UMC-1 add a little processing. Both stunning.
The detail in the sound scape. At one point I turned to Bill and asked, did you hear that guy hitting the keys on his computer way over on the other side of the room? (It was an action Bridge scene). Yea and over on the other side, a woman talking into her com mike. Each clear as a bell. What an amazing afternoon. SACD, DVD-A, another BD. I've never seen my display look so good.(65" Mitts) I've never heard my speakers sound so good.(Rockets 5.1). I don't have the words. Perhaps my new friend Bill will be able to give you some details that will make sense. Steve.

Steve, thanks for the update. Glad you and Bill got it all worked out. Sounds like you're in audio and video nirvana.
Can I ask if you prefer the Oppo doing the video processing or the UMC-1?

Can I ask if you prefer the Oppo doing the video processing or the UMC-1? hemster, there was some light in the room, and we hadn't really tuned the monitor, so take this with a few caveats. We experienced something similar to one of the other forum poster's experiences earlier. We left the BDP83 processing on (not that I know how to turn it off) at all times. We only toggled the UMC-1 between 1080p / 60Hz and Pass-Through. What we think we saw was that the picture was slightly enhanced in both color and quality of edges when we set the UMC-1 to 1080p/60Hz as opposed to Pass-Through. I don't think everyone would agree they'd "like" what we saw, but Steve and I both agreed that we liked it better with the 1080p/60Hz setting than the Pass-Through setting. So, we left it at that.

Well, it's been a couple of days now since Bill's visit and our 12 hour day of setting up the UMC-1, listening to music and checking out Blue Ray. We really had a great time. And just let me say, having never met the man, it could not have gone better. Bill is both very personable and he also is very knowledgeable. He knows his way around that laptop. If it had been up to me, I don't know that I would be up and running yet.
For the last day or two, I've been digging out music and old DVDs and plain old CDs, and what they say is true. " What was old, is now new." I have a birthday coming up this Saturday and my sister in law out in Iowa had sent me a Gift Card to BB. Went in last night and tried to remember what some of the demo or reference DVDs had been in the not to far past. I settled for the BD version of Master&Commander, which I had not seen since I saw it in the theater. Now, I might have stated earlier in this thread, that my viewing area is a 15x15 added on family room on the back of the house. There are times when I wish I had a little more breathing room. What I wouldn't give for at least one 24 ft. wall in my room. But I'll tell you, for the film I watched last night, it couldn't have been better. That feeling of being in a small, tight, cramped space just lept of the screen. You could almost smell the dirty socks in the corner. And the sounds. The creaks and groans of the ship. It just really drew me in.
I guess I'm kind of rambling on about this but what I'm trying to get over, is that for years now I've read what a good home theater experience can be, how envolving it is. Now, finally, after years of working at it, I think I'm there. And it's not just the UMC. It's not just the XPA. But the combination of all the pieces seems to have finally hit just the right mix. My system went from being a just watch TV, maybe rent a netflix film once in a while kind of thing, to a let's see what we can feed this thing to get it jumping. It's got me excited about this hobby again. It's given me something to play with again.("Let's toe that left speaker in just a few more inches. No. No. To much.") Just getting back on these boards and talking with people who have this common interest(before these last couple of days, I don't think I posted more than 4or 5 times here.) I'm back and I'm envolved and I feel good about it. And I think, in a large part, I've got Emotiva to thank for that. No ass kissing, just a fact. Thanks Guys. Steve.

Steve, have a super birthday man! What a way to celebrate with a rocking home theater! So glad to hear you like your gear. And how refreshing and magnanimous to see a forum member help out another... we do on occasion, encounter some bickering here but it's great to see there are real, genuine people here that share their passion of audio/video with others. Now, go wash those socks!

Any one out there seen a Blue Ray disc that just blew them out of the water. I have a couple of things to look at tonight. David Gilmore Concert, looking forward to. I guess they have a GREATEST DISC EVER section on these boards. I guess I'll go look around. Steve.
