For those of you with the larger file failing...if it is saying something like "code failed @ 0X06440" or the like, I have always been able to get it to go through by powering the UMC-1 off and restarting the computer as noted in the instructions. Also, I have found I have better luck by leaving the update running and doing NOTHING else with the computer at the time. I have not had an issue if no other applications are running...just be patient and let it go through the 2-3 minute update. Excellent point. when I run the updater here, I always shut down all other programs since the loader program is bi-directional and if it doesn't recieve confirmation within a specific time period, it thinks the code never made it. So I shut off all the other programs to make sure their is nothing slowing it down.

Lonnie, are you running XP, Vista, or Windows 7? I'm wondering if my issues aren't with Vista (the only Windows box I have immediate access to...)

So those of us that aren't IT people, how do we know if we have a 32 or 64-bit computer? I'll be using the wife's Toshiba laptop to do the update after work tonight.

At least on our system, you can press start, go to Computer and right click on it. Then select properties and it will show you the system properties. Remember though we are running windows 7 though, so not sure about other systems.

Darien, Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Properties. It's different between Vista and XP (and I've not played with 7 very much), but it should tell you in the dialog box that appears which version of OS (32 or 64-bit) you have installed. EDIT: D'oh! squeaked out by Lonnie! I'm installing XP in a VM right now... Hopefully that'll get mt through this, because right now my UMC-1 is a paperweight (attractive with the nlue lights, but a paperweight nonetheless...). I'll also confirm (but am almost certain) that the 32 or 64-bit status is shown in the My Computer properties under XP.

I ran the updater on my XP system and it was successful. Did a full power cycle on the unit afterwards and waited about half a minute before turning it back on again.
-Inputs names and settings were all corrupted including random inputs being made visible. Not a big deal as I just fixed them.
-DTS LFE level was set to -99 db -DTS 2.0 level was set to -0 db which seemed odd
-Setting the LFE crossover used to be possible. Now when attempting to adjust its value, the buttons either do nothing or set it to random values. For example pressing left several times might get you 32hz, 77hz, 101hz, 40hz. There is no reliable way to set the number for me.
-Naming inputs from the remote didn't work. The up/down arrows allowed me to select a letter, but the right/left arrows didn't allow me to select a position (even though the display was flashing to indicated that it received an input). Using the buttons on the front of the unit did work however.
-The velocity sensitive volume control is nice
-Power button light doesn't turn off with unit dimming. Is it possible to just disconnect the led to the switch?

I am receiving a "programme control MCU fail!" error status at step 17 after approximately 2 minutes. I have followed the instructions to the letter including step 18 (retry); I received the same result - error status, with the 2nd update attempt. There are at least 17 steps! I'd be sending mine to Emotiva.

Does the UMC-1 have a system reset / factory default option ? Might be a fast way to reset things after they get garbled from the update ?

Just a quick comment on the firmware loader application. Why is Emo using a 9 year old OS (Win XP) to support their product? This is considered ancient in the computer world. From all the comments I've read so far, most users are living in 2010 and running 64bit operating systems (Windows, Mac OSX and Linux). Please correct if I'm wrong but it seems that XP is the most stable flavor of Windows to accomplish this upgrade?
I'm interested in the UMC-1 and I've been monitoring the forums on this product. I'm all for firmware upgradeable products but we need something that either supports today's market of computers or that is not OS dependent like maybe a Webapp (java?) which talks to the USB ports through a web browser.
This may not be the thread to post this but I thought I'd mention it anyways.
Thanks and I'm hoping this all works out!

Is it possible to just disconnect the led to the switch? I hate to say this, but just do a factory default and this will restore all the functionality. Unfortunately it will wipe clean all your settings, but then everything will work as it should. Sorry, but the power button will always be lit. In previous processors we made everything dim which led to a boat load of problems. Not with the system, but with the users. When all the LEDs go out, people wouldn't know if it was on or off, we got a lot of calls where people were saying, I turned it off but it is still playing (reality was it was not turned off) or we woudl get calls saying. There is something wrong with my unit. Everything works and is playing but I have no display. My reply would always be, please go over and push the dimmer button for me and what do you know. Its fixed!!! So now we always leave the power button lit.

I can't even get online with that laptop but I use it for firmware updates including the two I did to my Onkyo 705 using something that looked like Hyperterminal.

XP is sill far and away the most common operating system on the planet, and 64 bit is gaining, but hardly the norm. www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

Does the UMC-1 have a system reset / factory default option ? Might be a fast way to reset things after they get garbled from the update ? Yes, just go into the setup menu and scroll to the bottom. Its the last option on the page.
