Do you mean these weird issues started after the update, and has it gotten worse with the update? Please clarify. Thanks. They were there before and I was hoping the firmware would fix it. Thanks, I was holding off on installing the FW after reading your feedback, but if it hasn't made things worse I'll give it a go.

You for people without a laptop or using a mac lets try thinking outside the box. Have neighbor or buddy with a windows laptop? Give them a call. Sounds pretty simple to me. I was thinking the same thing. Where there is a will there is a way.

Just to let everybody know I was able to update the controller file on a Mac running XP on VMWare Fusion. Unfortunately, I always get failures with the larger firmware file, I think there might be some security feature stopping the flow of information every 2 min or so, since it stops always around the same time, but not the same code (if that makes sense). I will now try Windows 7 with Parallels 5 to see if that will work...

Just a thought, but would it be possible to post an MD5 checksum so people who download these firmwares can make sure they dont end up with a corrupt copy?

Will the process of updating the UMC-1 be the same for all future upgrades? Or is Emotiva looking at future updates that can be done via the net like Oppo, Denon and latest released Onkyo/Integra units? Bill Thats what I was hoping for. I just ran Cat5e to my theater room for such a thing.

However, when I power cycled the unit my inputs remained garbled and I had to reset defaults and start over again. No real problem, just an annoyance.

why couldn't there be an option for both basic 2ch and all channel stereo? I love listening to my music in all channel stereo mode. When its time for me to have my UMC-1 can I perhaps get this option back I would like to heavily second this. I know there is hot debate over 5-channel, and even how "best" to implement 5-channel, but it seems that having a 5-channel stereo mode is an age-old standard that many people still enjoy today. I also don't think that the standard "stereo" mode should ever be 5-channel. It seems both options should be readily available on any modern processor or AVR. I suer hope this is a option with the XMC if not I will be very very disappointed , I like dolby IIx too but I use 7 channel stereo daily and I never listen to 2 channel anymore but doing it both ways is fine , please do not punish the ones that prefer all channels stereo just because where/may be in the minority this is a very basic function even back when there was only stereo one still had the option to do 4 speakers stereo with the A B speaker switch so please reconsider this decision at lest for the XMC - PLEASE

I just got running my update on my UMC-1. I tried it with my Windows 7 64bit laptop and I couldn't get the computer to recognize the UMC-1, so I pulled out my trusty old XP laptop and downloaded the software onto that system. It installed easily on that system but when I tried to do the update (I followed the directions to the 't'), it came up with an error.
I called and spoke to Nick a few times and he confirmed that this program has a hard time with 64 bit systems. I reloaded the software on my XP laptop per Nick's instructions and it did work. The software loaded up on the UMC-1 in no time flat. Thanks for the tips Nick!
Upon restarting my UMC-1 the Input names were jumbled up. Example: Comcast now said "mast Co" and Aux 1 now said "ux A1". No biggie, I just renamed the inputs.
I then went into the speaker set up settings and noticed that some of the values had changed, ok, several of them did. No big deal, I reset them to where I had them before the update. Curiously, I could not set my rear center speakers to the correct cutoff and set it to two speakers. So, I decided to try the Emo-Q to make sure that would set up correctly.
After running the Emo-Q (white noise volume had definitely lowered through upgrade) the rear speakers were now showing in the speaker set up section. I did go through and change some of the crossovers for my rear speakers. I had to do that when I ran the Emo-Q before I did the upgrade. I noticed that the subs were set at a better volume now that the upgrade was done.
Another thing I noticed when going back through all of the settings on the UMC-1 was that my PS3 which was set as HDMI 1 before the upgrade had moved to HDMI 4 and my Comcast Box that was set on HDMI 2 was now set up on HDMI 5. I reset those when I went through to make sure all the settings were correct.
After making sure everything was set up correctly I popped a Blu ray in my PS3 to see how it worked. I did notice that the pop up window that displays the sound format now showed audio source: none, signal: none and sample rate: none. It did not lock onto the signal from the PS3 like it did before the update. If I pressed a button move through the menus on the PS3, I would get the signal to show and the clicking noise would be heard after it moved 2 or 3 times. Before the update, the little pop up window would show all seven speakers and show a sample rate, now it only shows when the noise is actually coming out of the system. It may be the way I have it set up in the PS3. I don't know. No big deal though. I put in Transformers 2 and the audio format popped up on my screen, it actually locked the sound faster than before. I could hear the fishing weight being dropped into the water where as last night when I played this I could not. So, it did lock on the sound faster.
It sounded really good! Really, really good! I mean really, really, really good! I am really impressed with the sound of this unit. Oh, I turned everything off and then back on 3 times to see if I lost the video settings. They remained every time. Awesome! Thank you so much for the update guys! What a great Pre-pro!

I knew I wasn't the only one with the garbled input names. My ps3 showed the same settings also. What did it set the front speaker crossover to?

Bob,
My front speakers were set to 70 after the Emo-Q, I moved them to 80.

Hey Jeff, Not sure why the settings got changed, but as you said, it is easy to go in an put them where you want. I am very happy to hear you like the way it sounds and works now. This is good news. Enjoy.

I did notice that the pop up window that displays the sound format now showed audio source: none, signal: none and sample rate: none. I saw this once also. However, if you power the unit off using the switch on the back after the update this is not an issue. It also goes away even if you power the unit off and back on after the initial firing up after the update.

For those of us with rackmount and no quick access to the back, any downside to using the circuit breaker to cause the power cycle? (I prewired the USB cable, so that isn't a problem)
And, will all future updates require the same type of reboot?
Thanks, James

For those of you with the larger file failing...if it is saying something like "code failed @ 0X06440" or the like, I have always been able to get it to go through by powering the UMC-1 off and restarting the computer as noted in the instructions.
Also, I have found I have better luck by leaving the update running and doing NOTHING else with the computer at the time. I have not had an issue if no other applications are running...just be patient and let it go through the 2-3 minute update.

Thanks, James A power cycle iwth the circuit breaker isn't the ideal way to do it but it will more than likely be fine and yes, they all need to be power cycled ot reboot.

Lonnie,
Thank you guys for such a great product. I realize that doing these updates is incredibly complicated. Since none of us have the same computer hardware or software running on our systems I don't think anyone can expect things to go perfectly. Oh course, that is what everyone shoots for. I am just glad that I was able to do the update without sending in my unit. I had to do that a couple of times with my last pre-pro and to be able to do the update at home is really convenient. It took me a couple of hours since I had to use two different computers, but a couple of hours is much shorter than several days of waiting for the brains of my system.
I am enjoying my pre-pro. Good thing I have the day off today to really put it through some real world testing in my system.
