Guys with firmware updates that use the printer style usb cable, you must do every step to a "T". Powering Cycles and connecting and disconnecting the usb cabe are very important. Must be done in the order the instructions say. If any instruction is reversed, you will have a problem. I don't think there is any step where you are instructed to remove the USB cable. I know I never did. It took me about 5 tries, but finally it worked. I kept getting that "Send 0 response" whatever error. I just kept clicking start and screaming obsenities at my laptop in frustration. I didn't change anything, it just worked the last time for some reason. I'm keeping mine plugged in and tucked away...for future updates!

Your last point is correct. Lonnie said the "Direct" input is a straight path without bass mgt. Then how do I process multi channel PCM (SACD or DVD-A) via HDMI now since the upgrade is stereo (2 channel) only? The "old stereo" at least played in multi channel and included processing. Any info on this PCM thing? My Onkyo 885 had "multi-channel" show up when it was receiving a PCM signal, so you knew you were getting the hi-resolution audio the Oppo/PS3 was feeding it correctly.

At about 1 am last night I magically got this update to load. In my experience you could print out the pdf and about 90% of the suggestions on here, crumple them up into a big ball of paper, and chuck it right out the window. In the end I had tried this update on 4 different comupters running for completely different os's. By the time I finally got it to work I had spent over 14 hours off and on trying everything from registry tweaks to a complete os reinstall. By the time it finally took my installation procedure was this: 1.) UMC-1 completely removed from cabinet and plugged directly to a wall socket 2.) Completely uninstalled all drivers and software that came with the loader and restarted my vista 32 laptop (which I had to resurrect and reinstall just to get working) 3.) After reboot I reinstalled the loader, and then attached the usb cable, a ten footer which I had been trying with all day(before you say oh there's your problem I tried it on a 3 and a 5 footer too with no luck). 4.) I started up the program and it installed the driver and windows recognized it. 5.) At this point I deviated from the pdf and did not reboot. About 10-15 seconds after the driver finished loading the red x went away and I loaded the firmware file. I then unchecked the UMC1_V102_001 so only the HDMI update would load and then I hit start. I about passed out when it went through and finished loading. A couple notes; at the time my wifi was running on the laptop, all of the default stuff windows loads(such as sidebar, and security center/firewall, etc) was running. I can't remember now, but I might have even had internet explorer running and connected to the emotiva site. Just prior to getting this to work I saw the suggestion to get the updated driver to get it to work on the 64 bit, so I tried that as well. The driver did load and Vista 64 let it through. I restarted, loaded the software, and gave it a try. The HDMI part wouldn't go past .4% complete at best but it wasn't getting the no response error. The connection seemed to be intermittent and I kept getting a connect disconnect chime from windows till the update finally failed. I tried several times with the same result and went back to my laptop, which now loves the unit apparently, and reloaded the hdmi portion again. On the vista 64 I was plugged into a usb on the top of my computer, so that could have been the culprit, but I was way to tired to crawl around behind and plug it into an onboard port, especially when I now had the laptop working. I'm not sure what ended being the deciding factor, whether it was completely disconnecting the umc1 and removing it from my theater cabinet or if it was skipping the reboot, but I finally got it. So, hopefully this will help others who are stuck. For now I'm off to reintegrate the umc back into my theater and see how super this update really is.

Having the USB connect/disconnect could well be lack of power from your top connections.
It may be interesting for folks with problems to try this via powered USB hub - i.e. one with an external power source plugged in.

Mac update: I'm trying to get the update to work via Parallels 5 and Windows 7 32-bit. I updated the drivers to 3.2.1. I've disabled everything I can find in Windows including networking, firewalls, etc. Using a very short (~2') USB cable. Amazingly, I got the firmware update to work (15 minutes of high anxiety!) But no luck with the MCU update after many reboot cycles and retries. Always fails after 2:03 minutes or so of "erasure chip @4." Anyone have any additional ideas? Just so you all know, I borrowed an old PC laptop with XP and got the MCU update to work. Total time with this easy upgrade ~17 hours. ;D

I can't believe I read vinyl and all channel stereo in the same post... I can understand wanting it while you are doing other things around the house but my god. OK, I know this is going to upset a few people here but here goes. If you sit down in your listening area, have the good sense to use vinyl and turn on ALL SPEAKER STEREO, you are nuts, you are the SQ anti-Christ, you deserve to spend eternity listening to MP3's. If you have the nuts to gripe about this, you need to save yourself a ton of money and go out and buy yourself a cheap AVR at Best Buy because that is as good as you need. I will probably be banned and I am fine with that but at least I am making my stand. I understand problems with firmware, sq, pq, and other problems, this is an issue. LISTENING TO PRISTINE VINYL IN ALL CHANNEL STEREO IS AN AUDIOPHILE SIN! Thumbs Up on your thoughts. It destroys the imaging in stereo, but I guess MORE SOUND is more important. I'll watch your back, you watch mine when the Zombies from Night of the Living Dead start showing up!! Weigle2

Need some advice.
My UMC has all the usual bugs which it looks like the software update is doing a good job of correcting. But, I also have two slightly more exotic species....
1) none of my hdmi inputs function w/o placing a layer of vertical stripes across any screen content. I know it is not my cables or resolution settings because it even does it when I just put the osd up....and, it didn't do it the first time I had my stb hooked up to it.
2) I have my stb directly connected to my tv (see #1) with a digital audio out to the UMC. I like to listen to the music channels and usually do it with my tv off. Never been a problem before...but with the UMC when I turn my tv off it then turns my audio from the stb off...even though the stb is still on and the stb audio out is set to digital not hdmi. And, here's the real interesting factor...it doesn't turn the audio off exactly when I turn the set off...it only turns the audio off when the fan has stopped running in the tv.
My question is this...since I have to disconnect my setup and take the UMC in to my office to do the download, do I have a reasonable expectation that these quirks will be remedied...or should I just trade it out? Don't want to be down for a week but also don't want to repeat this process if I can't get these problems solved.

I was able to update it though Win 7 running on a separate BootCamp partition. Had the same problem you describe with VMware. I believe it has to do with the way the USB port is virtulized... Doubt it will work...

I don't think there is any step where you are instructed to remove the USB cable. I'm keeping mine plugged in and tucked away...for future updates! #19. of pdf intructions Once the new code has been successfully updated. Unplug the USB cables.(make sure its at 100%loaded and unplug from umc 1st. And yes, you can also leave it there. Alot of issues you guys are having comes from connecting the usb at the wrongt time...DO NOT PLUG IN USB to umc UNTIL #6 of INSTRUCTIONS..It will not work..and yes, only use USB ports that come straight from the motherboard of your pc(behind your pc not infornt or if using a laptop the port behind it or to the left. Many of these EXTRA usb ports dont have the juice needed for firmware upgrades.

Just tried a Blu-ray in the PS3 and to get 5.1 sound out I had to pick PLIIX. So I guess I lost the HD Audio or is this supposed to be as good?

Windows Vista/7 users...
right click shortcut...
"Run as administrator"
This should help prevent UAC from messing with the USB driver install.

On the update process... I didn't do any unplugging and plugging of the USB cable. I don't think there is real need to restart the computer either. Just flip the switch on the back of the UMC and it will connect. That was on Win 7 Ultimate.
On the actual update.... It seems that the the HDMI acquisition time has increased significantly. Anyone else notice this, or its just me?
thanks N

Death to undervolted USB ports!!! Asus motherboards are very guilty of this and one reason why I switched to Gigabyte. I have an AMD MA790X-UD4P and it's the best motherboard for AMD AM2+/AM3 of this generation. I put it up there with the stuff Oskar Wu was engineering for Abit in the late 90s before he moved to DFI. Fantastic motherboards. As for issues undervolted USB ports can have, my Willem programmer had major issues with those Asus motherboards due to this. As soon as I switch it out for the Gigabyte board above it never had an issue again. By the way anyone needing a Willem programmer and not willing to spend big bucks these guys in Vancouver have a great unit for about $200 bucks. www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4312I love mine and I can JTAG or flash just about anything in existence with it.

Just tried a Blu-ray in the PS3 and to get 5.1 sound out I had to pick PLIIX. So I guess I lost the HD Audio or is this supposed to be as good? I called about this and Nick said the only thing changed was "all channel stereo" is now 2ch stereo and that it should have nothing to do with lossless decoded surround sound. What you should see,per Nick, is MPCM and in direct mode it would be full lossless surround or if you put it in stereo mode then it converts down to L and R channels. Could someone please confirm this? I just gave my CC info so my UMC-1 should be shipping soon but this is a very big deal for me.

I can vouch for the no reboot required on the PC. Basically I had timeout issues with the 2nd HDMI update. I called Lonnie and he and I worked on the problem. We tried the upgrade multiple times with timeout errors at different points in the upgrade.
I want to thank Lonnie for his professional support and patience as we worked on my problem. Lonnie, it's fixed and working. Thanks again!
At one point I got 77% through the upgrade when I had a timeout. That upgrade wiped out my processor and it would no longer boot. With nothing to loose, I kept trying to load the code. FINALLY, after about 15 attempts, the software loaded. I was on my corporate XP Pro laptop with all bells and whistles autoloaded that I can't close. I just kept trying and it finally loaded.
Even a blind squirrel can sometimes find an acorn. :-)
My Input names and crossover points were all wrong, so I did the suggested system reset and all is good now. I did experience a system freeze last night when I switched from a SD to HD source program on my DVR. After a system reset, it hasn't happened again.
I'm happy, she's a keeper.

Since 4 year old receivers with HDMI can do this, I would assume the UMC-1 can....
