I took some photos of how EmoQ has set up my speakers, and as you can see, it shows that I don't have back left and right speakers. When you look at the EQ settings, there's an issue where either they're labeled wrong, or it's applying settings to something that doesn't exist. Also if you look at the crossover, the fronts are set to 250, which I believe is high for my speakers (Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble, 1992) and the surrounds are ERD-1s, which again seems high at 130. Speaker Size and Crossover (notice the backs don't exist)  Surround Right  Back Right  Back Left  Surround Left  Speaker Levels (notice the backs don't exist)  edit: the message board software is really picky, and not very intuitive. |

Actually, I specifically posted it in another thread because this may not be an EmoQ issue but may just be a mis-labeling.
Also, this really isn't a post for everyone else, but a specific "bug report". There isn't a bug report forum (hint) that people could post specific things and I'm honestly a bit tired of wading through 30 pages of stuff just to see what I'm looking for.

your pics look like the results I got. EMO-Q detected my R/L surrounds and didn't detect any surround backs as I don't have any. But yet it applied EQ to my non-existent back and not to my surrounds....

Did you call support and ask them? I've called and was told that there are many variables (room reflections, speakers) and the system is working as intended. Also, was told it's a starting point tool, etc... Not sure if this means it's not being looked at seriously, or the person didn't know what steps are being taken. |

Perhaps a dumb question but reading about all the issues with EmoQ I want to use REW when I get my UMC-1 and set the UMC-1 equalizer manually. Can I use the UMC-1 microphone when using REW or do I need a special microphone?
Speaker distances and crossover point I can figure out myself.

I suspect you could use the supplied microphone, but you won't have the appropriate correction file for it. Better to get a rat shack SPL, for which there are standardized correction files (i.e. not exact for your individual meter, but they'll be in the ballpark.) |

I just got in a Blue Microphone "yeti" which in stereo mode has a very flat response from 20Hz to 20Khz - not tested it yet, but it looks like it should work very well - it is USB and also has a headphone monitor.
I also see the stand mount on the bottom is quite large (3/4 inch?) I think this is what people are talking about when they say standard mount - the one on my Yamaha is the same little one (1/4"?) as on most pocket cameras and fits the tripod I got in advertised for those, I suspect the Emotiva mic is the same.
P.S. The yeti mic is not cheap at about $/€ 140. They have a cheaper model "blue orb" or something but it only goes down to 40Hz, no idea of the response curve.

If you have the right mic and REW on a laptop can you use the UMC test tones and equalizer to make accurate adjustments?? |

I'm going to play with this on my Yamaha when I get a chance (visitor in the house for the next few days, so maybe at the weekend if the house is freee!) and will post something about it no doubt.  But in theory, yes, you can do that. I think a flat, full response mic (or with known curve and correction file) are essential for this. Although with "any mic" you should be able to calibrate speakers relative to each other. |

so really..all you need is a real time analyzer (software based or a real one) with a calibrated mic ??
What freq range are the test tones on the UMC??

Exactly - and some patience and understanding of WTH you are looking at. ;-)
I would hope that as the UMC-1 does subwoofer correction they are full range - or at least speaker channels are full range and sub maybe 20 to 200 or something?

If it is working as intended then it is broke. Look at the original post. He has setting for speakers he doesn't even have and flatline for a surround speaker he has. No way is that working right and no way would a room affect that. And it is not like he is the only one this is happening to. |

That's the way it's supposed to be. If you run 5.1 surround you have L/R Main, Center L/R Surround and Sub. If you run 7.1 You move the surrounds up to the middle and then add two rear surrounds. |

jgeiger...can you post the EQ pages for the front speakers from the Emo-Q run that resulted in the 250 hz x-over setting?
For the reason why, check the thread "Umc Quick Setup", the discussion starting on the 3rd page.

No..your not getting what he's saying...EMO-Q correctly says he has L/R surround speakers and correctly says he has no L/R surround back speakers. The problem is that EMO-Q, after running its routine, is applying equalization to one of the surround back speakers that it said he doesn't have and not applying it to one of surround speakers he does have. So the question is...is it a labeling issue on the screen or is EMO-Q actually applying EQ to a speaker that doesn't exist. |

I have had the same wacky readings, and have posted them here on the forums - check it out. You're preaching to the choir. |
