I tried a dts disc yesterday on a PS3 slim, set to bitstream, all formats checked, and got nothing but loud hiss.

Do I need to go into the PS3 setting and flip it from LPCM (when watching Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD) back to Bitstream when I'm watching something that doesn't use those signals (i.e regular dolby digital & DTS)?

If you have a new ps3(120/250)you should be able to just set to bitstream(umc decodes everything). If you have an older(fat)you should just be able to set lpcm and the ps3 takes care of decoding everything. You do have to set the "manual setting" not auto in set up.I'm pretty sure this is correct, someone can chime in if they have a different observation.

I've got an old fat one (launch date 60GB) model. I did notice that I had to set it to manual and check all available manual options last night when I popped in a blu-ray (law abiding citizen) or it would only decode in 2 channel.

I have the slim and can confirm that it definitely has the 176.4 issue. I also tried to play a DTS CD and got nothing but loud hiss, but this may be a settings issue. I accidently hit the "video" button on the remote during CD playback, and this seemed to cause a freeze-up. I also discovered that the slim doesn't play SACDs . I was excited to finally use the few I have to their full potential, and I didn't realize until tonight that the feature was removed. SOmewhere somehow, you guys are changing the ps3 settings up. I have the fat boy ps3 set up at lpcm and have had no issues. DTS CD, games, blu-ray, SACD, DTS HD_MA, everything. Running everithing through hdmi with latest firmware. My fat ps3 is quiet, never heats up, and have never returned it like the 360. Are they all supposed to play SACD? I've got a later gen 160gig "fat" unit and it doesn't recognize SACD discs, nor does it have the SACD logo on it.

No,most later ps3 don't support sacd, stupid Sony......I would suggest though that an inexpensive oppo does a great job,$75 to $125 used, dvd audio also..

I put in a couple of PS3 games and have my output set to bitstream. Why would the UMC read multiPCM?

It may be possible if the ps3 bitstreams or maybe converts a non standard format it would just show up multi ch.I'm speculating though,do your disc support dd or dts?

When I had my 80 gb it showed multi pcm on the display. The older ps3 chipset cannot bitstream newer codecs. You have to have the ps3 set to lpcm in the manual settings(check boxes) to pass dts hd ma etc.....so you may as well leave it on that setting. In other words, the ps3 is operating as designed and has nothing to do with the umc.

(And I do have all format options checked in the manual setup.) So far, it doesn't work for my dts CD. Is it a PS3 setup issue? Maybe. Is it definitely a PS3 issue and not the UMC? No, but I haven't had time to explore it further.
