3. We are preparing a major SW update for the UMC-1! This update will address all known and reported bugs that we have been able to document to date. We have been working very diligently for several months to verify and confirm all issues discovered internally and reported to us. Where we have verified a problem, we have worked to address it and correct it. I'll try it, but experience has shown since the release of the UMC there has always been a claim with the release of new firmware that all known bugs have been fixed and everything is working perfectly...

Very welcome news! I'll definitely be sending mine to be upgraded. After reading further down, I just wanted to add that for me upgrading wouldn't really be much about enabling 3D, but simply being more up to date, and largely the hardware hdmi bypass (making it so others could watch discs when they wanted, without needing to go into a completely separate room to bother with anything to do it.)

Hi guys, OK, a little more technical detail... The UMC-1 with 3D support is exactly the same as a UMC-1, but we have designed a new video board based on the existing one that incorporates 3D support and hard wire bypass. This was not available on the non 3D version. It had a SW bypass mode that removed all video enhancements, but video still passed through the Torino core. The new UMC-1 3D can bypass the Torino completely. It also can auto detect the 3D stream and switch accordingly. We have also left the SW video bypass mode for those of you that like it, as it gives you OSD, but no image enhancements. Something for everyone. Also, the 3D enabled UMC-1 is not HDMI v1.4; it's still v1.3, but now with 3D capability. This is a very small deal, as they only thing you are really missing is ARC (Audio Return Channel). If that is something you really need, a Toslink cable from the UMC-1 to the display gives you the same functionality. There are several multi, multi, thousand dollar pre-pro's that operate in the same way, so please don't hammer me over this. Someone is going to say that they can't live without CEC, but unless it's a one branded system from end to end, I've never seen it work properly. CEC is still evolving IMO, and in reality a non-issue. Old UMC-1's can be updated by changing the video board and updating the SW. For our customers overseas, we are setting up European direct shipping and support, so you will have a EU based service center to help you with this by the first of the new year. No worries. Now, on to the XMC-1. The XMC-1 is a completely new design and it IS fully HDMI v1.4 compliant (with ARC and CEC). However, it is a digital video platform and does not support analog video, because as as we all know, analog video is nearly DEAD. If you are still hanging on to your old VHS VCR and can't live without analog video support, you can get an adapter to convert to HDMI for about $30.00. We may even sell one, who knows?? But you get the idea, supporting a ton of unused analog video inputs is a dead end. We will manage the HDMI signals, insert OSD, strip audio, and nothing more. The XMC-1 is all about achieving the highest possible audio and video performance. Do no harm. The XMC-1 has color OSD over live video and all of the other cool things we like, and the audio DSP and analog sections have been hot-rodded something fierce. Also, the SW updating is new and the micro- controller that manages the processor is now ARM based and much more powerful and capable.! This is something you will all like very much!! These are many other cool things in the XMC-1, but we are saving these for later release. Hope this helps. Nite all, Big Dan

CEC is ok as long as all of the components in your room talks CEC. A good universal remote control allows for all this and more (delays, macros etc.). Most TVs still have anemic speakers and little bass output. So Audio Return Channel would be if interest so the HT system can be used for TV audio, especially for surround sound. We'll find out at Emofest if the new UMC-1 will have these features. I'm sure it will. Hey Bob... guess again. If you assume... well you know what that means! ;D

One question, what if a customer in Australasia or Asia want to upgrade their UMC-1 to 3D?
Is the only solution to send it back to Emo HQ?
Cheers, Dave.

Thanx Dan for taking the time to post these updates. Many of us were never in doubt that Emo would keep its word and promises of giving us some exciting new products. And, especially that the XMC-1 was going to be something special and worth the wait. We look forward to a new features list as it nears time for production. That will get this forum smoking (more than hemster can) ;D. We wish you & the Emotiva Family continued success. Great company, great people, great products & great service. Just can't ask for more! . Oh, yes we will! ;D BTW, can Dan's 3 or so updates last evening be removed to the News & Updates thread for easy reference. I guarantee you that some of our not so visibly active members, and trolls too, will soon be asking questions that Dan has already answered. Peace Out. ;D ;D

Not everyone who brings up "bugs" is a troll. There are a few true believers who react to even questions with hostility. I love my UMC-1 most of the time but I would ask someone about their expectations before recommending it. Some would rather pay $1500 for a Marantz than to have to put up with the drop-outs. The UMC-1 is a heck of a deal though, especially at the closeout price and considering it's great SQ.

I have never seen anyone who owns UMC-1 and is having any issue whatsoever with it, ever referred to as a troll. That would be just plain stupid and rude too. A troll (as far as I am concerned) comes in 2 flavors: One who does not own a UMC-1 but try to use the issues it has to give Emo a black eye. The other similarly does not own a UMC-1 and likewise uses the issues with the UMC-1 to promote another company's product. For me, a person who does not own or seriously intend to buy one, should show empathy for those experiencing problems and try make corrective recommendations or shut the hell up. Plain & simple!

Thank you Dan. I was seriously thinking the XMC-1 was being dropped because there was no mention of it in the most recent podcast (or I missed it because of the chatter). I think that the "new" UMC-1 is a great development for those interested in 3D and probably needed given that many won't buy a product without 3D. For myself, their is nothing that I really need to see in 3D,

5. Do not spam. Also, we do not tolerate blatant advertising. Telling your buddies about a great product is one thing, but this is not a store front for another brand.[/u] Just to further my rant on who are trolls: Here is rule #5 from the Forum Etiquette. It speaks for itself. Yet, how many times we see some poster recommending the competitor's product over Emo's. Emo does not sell tube amps. So, if a poster recommends a Jolida tube amp, no sweat. But to recommend that someone purchase a Parasound amp as a better amp than say the XPA-5, to me that is trolling. I'm out!

I replaced video board of UMC-1 by myself a few days ago and realized it's a easy work.

Great update, Dan! I am looking forward to the final XMC being "on store shelves"!
I was just looking for something in my safe yesterday and found my 40% off upgrade card...oh boy...that will make it a great deal!

Too bad there are no processors which only care about the audio and let the video stuff (upscaling for example) to TV... UMC-1 3D is not for me, and the fact XMC will want to do things with video (which will inevitably destroy quality) is not very encouraging. Let's hope the passthrough will be able to do 10 bits or 4:4:4.
