Your not using the XPA-5 for your HT? Even so those old C V's are very laid back speakers in the upper frequencies and are considered to be pretty bass heavy by today's standards. There is a parallel array of sandblock resistors inline with that tweeter as well. The sound is very similiar to some of the older Infinity tower speakers from the late 80's. You have an answer for everything...... You will not be defeated. ;D When you have been in the industry for as long as I have.........

Porscheguy, LordOfTheRingsEE just outed you. Apparently you and Chuckienut are his best friends. Ooops almost forgot about the deep love shared by Strindl and him as well. Sometimes I think we take this all a bit too seriously. I don't! ...I take it only for what it truly is; Love at first sight! ;D

"Old Snells?" They are 11 years old....... Its not like they are from the 70's. That box speaker design has been around for almost 20 years now.

My Thiel 3.6's are from 1994 and they still sound great. A good sounding speaker is a good sounding speaker no matter when it was made. Those Thiels are timeless. Still considered to be one of the best. Yeah, by any magazine that Theil advertises in. Just like my old Revel Salon's. Stereophile's "speaker of the year" award winner. What a load........ ;D

Porscheguy, I really really love ntrain42 for his dogmatic stance on so many audio related matters. The truth is after I research whatever he says I realise he definitely has a very good point. So as far as I'm concerend I will not pick a fight with "He who will not be defeated". I'll leave that to his arch rival called ..... BTW. who is "you know who"? Another super hero maybe? Well VisN, you are one of the few..... You would be surprised at how MANY those "few" are. I have an inbox with about 4-500 PM's with plenty of people from just this forum alone who are quite glad I'm here giving advise and adding color to the forum. Just because you and a few select others can't get past some of my "blunt" experiences and opinions with added colorful wit and banter doesn't mean everybody else feels that way.

ntrain42, Welcome back. Why don't you tell everyone your experience and maybe they can better understand where you're coming from. I for one listen to what you have to say and then make up my own mind on whether you're talking "taureau excrement" (pardon my French) or not.

Sometimes I think we take this all a bit too seriously. I agree fully. But it sure is fun when one of the "Three Stooges" makes a point to show how flustered he/they are with my opinion where they make a direct point to try and attack my post(and normally[not always] its done with a serious lack of experience or fundamental knowledge)just because its ME. ;D I personally get that warm fuzzy feeling when I see one of my posts quoted. ;D

ntrain42, Hopefully when it's full time you can get back to us. Here's a place that can settle a few arguments. www.theaudiocritic.com/. If it can't be measured then it ain't there.

Well here is my two cents: Ntrain makes many valid points. I feel much of what he has to say makes a valuable contribution to the knowledge base of this forum. The same for Chuckie and Porscheguy and of course many others. ' The difference, however, is that we all have to realize that unless we are quoting a statistic, what we have to say is AN OPINION. And what we have to say is NOT the last word on the subject, as if our word is the gospel and everyone who disagrees is wrong. That is why we have these forums, because of the opportunity to share opinions and have a constructive dialog going. I find that certain people seem to think that they are THEE expert in a matter and anyone with a different OPINION is wrong and also is subject to ridicule. That is uncalled for. It is not right to insult other members by making derogatory remarks about their equipment, or by calling them names (such as the Three Stooges). We can certainly have heated discussions about why we feel our opinion is correct and since some of us feel very strongly about these convictions, it does get heated. But that still is no excuse for lacking civility or casting insults. These are all opinions we are sharing and we should respect the opinions of others as we would ask that they respect ours.

But the last place I worked for(Ensemble HT) is still around. And I didn't just do "sales". I did physical installs and construction from the ground up on high dollar systems, from pouring concrete right down to programming remotes and automation functions.

WOW This one is getting heated Rickie you are 100% correct. Unless there is clear number or fact that physically shows the UPA is better then the XPA or the other way around, it's just opinions. I have my own opinions on everything. I don't like raw onions, doesn't mean i'll tell you shouldn't like them either. All in all i decided on the XPA-2 and will place it on my bottom shelf so the weight isn't a issue. I like the extra headroom with the XPA-2 and if i decide to purchase different speakers down the road that require more power i'll be well prepared. Thanks for your input guys Matt Kraemer

I have been watching this thread with interest..
Now that the original poster has made a decision I feel that it is appropriate for others to chime in who do not have either amp.
I do not have any Emotiva Amps. That said, I feel that ntrains argument is more then valid. The XPA-2 has a fairly bloated THD+N from about 2khz up. Why? I am not sure. But the from the specs it appears that the UPA-1 should be a better performer especially on speakers with a high sensitivity.
I think some people get too caught up in watts and headroom. The reality is most people rarely push their amp beyong 50 wpc even in the transients with a ~90db speaker.. What I think people want (without knowing) is the power supply from the bigger amp because poorly designed power supplies can sag under heavy load..
The XPA-2 uses a big transformer, but less secondary capacitors. The UPA-1 uses a smaller transformer but more secondary capacitors. Without seeing both under load it is difficult to say which is better. But I am certain both are plenty for the amplifier they drive.
Based on specifications alone, I would choose two UPA-1. That fact that they are 15% cheaper too is just a bonus.
