How does the Outlaw 2200 compare to the UPA-1? I have not heard the Outlaw 2200, but from what I have read it is basically a low output A/B amp that they tacked on a digital amp circuit to handle from 70 to 80 watts up to its max of 200 watts. It has a much smaller transformer and just a fraction of the filter capacitor reserve of the UPA-1... and to top it off, it costs more than the UPA-1. Outlaw has a good reputation, but from what I have seen they do not have the same build quality as the Emo gear and they cost more. If they have a product that fits your need they are worth considering. They may have something that is a better "fit" to your needs than what Emotiva has to offer. They have a good reputation for service. Compared to Emotiva, there prices are keeping them from being strong competition. For example Outlaw's power amps that are close to having the same power as Emotiva UPA-7 and XPA-5 are priced at $1000 and $1700 versus $599 and $709. That price difference for very comparable gear is why you don't often find people on this forum talking about Outlaw amps. They make a good product, but just can't compete with the pricing.

I just happen to stumble on the outlaws today searching forums. At 18lbs i believe, they seem a little under built compared to the UPA-1. Also they look so boring Just wanted to ask and see if any loungers might have a few words on them

Well here is my two cents: Ntrain makes many valid points. I feel much of what he has to say makes a valuable contribution to the knowledge base of this forum. The same for Chuckie and Porscheguy and of course many others. ' The difference, however, is that we all have to realize that unless we are quoting a statistic, what we have to say is AN OPINION. And what we have to say is NOT the last word on the subject, as if our word is the gospel and everyone who disagrees is wrong. That is why we have these forums, because of the opportunity to share opinions and have a constructive dialog going. I find that certain people seem to think that they are THEE expert in a matter and anyone with a different OPINION is wrong and also is subject to ridicule. That is uncalled for. It is not right to insult other members by making derogatory remarks about their equipment, or by calling them names (such as the Three Stooges). We can certainly have heated discussions about why we feel our opinion is correct and since some of us feel very strongly about these convictions, it does get heated. But that still is no excuse for lacking civility or casting insults. These are all opinions we are sharing and we should respect the opinions of others as we would ask that they respect ours. Yeah...no moe Stooge references!

In the end Matt, you should get what you want. As Monku said, a lot of this is perception, a person's personal taste, room, speakers, source material but mostly perception.
Many people have mid priced receivers and are quite pleased with their performance - where others will not because they are fussier and looking for that added nuance, detail and headroom that a big power amp can provide.
There are dozens of reviews here about the XPA-2 and a few about the UPA-1 and all are quite good. There are professional reviews from Secrets and Audioholics which have said some really great things about the XPA-2 - food for thought.
Lastly, there is a difference between "offering" an opinion and "foisting" one on someone. It rankles me to the high heavens when people simply cannot acquiesce. That, my friend is the spoon that stirs the pot.
I know you will make the right choice for you.
Best,
Ed

How does the Outlaw 2200 compare to the UPA-1? Beats me man! * Didn't we tell you already to get a pair of those UPA-1 monoblocks? ...Yes we did you little snake! ;D ______________________ Matt, I'm going to be very frank with you (like I always am): Don't look around, don't look any further, don't try to make life hard on you, and just get those Emotiva UPA-1 Monoblocks! Then I already know you're going to come back right here and say: "Gezz Bob, why didn't I listen to you in the first place?" Get them goddamnit, and if you're not happy, I'll buy them back from you, plus one dollar! Just to add my two cents - I don't necessarily agree that he should get the UPA-1's or the XPA-2's or whatever, but I say whatever it is, make sure it is an Emo. He will NOT be disappointed!

This thread is funny. I haven't laughed so hard at a thread in awhile. I just wanted to add my two cents as a previous owner of Infinity Beta 50s (the step child of the F12s).
These speakers need power. I powered mine with a THX certified AVR for a couple of years before getting a Emo amp. I learned one important lesson, read the speaker specs and pay close attention to the sensitivity. The 8" subs in those towers require alot of power to work. I could not get sufficient bass from my Beta speakers until I used a dedicated amp. Get the XPA-2 and you will not regret it. This is not a knock against the UPA-1, just a recommendation based on experience and the speakers low sensitivity (90.5dB).

Looking at the rest of Revel's towers, the F12's have the highest rating.

Plus they also have that audio sound refinement (on several levels) that his F12s would greatly appreciate! But hey, Thanks for sharing your opinion! P.S. I also agree with you; this is indeed a funny thread. ;D
