Are you using the 7.1 input? I think the regular RCA inputs go through ad conversion for bass management and other processing. With the ad conversion it could still clip the signal if it is strong enough I'm using the the regular "cd" input, but I thought direct mode bypassed all processing with any analog input? At least that was what I was told by Emotiva regarding the first few FW versions. I could try using the 7.1 inputs and see if its still there.

Marvin, I would view all the videos that Emotiva has produced on the UMC-1. They cover installing the FW updates and understanding/using the EmoQ feature. There is a great deal of information in those videos that will make using the UMC-1 more productive. One of the things that get abused is that when EQing your speakers many users attempt to fix the room problem by boosting frequencies. Often this causes distortion because you are driving the amplifier beyond it ability to cleanly provide the power needed. It is usually better to cut the surrounding frequenciy ranges than to boost. Lonnie spends time explaining how EmoQ works and how to interpret what it is really telling you in one of the videos. I can't stress strongly enough how valuable it is to you to view these video aids. It will help you maximize your enjoyment of the UMC-1. It has powerful tools if you know how to use them. I too have been experiencing distortion with boosted frequencies. However, upon using your method, I have no audible distortion. I took my highest boosted frequency (+4) and took every other frequency down 4. Then I lowered my sub -4. This fixed all issues and eq sounds really nice. I did however, lower the 32/64 bands on both my fronts, although my crossover is at 80hz. Does the umc-1 still sum up ur eq of the fronts (as in if 32 is -4, subwoofer also lowers -4 at 32) or is it only using the subwoofer eq now. My subwoofer was pretty flat (roll off after 30 is bad though =() If its only using the sub eq, then good, otherwise, i need to work with those bands. On a side note, anyone familiar with REW, I used a toslink to my umc to produce the sine waves from REW, while using a radio shack spl meter as my mic (with correction values). Is this accurate? I see all this sound card stuff but I can't imagine what I did is wrong.

Well I contacted Emo about my distortion issue and they said it seems like more than FW in my case (since I have an issue with analog sources as well). It will be interesting to see if they can replicate the problem since I only hear it about 10% of the time.

Has it the same distortion problems with Audissey AutoEQ? Why have you decided to switch to UMC1?
