"Could we claim every other processor is outdated because they don't have DIRAC? " So does that make XMC-1 outdated because it doesn't have Dirac

I would like to get the XMC because I have no doubt that it sounds great, my UMC-1 is till sounding great, and it would match all my other stuff. However, I just don't have the fund to buy another processor in a couple of years if I really wanted the latest codecs.

Pre-pros are always on the leading wave of new technology. I've had more pre-pros over the years than any other class of component. It is not going to change. A five year development cycle on a pre-pro is not going to cut it, business wise. There will always be a ton of guys behind the curve and bragging that that's where they want to be. It's a defense mechanism they use to disguise who wears the pants in the house. There will always be a ton of guys that must have the latest technology because they believe that's all that matters and it makes them feel like they wear the pants in the family.

I do wish the XMC1 had Dirac and ATMOS in it already as I hear nothing but glowing reviews and I love me some Emo blue. I am glad everyone has choices...after all thats what makes this stuff fun...along with the friendly arguments Now that we can agree on.

Forget features. Forget ATMOS, Airplay, etc. etc. and forget Audyssey XT32 and Dirac. How do the two processors sound compared to each other? Has anyone other than deewan heard both the XMC-1 and the AV7702 in the same system or even relatively comparable systems? If they sound similar to each other then features will be the deciding factor. If one sounds better it wins. I would rather have 7 speakers with great sound than 11 with good sound, ambience notwithstanding. I realize the absence of Dirac is a disadvantage in the evaluation, but it is what it is.

i will almost guarantee that in a blind test with no room correction you wont be able to tell the iference between the XMC and the 7702

i will almost guarantee that in a blind test with no room correction you wont be able to tell the iference between the XMC and the 7702 I think I mostly agree. I want DIRAC out, because if the pre/pro with the "best room correction" wins...... It's a different discussion. But since nobody is running an XMC-1 with DIRAC... Probably just going by straight decoding, the processors probably sound very very similar.

Cheap AVR's had BlueTooth stremaing before most, if not all processors had Bluetooth streaming. Mid prices AVR's had network connections before or about the same time Marantz processors added that. Denon and Marantz come out with AVR's every year. They come out with processors less frequently. Just based on product cycles, processors are always more outdated than AVR's

I fully understand everyones point of view...but I disagree and it (XMC1) is in fact outdated ...but that is my view on it... have fun guys Here is my last point of view. If a brand new 2016 car released by Audi out performs every other production car currently available, but the new Audi doesn't have the option of heated side-view mirrors do you think it is outdated? You must, since my 2013 Subaru WRX has heated mirrors. Heck, my 2006 had heated mirrors, and that technology was available long before then. BIG DIFFERENCE between out dated an not offering a feature you want/need. I think that is why there is so many people arguing against your statement. ATMOS is an option, not needed or desired by many. If you must have ATMOS, the XMC is not an option for you. It is not outdated. It's not an option for you. i will almost guarantee that in a blind test with no room correction you wont be able to tell the iference between the XMC and the 7702 Where do you live? Because I can arrange such a comparison and you would be the perfect subject to have test the two.

I don't do receivers; too banal! They're for babies who have grown out of their Bose diapers!

I don't do receivers; too banal! I was simply pointing out, processors are not on the cutting edge as you said they were. I agree that processors are almost always a much better quality of build and sound output. But with the faster turnover rate of cheap AVR's, they are in fact more current than higher priced processors.

I like to have the most choice possible in components - preamps, amps, tuners, decoders, cross-overs, etc. Receivers are always a compromise somewhere. And, although pre-pros don't sell in the same quantities as receivers, they are almost always the 'statement' of a manufacturer's line when they do come on scene.

They will do whatever they believe they have to so that they can sell more units. That's what it's all about. Planned obsolescence helps them do just that.

You never know what Emotiva will do as far as future upgrades are concerned. I've had a very good experience with my Anthem AVM 20. I bought the original version 1 when it first came out. Since then it has had many firmware and one hardware (daughterboard) upgrades. If it had HDMI I would still be keeping it. Unfortunately for me a new avm50v is out of my budget, but the XMC-1 has that same type of replaceable board architecture. If they keep updating it in the future, then we'll all be happy campers. One positive note is that they've been very proactive in addressing bugs that have come up.

Some other points of comparison. Whether or not any one of them is a deal breaker or not is more a function of what YOU want and what is important to YOU, the individual user. Because something is or is not important to "ME", insert your name here, doesn't necessarily mean something for another person.
For example:
> The XMC has Dirac, the 7702 does not. When it arrives, and presumably it will sooner or later, is that important enough to make a BIG difference, is it a noce thing to have, or is it not a big deal?
> The 7702 has HDMI 2.0 all the way to the end of the format capabilities at 18Gbps bandwidth and 600MHz clock speed. TO some that is important NOW, to others, it will be important LATER ON, to yet others, it is not relevant. Yes, there is talk of an upgrade, but that will add to the cost and it hasn't been officially stated that it will become available. Given that the "HDMI 1.4 Upgrade" for the UMC-1 was promised but never delivered, some caution here is natural. Even if it IS in the cards, it will add to the cost.
> The 7702 has legacy analog video support, including 4K upscaling. As with the above, if you have legacy analog sources it is important. If you don't it isn't.
> Same for the phono preamp, though that is easily taken care of with an external box for the XMC.
> The 7702 has Atmos AND will be upgradeable to Auro3D. To some that is important, to others, it isn't. However, given that Atmos, at least, is possible without "I have to drill holes in the ceiling and run wires", you have to look at it honestly and not make it depend on in-ceiling speakers, because it isn't. The XMC doesn't have either and an upgrade is unlikely, particularly to the 9.2.4 capability of the Marantz.
> The 7702 has streaming sources and AirPLay built-in and the XMC doesn't. Clearly, this is a push. Anything the 7702 does can be added to an XMC with external boxes that many might already have. This is a "do I want it built-in" or "I can buy/already have a Roku, AppleTV so no big deal" thing. Personal preference.
> The 7702 has a smartphone/tablet control app NOW. The XMC has one that is promised. If the XMC app is delivered this one goes away.
> The 7702 is more flexible in terms of multi-room capability, but that is only important to you, well, if it is important to you. Personal preference and system requirements govern this comparison point. Do you need RS-232 control or Control4? If you do, you do. If you don't who cares.
> All the rest include do you like the way one looks better than the other? Does the display make a difference? Does having WiFi and Bluetooth built in matter to YOU? (If there is no wired internet connection where the SSP is located, it might. If there is, or if you use a wireless to wired "bridge", it makes no difference.) Do you care, or not, about being able to use the SSP to set the ISF calibration?
Of course, at the end of the day it boils down, at least in my own estimation, to two thing. First, pass-through the video on a "do no harm" basis. With the exception of 2160/60p and above, the XMC does that, and the Marantz certainty does it.
Second, and most critically, how does it "sound"? This is a personal thing, governed by many factors including choice of speakers and amps, room conditions and acoustics, type of content preference, and ability to correct for room anomalies using EQ or some other system. A personal decision as I can't wear your ears and vice-versa. Unless you have both units in the same room, with the same program material, using the best possible setup and EQ (Audyssey XT32 Pro for the Marantz and REW or Dirac for the XMC), it is all speculation. And, even when a valid double-blind test is done, what works for you might not work for someone else.
It's a toss-up, and that's what does make this an interesting hobby.
