Personally, I would not worry about it too much. The AV equipment is becoming like computers... If you wait for the latest and greatest you are never going to buy anything.

Hdcp 2.2 is important correct? And maybe at least hdmi 2.0? If not then I can save get a few year old model plus an xpa5 for now. If I don't plan on having a 4k player of any kind for a few years does that make the hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.0 a moot point all together?!

They explain it better than I could: www.audioholics.com/hdtv-formats/hdmi-2.0-hdcp-2.2The article is a little old, while all the technical information are still current, by now there are many AVR with HDMI 2.0/2.0a AND HDCP 2.2. You may also find this interesting, although as with any "the best something" articles you have to take it with a grain of salt: m.thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-receiver/If it can help, I assisted a friend of mine in his search for a new AVR and we settled on a Denon AVR-X1200. It goes for around $600, it has HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, but only basic Audissey.

By the way, the Marantz SR-6010 has it all too: XT32, HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2. But it is still twice the budget you indicated in your original post.
If you want all of the above you will have to buy new, I am afraid.
Considering you want to add an external amp, it may be worth looking at a pre/pro rather than a receiver.
You won't save money probably, but why pay $1,400 for a SR-6010 with 7 amps you are not going to use?

Still more than I originally wanted to spend. I have to do more reading.. lmao. I'm driving myself insane

I am still undecided ?. I'm thinking the denon x4000, or 4100 if I want to try atmos. Also see Onkyo 828 or 809 for only 479$. Unsure if they still have issues like they were with the hdmi boards. I have hard time making decisions. I'm ready to hand someone my credit card and let them figure out what I need. ?

If you're not interested on the newest tech. Buy used. You can get a killer piece of equipment for your price range in the used market.

The only issue with the Onkyo's are that most of their receiver's (828 and 809 included) trigger functions are not global and are tied to the zone 2 or 3 which makes it a pain to use to turn on a seperate amp for the main speakers. But the new Onkyo ONKYO TX-RZ800 looks nice and has a global trigger. Little over your budget $750 at accessories4less. It has a nice 32 bit AKM4458 DAC and supports the basic Atmos and DTS-X 5.1.2. I think it is worth the extra $50 bucks to exceed your budget.

So I got a 4k TV over the weekend. Had a chance to sell my old plasma... Now I guess I better look for an avr with 4k? I'm interested in the marantz 7009 for 899$ from A4less. Only issue is its not hdcp 2.2 Also interested in denon x4200 which was on sale at Fry's yesterday for 899$. The sale is over but they may still give the deal since I know the manager. I don't plan to have a 4k player for a few years. So should the marantz suffice? Is it a better match to Klipsch rf82, soon to be rf7 once I sell these.

Is there any benefit of the marantz 7010 compared to denon x4200 that I am not seeing? Both look to have same specs but the denon is 500$ less

7010 has 7.1 multichannel input-- 4200 does not 7010 processes 2 more channels 7010 has 2 extra power amps 7010 will do 7.1.4 atmos---4200 will only do 7.1.2 or 5.1.4

Why won't it do 5.1.4? It has two more channels and is 9.2 like the marantz 7010.
I must be missing something and don't quite understand the atmos.
As y'all can see I change my mind alot! Lmfao. I went from not wanting atmos to wanting it and 4k. Looking for something that can last for years now.

I'm sticking with the x4200. Going to order from A4less today. All this over analyzing of things is making me nuts. Lol
