I completely regret taking the Roon 14 day trial. The manner in which it delivers local, network and TIDAL sources is remarkable and really seems like a game changer for how we consume music. However, I can't seem to stomach the $119/year price even though I realize software development and the extremely deep metadata integration is expensive. I held off trying Roon for a long while and now I'm screwed. I feel like I just tried an addictive substance.

I ended up trying it. Got the 1 year subscription. Kept loving it more. Now I have a lifetime sub.
This is the most amazing music software EVER.
It plays perfectly with my XMC-1 where sound quality is king. But it also plays over AirPlay to my old Denon in my home office (running Airmotiv monitors!).
Get Roon - it puts iTunes to shame. It puts JRiver to shame.

My setup. Roon on a (pretty powerful) desktop PC. Connected to my Emotiva XMC-1 via HDMI (Yep - I get that beautiful purple connection status icon!). Emotiva connected via HDMI to my 65" TV. I have the HDMI audio output selected on the Roon and I extend my Win 10 to display the Roon control on my TV. Works FANTASTICALLY. Bought a cheap (and effective) remote keypad with a mousepad. My next project is a roon endpoint for the bedroom.

True, but most certainly in the case which I quoted. 10 times better than jriver? In what way?

True, but most certainly in the case which I quoted. 10 times better than jriver? In what way? Well, IMO foobar2000 (with the right choice of addons and config/customizations) is 40 times better than JRiver in EVERY way except in pure terms of sound quality because all bit perfect players sound exactly the same to me through my separate DAC.

Nah... you also have to factor in the extra time and effort spent to get the choice of addons and config/customizations right. I won't discuss all the finest little details here, but to get some rudimentary idea of what's possible maybe you can start by checking out JScript Panel... there's some very nice script examples for it in this forum thread: https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,110516.0.html

FTR, I've been using fooobar2000 on and off since 2006 or so.

This is worth a read: roonlabs.com/howroonworks.htmlFor me it's the combination of ease-of-use, rich meta data functions, stability (compared to UPnP/DLNA), ability for highres inc. DSD, network based architecture that allows for multiple control points, multiple players with one core for your data stored locally and/or on NAS, integration with Tidal, support for both Win, Mac and Linux for core and players, support for Mac, Win, iOS & android for control points plus support for Squeezebox devices, AirPlay, etc.

Its stupidly expensive for what it does, when you consider what Kodi does for video getting high quality metadata from free public sites its hard to justify paying for a subscription. Sure it looks nice but its not for me.

1. I haven't noticed a lot of difference between HDMI and USB, but HDMI may be a little better. 2. I also use the iOS Roon Remotes. I use an iPhone to control Roon and it sends the music to my home office (Denon AVR-4311 (via AirPlay) playing Airmotiv powered speakers). In the "listening room", I'll use the iPad remote, or like the screenshots show, use the PC Roon Controller on the big TV. Why Roon - the metadata is almost perfect. Album reviews, the "Discover" feature. the playback is exactly what I wanted. it sounds amazing wide variety of audiophile-grade endpoints (I happen to think my XMC-1 fits the bill perfectly here) Try reading www.audiophilia.com/reviews/2016/5/26/roon www.techhive.com/article/2923915/home-audio/roon-is-must-have-software-for-hardcore-music-fans.html www.hifi-advice.com/Roon-review-1.htmlI had zero intention of buying it during my trial. I had been using JRiver happily. But Roon is worth it for me.
