And how many quad systems are there now? Some things catch on, others don't. Stereo was hardly a fad, either, we have two ears don't we? It was a simple extension of the mono, as two speakers were generally in play already. But, didn't quad sound eventually evolve into what our current multi-channel systems are today? There were a lot of monaural systems that proceeded stereo. It took some time for stereo to come around. If you can remember some of the early "ping pong" stereo recordings? Your reasoning for 2 ears for stereo, does that mean I need 7.2 ears to listen to my system? If I could get more ears I'd put 'em on! No, the point was that the conceptual jump to stereo for the masses was an easy one to make. It didn't require extra doo-dads, like the 3D does (glasses, in particular). I think the difference is that with stereo you have two point sources for sound (speakers), and with 3D you have just the one. This makes perception of the 3D effect different in that you always know it's a 2D source. Bias is a terrible thing. I'm probably not explaining myself clearly, but that's not unusual. Now, when we get actual 3D sources, I'll sing a different tune. Bring on the holographic displays.

I voted no. My wife and I went to see Avatar in 3D... $30 for tickets for both of us (for a matinee due to the additional $3 each service charge) and she had to sit through a 3 hour movie with her eyes closed because the 3D effects made her nauseous. "He estimated that up to 20 percent of the population — kids and adults — could be affected" www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2010/mar/10/seeing-triple-3d-films-can-cause-dizziness-nausea/www.slate.com/id/2215265/pagenum/all/IMHO, 3-D is more hype and a fad than anthing else. It failed in the 60s, the 70s, and the 80s... why do you think it will succeed now? I don't like my "sound" to give me headaches... why would I want something visual to give me headaches.

It is not a question of if you think 3D is going to "work" or not. Hollywood and the powers that be are going to implement it. Over 15 movies this year alone will be in 3D. LOTR and Star Wars will be re-released in 3D. All major mfg. are making HDTVs, BD players and what-not that will do 3D. Samsung has a new TV that will upconvert 2D into 3D. Panasonics president wrote an interesting open letter in the latest Sound + Vision magazine explaining WHY 3D is coming into play now and why Panasonic is fully into the new technology. it may succeed now, because we have the technology in place to make it succeed. There was a reason Cameron waited till now to do Avatar, even though he had the idea for it many years ago. www.panasonic.com/3d/explore-the-technology.aspxIt's here. Deal with it. That said, the consumer can always choose to watch everything in 2D. No mfg. is making it so you can't. Why might 3D work this time?: www.avrev.com/home-theater-feature-articles/video-related-articles/whats-holding-3d-back.html

If I could get more ears I'd put 'em on!... Misconception, you have the ability to identify the direction and distance of multiple sounds. 2 ears don't matter because you can still tell if a sound comes from behind, in front or even above you. Your brain has the processing power to use time cues from each ear to in effect give you on infinite number of ears. Originally stereo was to be at least 3 speakers (L, R and center) but this was deemed impractical. Also getting 3 channels on a LP was problematic since it only has 2 sides. Stereo doesn't mean 2 but is short for stereophonic (as in stereoscopic for 3D vision) which is to produce a realistic and enveloping 3D sound field. 5.1 and is actually an improved version of 2.0 stereo. So in effect 5.1 (7.1) stereophonic audio is to the audio brain what video's 3D stereoscopic is to our vision center. Just like so called surround sound is now main stream because it is a more natural form of stereophonic sound reproduction of 3D video will do the same for our visual perception.

Almost a 60 to 40 (YES vs. NO)... Many, many people on both sides.... as I said, tough call for Dan and Lonnie... (where is Dan and Lonnie? ? ;D ... Actually, it is very sensible for them to stay away from this thread... On the other hand, they HAVE to address this topic in the VERY near future)

If they want to release it this summer than it won't be 1.4 since that wasn't planned for last year. Are we all willing to wait another year for the XMC just for 1.4? Many if not all of the new 3D bluray players announced will have both 1.4 and 1.3 outputs. We could just route one for the 3D display and another for surround. The XMC does have Ethernet planned so I don't really see the rush to be out with 1.4 first.

Seems like the "release it with HDMI 1.4" folks are pulling away.... I think that makes sense. Well - look at it this way. There is absolutely NO CHANCE that Emo can (or will) release the XMC-1 in less than 3 months after the UMC-1 is generally accepted to be rock solid. I think MOST people in this forum will agree that the UMC-1 is probably 3 months away from being rock solid (yes, yes, I know - there are skeptics who will say NEVER, and others who will say it will be almost there in 10 days...). So, that puts the XMC-1 release approx. into late 3Q/early 4Q 2010. Hmmm.... 4Q 2010, you are still at HDMI 1.3 and your #1 competitor is about to be released (perhaps 1Q 2011) with HDMI 1.4. Not a good position to be in...

The way everyone is talking about how adding HDMI 1.4 is important to keep up with all the new processors coming to market are not mentioning one thing...In the additional time it will take to implement HDMI 1.4, not a single other thing on the XMC-1 will be upgraded in this fast-moving electronics marketplace. Unless, of course, you think that they should scrap whatever plans they currently have and have spent tons of money on to bring to market a completely new and updated machine....only to have it made obsolete because they delayed bringing it to market to upgrade the connection version of HDMI so it wouldn't be obsolete the first time? Am I understanding the thought process of many of you here? Is that what you think is a good idea for Emotiva, or is that what you think is a good idea for you? The current market changes so quickly, that I'm not sure the folks at Emo would put the (if released soon) cutting-edge features of the entire unit on hold to be released for a single feature. Those cutting edge features will not be cutting-edge with the added delay to upgrade the HDMI. Now that is not a good position to be in. I'm just sayin'. P.S. to Spiky No, I'm not missing an eye. I was attempting to make a point with humor about the lack of 3D material that will be available for purchase, or at what price. Do you understand now Spiky?

I said that it should be compliant, but if a 1.3 version would be out in Summer and a 1.4 version would not be out until late Spring 2011, I would have to change my answer. It all depends on the timeframe to deliver it. Doug

The forthcoming Panasonic will have two HDMI outputs, but the Samsung does NOT. It's got to be a cost issue, but they don't even address the issue of connections when the processor, HTiB or AVR between the player and sink is not 1.4. It's going to be an intertesting ride.

But they at least have 7.1 analog RCAs so all is not lost.

Well, Big Dan has spoken.
XMC-1 will be HDMI 1.4 compliant.
(what is equally interesting is that UMC-1 will be upgradeable to HDMI 1.4 - it will surely require a hardware upgrade, so it will have to be done at Emotiva's facilities).

Hopefully you are incorrect on it having to be sent to Emo...for those of us NOT in the continental US there woiuld be too great of a cost! My Rotel RSP1066 has a plug and play module for component and the upgrade from 10 mhz to 100 mhz was three screws and slid out the old module and slide in the new one and put back the three screws.

Although on the surface I wouldn't completely discount this line of thinking, I think it's important to bear in mind that the bleeding-edge, advanced DAC used in the UMC-1 was released in 2003. The Genesis Torino processor, FLI30436, was released in January 2007. The UMC-1 was released in 2010. I wouldn't be looking for 2010 vintage DACs and processors in anything from Emotiva, regardless of release date.
