Given this morning's development (Outlaw abandoning the 997 and moving to the 998 which will be HDMI 1.4 compliant), what should Emotiva do? YES - Make XMC-1 HDMI 1.4 compliant - this will surely push back the release date to 1Q 2011 (??) and probably increase the price a little bit ($100??). NO - Release with current specs - by 3Q 2010 (??) for < $1300 (??) Perhaps, Dan and Lonnie will look at this before coming to a decision... (1. changed to YES and 2. changed to NO - sorry for the confusion .... )

Your poll doesn't make any sense. Yes, they should #1 or #2, or No, they should #1 or #2? I'm feeling like someone went #2 on logic here.

You can use a HDMI 1.4 even if you never buy into 3D. However if 1 to 5 years from now you want 3D then you will have to replace the XMC-1. You can never know with 100% accuracy what you will want several years down the road so it's best to be as future proof as possible. Buying a legacy 1.3 preamp later this year will not cover you and is a setup for disappointment in a couple of years (or less).

I voted no. Only because I think the first version of HDMI 1.4 might probably have bugs and incompatibilities. I would rather have 1.3 now than wait longer on a unknown 1.4. Knowing from past versions of HDMI you might see they will revise it and 1.4B or C will be the one to get. I would like to see how it goes first and have the XMC-1 sooner.

As far as HDMI 1.4. I am not really interested in it if it pushes back product development to 2011 or beyond. If thats the case, then no, keep the XMC-1 with HDMI 1.3. I thought the XMC-1 was supposed to be the UMC-1 with an improved audio section.
XMC-1: HMDI 1.X and released in summer 2010. XMC-2: HDMI 1.X+1 release 2011 or later.
+1
My current DAC is AKM and it sounds really, really good. There is a lot of hype with the ESS, but I have never heard one. IMHO - BB are a little overrated; there are some really good ones, but a lot more average versions that are no better than the Cirrus.

A bigger question is if they do HDMI 1.4, will it just be "3D Pass through", or will they be able to include CEC (NOT on the UMC), the Audio Return Channel and the Ethernet Connection. CEC is a good idea and ARC helps get audio back from widget-based TVs. Ethernet channel isn't a big deal -- I can use a cheap switch for that.
I guess we'll see.

I personally think that they should always just develop and never put a product out because that is the only way they will be able to future proof their processors. The technology changes faster than development of the products is possible. And I wish HDMI would just die already or at least let the current standard take shape and become a solid platform before you bring the next iteration of it out.

Get the XMC-1 out ASAP with the phono preamp so I can start listening to my records (what us old farts call vinyl) again! Decent 3D is down the road quite a few miles. Poll Question: XMC-1 should be HDMI 1.4 compliantYes or No(Very clear to me, but then I take four Focus Factor pills a day)

HDMI Licensing LTD has a terrible track record for each of its major release steps. From what I understand the 1.4 release has to offer, version 1.3 can achieve the same functionality with third party products that are known to be stable and compatible with the current HDMI release. I fear that the 1.4 release will be full of compatibility issues. I think Emotiva would be wise to stick with 1.3 until 1.4 proves its stability/compatibility is as least as good as 1.3. HDMI have proved to be worse than Microsoft when making major release changes... not an enviable track record.
