The Rel Storm is a disco sub A disco sub that only can go down to 77Hz at 105dB's before it hits 10% distortion. ;D ;D ;D (I wasn't aware that REL made pro/disco subs)

I wouldn't doubt that its flat undistorted frequency response in a typical room is good for about 95-100db or a tad more. Its not meant to be a DB monster.

OK, well how does 38Hz at 90dB's and 10% distortion grab you. Is that what you call good performance for a $2000 sub that weighs 66 lbs? Many full range speakers easily beat those figures.
Maybe we could get off REL subs and back to the thread topic of Porscheguy choosing between the SVS and the Rythmik subs.

Maybe we could get off REL subs and back to the thread topic of Porscheguy choosing between the SVS and the Rythmik subs. Ok............where were these measurements taken? Outside or in a SMALL ROOM? .................OUTSIDE is the answer. Different ballgame. And to add, since this is a downfiring compression loaded design, where did he place that mic for the results? He will not get the same results as he would for a front firing sealed sub design with the driver pointed right at the mic. Just like he wont get the same results with a front firing PORTED design that also can skew outside results. Remember that conversation? When you have a mic placed in front of both a driver and one or more PORTS outside #'s tend to be skewed significantly and will give different results over a regular sealed design and a downfiring compression loaded design. So the response of the sub OUTSIDE is going to be different from being INSIDE a small room with natural GAIN. And funny thing, he even stated that sub is suited for small rooms and music. Basically what I stated. It is what it is. A small 10" driver in a small sealed enclosure. In a small room you can expect clean frequency response from 20/25hz-50/60hz around 90-100db. And as for the price of this sub being $2000 and what you get for that money, read my past posts in this thread. I already stated it ain't worth the money even though it really is a good performing sub for small rooms at low to moderate volume levels. But Id take a handful of Kef PSW2500's over it anyday, as they also have the same general design and performance for a small fraction of the price. NEXT...........................................................................

All of this from a former owner of the sub in question who also owned two SVS Ultra's over one summer. ;D ;D ;D
(I'm trying really hard to not bring out the dreaded BS meter.) (The other REL expert said it was a disco sub)

(The other REL expert said it was a disco sub) The BS meter is on you. You have serious HORSEBLINDS on when you look at "stats" and reviews, and consistently fail to see the big picture. This repsonse from you proves that fact as you have nothing constructive to say in rebuttal to my last post................AND YOU KNOW IT.

I am also wondering the same thing as the OP. How come no one ever mentions JL subs. I have a fathom 112 for music and love it. I don't really have a whole lot of other experience with subs as I am just getting into the audio thing but I found the 112 on Agon for 1600 that was a week old. I basically bought it b/c of its reputation.
Now I am looking to replace my HT sub and was looking at the Epik Empire (especially for the price) or SVS but now from this thread maybe I should look at the Rythmik. How do those subs compare with the JL? Again it will be for HT only and my room is pretty small 10'X13'. I've spent a lot of $ on audio gear over the last 2 years and my wife is pretty mad with me so I want to keep this purchase relatively affordable, around $1000 or so.
Thanks

Nothing says DIY better than duct tape! ;D
...however, a can of gloss black spray paint would have given it a more professional look.

i love the diy aspect of the rhythmik. cabinet color, shape and size will please the wife and match my new 'statements sealed' if i ever get them built. as a musician i love the idea of accurate bass. but......when it comes to home theater i guess the 'little boy who wants to shake the house down' comes out in me. hence the desire for the svs extension +output comes into play. i agree with most on the thread. you won't be disappointed with either. i also understand ntrain's love for the rhythmik. very few systems i have heard accurately recreate the low end sound of a steinway 9 ft grand or bosendorfer, especially from a close position. i anticipate the rhythmiks will do that. but to find out i have to build cabinets, veneer, stain and finish first.
oh well.......

Thanks Depending on the condition of the F112, sell it off and buy yourself a pair of 15" rythmiks for what you will probably get for the JL and see what you have been missing. I've never been impressed with the JL subs.

If your going the DIY route, think of how much more the house would shake with 2-3 DS1500 kits compared to a single SVS sub. You wouldn't just have incredibly accurate bass, you would also give your drywall screws something to do.
