I'm curious. I am on the preorder list and obviously been watching the status of the UMC w/ great interest. I have had high hopes for tagging the UMC w/ my recently added XPA-5 and going all separates. But, w/ the majority of the posting I find myself having doubts. I then get confused when I see comments by Lonnie stating they are seeing issues w/ only 1% of the units. In my observations it seems then that 99% of the posts should be positive w/ regards to the UMC, but it truly does not seem that way. So does this mean that mainly disstaisfied customers are posting and those satisfied customers are not posting because they are spending their time enjoying their setup and not on the internet?
I did see comments that people feel there are those that are not making their issues known because they see them brought up on the forum and don't want to add to the comments, but just want to see the issues resolved. Therefore, the 1% stated by Lonnie is inaccurate. If this is the case then I think current owners need to call Emotiva and notify them of their issues. That way Emotiva has a true representation of their product's operation.
I assume many people are like myself and make a lot of our purchasing decisions based on the comments that owners make on these forums. If only those that are dissatisfied are posting, we get a biased view of the UMC's performance and may be misled to its overall perfromance.
I'm not really sure where I wanted to go w/ this, but just wanted to put it out there. I guess my point is: If you are having issues call Emotiva. It has been stated by them that calling is the way to address issues, not posting on the forum. If you are satisfied w/ the UMC's performance and are watching the forum maybe take what little time you have to let us on the outside see that. Otherwise, by the general feeling of the majority of "posts" it seems as if the UMC is disfunctional and not worth the wait that many of us have put forth.
Thanks, Sip

Like any product, especially on a forum, the people with problems will be far more vocal. People without problems are sitting back enjoying their UMC-1

It really is hard to say what the % truly is I know human nature is more people will post about dissatisfaction/problems then post about satisfaction/happy with something and there are more people buying Emo components and not ever posting once about it ether way this forum represents a very small percentage of people buying Emo equipment so it`s not a very reliable way to judge percentage of good or bad IMHO

FYI, I am on the pre-order list and waiting to get my call for the UMC_1. Currently I am running a LMC-1 and when I first set it up I was over whelmed with the sound. I was running an Yamaha RX 1400 . Everyday I listen to my Emo grear I am always hearing something I did not hear before. Surround sound is increditable. In meeting the Emo staff last year at EmoFest 2009 I understood what they are trying to do. I am very satisfied with the products I have and looking forward to the UMC-1 and 10 inch sub when ready.

In general when you go to support forums you tend to see more negative postings than positive ones because as Mischief said people with problems tend to be more vocal.
That said, the UMC-1 does have some bugs in the v5 firmware. I haven't tried v6 yet (will this Friday) so I have no personal experience with that release.
I do believe those that are experiencing issues with v6, and hopefully the source of the problems (be it software or otherwise) can be ironed out. The only worry I have is the audio dropouts, of which I experience occasionally with v5 right now. From what I have been reading they could potentially get worse with v6, but that remains to be seen.
It can be very difficult to gauge the reliability and performance of any given product just by looking at the support forums for it. You have to look at trends, especially if there are several people reporting similar issues.
I'll post my experience with v6 once I've had a chance to test it out.

powerwindow... I think that you can expect that most people that are not having problems with the UMC-1 are not posting. It is simply human nature that if you are upset about something you feel the need to vent. Me for example , I upgraded my UMC-1 on Tuesday and have simply avoided posting anything because of 2 reasons. #1. In the 48hrs since I updated the firmware I have watched 2 Blurays (LOTR Fellowship , LOTR Towers) thats 6 hours of movies with numerous pauses during each. A baseball game and basketball game from my DirectTv DVR, and an episode of "V" and "CSI" both from DVR... throw in a little COD: Modern Warfare 2 and I just haven't had time to post my experiences. ;D #2. There is a certain culture in most forums these days that only negative reports are paid any attention and positive ones are quickly ignored or forgotten.... so whats the point in posting positive reviews. ... 20 people could post that they had very few issues with the UMC-1 and 1 person could post that it blew up the second they turned it on after the update... which one would you pay attention to?

There are also those that bought the UMC-1 and returned it, and those that avoided the UMC-1 altogether (myself included).

There are also people in the park outside my apartment, but so far, I've paid them no mind.
I'm totally kidding around with this comment, I just thought it sounded funny.

It is a fact that you will find disgruntled people post much more often than happy customers. I have noticed that an unhappy person tends to post over and over again about their being unhappy about something.
I have also noted, over the past couple of days, that the satisfied owners who posted they were having no problems got attacked for daring to say they were happy with the upgrade. This is nothing new, as I have received many PMs from Lounge members who have told me they have quit posting positive reports on the forum because they did not like being attacked by those unhappy Lounge members. They generally said it was too stressful having to defend themselves for sharing their honest opinions. A few have left the Lounge because of this.
I frequently post on the Lounge and share all my findings, positive and negative. Most of my findings with Emotiva gear are very positive and every time I make a positive post I get accused of being a "fanboy". Believe me, there are many Lounge members who are very happy with their UMC-1.
Before I found Emotiva I used to visit quite a few A/V forums and found that every brand of equipment got ripped when they introduced new products. In the early stages of the product's life cycle the vast majority of those posting were complaining -- very few positive posts were made early on. This makes it extremely difficult to judge the quality of any piece of gear during the early stages of its introduction.
I have been a customer of Emotiva for a little over 2 years now and I have to say that I am very happy with every purchase I have made from them. Any time I have had a problem, Emotiva responded quickly and resolved the problems to my total satisfaction. Emotiva has very high quality products with very low defects ratios and they have the best, most responsive Customer Support I have seen during my 45 years in this hobby.
To me, the most important thing you need to know is that Emotiva will bend over backward to make you are happy with your purchase. They offer a performance and quality level you will not find from any other vendor that is even remotely close to the same price.
My brother and I both own the UMC-1 and are extremely happy with its performance. Is it perfect? NO, but it is an exceptionally flexible, extremely customizable processor that has the best sound quality I have heard in any like product priced under $3000. Based on my history with Emotiva, I am confident that they will fix all the issues people are finding... and to me that is what is most important.

RR - I have found your posts to be very informative - please keep posting.... Question - did you do the upgrade to v6? If and when you do, can you please post your comments? I am one of those people who purchased both the USP-1 and the UMC-1. Emotiva will be sending those of us that purchased both units a special "Fix Package" that will contain the new V6 FW, a new aluminum remote control with revised IR codes, and the "Front Panel" software to allow the revised remote control to function with the UMC-1 without also messing with the USP-1's functions. The V6 FW and the optimized Front Panel software will come on a single disc from which we will perform the upgrade. I am waiting for FEDX to deliver the Fix Package. Therefore, I have not yet performed the upgrade to V6. When I do get the package and upgrade my UMC-1 I will post my experiences to the Lounge. I am anxious to use the USP/UMC combo as an integrated unit -- giving me the best of both the analog and digital world. I love playing my CDs (HDCD particularly) through the USP-1. It is a sonic adventure you don't want to miss. Throw in a world-class phono stage and an exceptional headphone amp and you cover the only major omissions to the UMC-1. Plus the USP-1 has a HT bypass switch. I am in A/V heaven with the UMC/USP combo. I look forward to being able to combine the functionality of both units with the "Fix Package". Stay tuned... ;D ;D ;D

RoadRunner, Thanks for the update on the "Fix Package", I wasn't aware Emotiva was about to send it out this soon. Having both the USP-1 & UMC-1, I look forward to the new remote.

Great post roadrunner,
That's exactly the reason I payed for my unit today. I don't expect it to be perfect and I'm sure I''ll run into a few issues, but their willingness to go above and beyond what the majority of other companies do makes all the difference to me. It also doesn't hurt that they basically have no competition in that price range. I've had my moments of cold feet and went looking for another processor and my second choice is the Integra 40.1 which comes in at around $1800 Can. Like most people, money is always a concern so it makes it very hard to justify.

I'm one of the guys who posted a "positive" note. emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=preamps&action=display&thread=10890&page=1 While the vast majority of comments reflected thoughts from folks who appreciated the information (I posted a list of my equipment in order to provide a frame of reference for what my UMC-1 is working OK with), there were a few of the sort of exceptions that have been mentioned in this thread. While I can certainly understand people being frustrated with their purchases not meeting their expectations, I find it odd that reports of working units are sometimes met with dissatisfaction, as though a working unit somehow diminishes their complaint about their unit. This forum can be a pretty weird place sometimes.

My check in for the UMC-1 went out today as well.
I went through all the posts, read the spreadsheet with the bug reports, noting the bugs the posters and the associated equipment.
After considering everything I made my choice, and if it's really not up to snuff, I can return the unit.

This forum can be a pretty weird place sometimes. Man, I do not even know how to begin to emphasize my agreement with this statement. You say something nice, or good, or helpful, and you will, inevitably piss someone off.
