OK... I asked, I Got... I'm calling the Western Regional for Onkyo this AM and gona *bleep*!!!! I will admit when I'm incorrect, but even with the full program, I'm close within a few dollars, but understand that margins are so 'tight' to begin with, that its almost impossible to make a living! So LORD, I appreciate your info. ( I looked everywhere EXCEPT Amazon) DUH!!!

Denon with the XPA-5 would be my selection. BTW -- Denon is great to work with, like EMO also. Just my 2 Cents.

Like you were mad at me, and you simply didn't believe me, that I was full of it! And now, I read this one as sort of "panic on the reverse mode"! ...You can call the cops, the CIA, the FBI, the departmemt of Labour, the president of the United States of America!; as far as I'm concerned, you lost your cool before! ...But that's OK, I'm cool with it! Now, slowly but surely, simply get it back! Regain it with confidence and reassurance. ...And then, you and I can start all over again from the same page! The page of Peace, Freedom, Respect, Equality, Love, and Justice!

Here was my point. The Onkyo doesnt seem to show its muscle when 5 + channels are driven. I know there is a big debate over how they measure and how it is not a real time measurement, but Im still not convinced. The Integra clearly skunks the 5008 in these tests. Its so lopsided one can only wonder if something is "wrong" with these two bench readings. Onkyo 5008 HT Labs Measures Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads: 0.1% distortion at 79.1 watts 1% distortion at 95.5 watts Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads: 0.1% distortion at 78.7 watts 1% distortion at 94.6 watts Analog frequency response in Pure Direct mode: –0.08 dB at 10 Hz –0.03 dB at 20 Hz –0.06 dB at 20 kHz –2.68 dB at 50 kHz Integra 9.9: Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads: 0.1% distortion at 158.3 watts 1% distortion at 180.5 watts Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads: 0.1% distortion at 137.7 watts 1% distortion at 158.1 watts Analog frequency response in Direct mode: –0.07 dB at 10 Hz –0.02 dB at 20 Hz +0.06 dB at 20 kHz –2.50 dB at 50 kHz The problem here is your testing an Integra (9.9) which is basically an Onkyo 906 7 channel AVR, to a 9 channel unit. Not apples to apples. Find a test for an Integra 80.2 if you could, thats the current model. Remember too, for HT you rarely if ever have all channels driven at once. There was an article on HTS that showed that high dynamic movie content rarely pushed more than 2-3 channels hard in any one scene at any one time. But I myself wonder why the 5008 power numbers are down a bit from previous gen models because you are using the same PS/output board from the older units but now it has be reconfigured and tweaked for 9 channels instead of 7. I'll try and do a search on the AVS, I know there is a gentleman who tore into a 5008 and took alot of pics. Im very curious to see the amp section output boards........ Yeah I dont know. Its hard to believe that two extra channels would exactly cut the power in half on the 5008 even when just driving 5 channels. I figured the amp would obviously produce more power with 5 channels than 7, but as with many other receivers benched the 5008 does produce a 80 watts whether 5 or 7 channels. Heck, maybe it has something to do with the way Onkyo designed it. Like I had mentioned earlier the amp in that monster should deliver an honest 100+ watts X 5. And yes you are right, most movies will not have content that would deliver a constant signal across all channels, but music content would when running all channel stereo and I am a big fan of the soundstage I get with it. Really the bottom for me is that it is discouraging that the 5008 would show such low numbers at 5 channels. I have a basic 5.1 setup. I dont even intend on trying a 7.1 for some time. Having said that I have a pretty efficient setup when it comes to speakers, but at the same time I have 4 - 15" woofers to feed with my receiver. I guess I just have a problem spending so much money on a receiver that is either underachieving or isnt getting a fair shake on what it is capable of. Shoot I have never even messed with Audyssey on anything. I have always left everything flat and it has been that way for 25+ years for me. No matter what I end up with I am going to have a lot to learn with all the new sound formats, Audyssey and all the other crap in this new age of AVR's.

Hammerhead, good post above! 1. Audyssey MultEQ XT32, with Audyssey Sub EQ HT, with Audyssey DSX, with Audyssey Dynamic EQ & Volume; is the REAL DEAL! 2. That Onkyo TX-NR5008 is the REAL DEAL! 3. We are living in the year 2011, and it's REAL! 4. No matter how you cut it, you can't escape the REALITY! 5. ...Unless of course you decide to live blindfolded!

I believe what he is saying too, I just don't think he knows the Integra product well, or well enough to set it up correctly and use it within its limits. Go to the AVS or HTS or wherever, you can find countless articles on people overheating and shutting down their Denon/Marantz/Pioneer/Onkyo AVRs etc in one form or another, 9 out of 10 times its from user abuse/stupidity. I've never shut down any reciever driving even low sensitivity 4 ohm loads when set up correctly. I shut down some receivers simply because my speakers with a low sensitivity of 84.5 db and with an impedance of 4 ohms, lus my center speaker with a very wide dip down to 2.7 Ohms, plus my two surrounds (I was only using two at that time) at also 4 Ohms impedance, plus the receiver pushing the 1 o'clock on the volume level, plus all my speakers set to full range, plus at 200 watts (true RMS watts) into 4 Ohms (and less) were getting a heck of a ride! ...So was I! ;D * The fan came on first, and then the receiver (RX-V2092; 44 pounds, big EI core transformer, two 71 Volts with 22,000 uF capacitance each regulator cap) simply shut totally down! Nada! I then put my hand on the top cover and it was HOT! But half an hour later or so, I was back in business and still trying to push it even further! ;D And I did too! But this time I used one sub, for the LFE, the center channel, and the two surrounds (actually four, with the two Front Effect speakers; now called the Front Presence Height speakers. The room was about 26 feet by 24 feet by 8 feet and open to three more rooms! The single sub has one 15" driver. And at my listening position with a Rat Shack meter (about 15 feet from the front speakers and sub) I was measuring 118 dBs from some DVDs! ;D I tried EVERYTHING; all speakers running Full Range with the Sub only for the LFE channel, only my two front mains set at Full Range and the other ones crossed at 90 Hz, all of them crossed at 90 Hz, EVERYTHING... I was experimenting with the limits of my setup, as I always do in life with EVERYTHING! ;D I guess I can say that I learned a lot from personal experience! And I did blew few tweeters and burn some subwoofer amps in my days! ;D But way before that I was much worse with Graphic Equalizers and Flaghip receivers! ;D LOUD is an understatement! Cops were on the stand by! Neighbours can hear me a mile away! Lots of booze too! And few (lots) of other things too...
I got so many stories in my backyard you wouldn't believe it! ;D You gotta do what you gotta do! Or ain't worth living it to the fullest!
But now I am much older (55 goin' 56) and I kind of cooled off a bit! ;D ...But the kid in me is always there and always will be! ;DI luv my hobby with deep stubbornness and an insatiable passion! ;D I wanna die being blown away! Radically! ;D N8DOGG? ;D HaHa. That is funny right there! Hey I need a couple of neighbors like you! Sounds like good times. I feel for the folks and their power source trying to drive sub 90db speakers, especially @ 4 ohms. I have a buddy that kept shutting down his old "latest greatest" Sony STR-DN1000 (non ES) running some 4 ohm Polks. He finally gave up and bought a different AVR. That Sony made its way to my downstairs HT setup (even though I hate Sony with a passion) which consists of just bookshelf sized speaks and does a pretty fair job at an honest 50 watts X all channels. I guess it was worth $150.

Ever think about a mint condition Onkyo 905/906 or Integra 9.8/9.9? You can get em in mint condition on the Agon in the $800 range, many times with em still having a portion of their warranty remaining. Killer AVR, its why I kept my 906. The only downside is a 1.3 HDMI switcher if you plan on doing 3d(though you can bypass the video portion, and alot of 3d blu ray players have dual HDMI outputs as well). Im not gonna get a 3d pj for another 2-3 years(basically I only use projectors in my house, so Im waiting till the 3D pj's mature and come down in price to reasonable levels)or worry about a processor/AVR that has HDMI 1.4 until the format and products become mainstream. A heads up though, some people are reporting that on some 1.3 HDMI AVRs they will pass a 1.4 signal using the passthrough function just fine. Its hit or miss here though I guess.

Oh yeah, that would make things way too easy. I really wish I didnt need 1.4...alas, I just bought a Samsung 7000 series a month or so ago that is 3D and I dont want to spend money and have handshake or format issues with a "new" or used 1.3 AVR. Im not one for updating unless I just have to and in this instance, I have to. Tried firing up Shrek 4 in 3D for some friends kids the other night and it didnt even offer a basic 5.1 for sound. I think the minimal was DTS or some other format which my old 3600 doesnt even have. What was weird was that it did offer basic 5.1 in every other language except English!! At that point I knew a new AVR was a must. Although I have never been a fan of EQ's I am looking forward to trying out Audyssey and all these new sound formats that _____ the old basic 5.1

That's the inside of the Onkyo TX-NR905 receiver (the 906 looks the exact same): * The 4th transformer is a very small one (you can't see it), and it's for the Analog Audio circuit board I believe. {It's a the lower right bottom part, under those yellow and white wires, about 4 inches from the rear.} The 905, 906, 5007 and 5008 all have 4 transformers, but the caps in the 5007 and 5008 are 22,000 uF or microfarad and 75 Volts rating. Also, many people don't realise that in addition to the 14 power transistors (Toshiba made) that you can easily see on top, there are an additional 14 more complementary ones that you cannot see at the bottom of the heatsink! That makes 4 per channel. I know for a fact; I opened several Onkyo receivers (805, 876, 906, 5008) and I inspected them scrutinously all over their internals! ...I always do with ALL my electronics! No other receivers that I know of has that well organised interior and with so many quality parts. I'm talking about receivers that retail for $3,000 or less. The Rotel 1067 looks nice too inside. So is the Yamaha RX-Z11, but that one retails for $5,500. And the Denon AVR-5308, 5805, 4806, 4802, 4800, and few more older ones... Marantz SR-18EX, 9600, Pioneer Elite SC-09TX, etc. But for today's receivers that are now computers, the Onkyos are still built with Audio as a mission. Digital though, not analog. ...And the Marantzs too, and the Yammys too, and the DENONS, ands the Elites, and even the Sonys, ... HDMI and Ethernet and USB and i-Pod and i-Pad and i-Apple and Internet and "steam & stream" and GUI and all that Jazz make our receivers now computers with constant firmware updates! Tomorrow, they won't have transformers anymore, they will be powered by DSP chips too!

LORD... I'm not pissed off with you, NO... I't has nothing to do with that, The regional for Onkyo and I are 'friends'... I just Hate it when I'm told one thing and the person I 'respect' for saying their being honest with me obviously isn't! (I was standing up on HIS behalf) Now there are No such things as 'sacred cows' in this business any more, but at least I can still make something off of Denon still! Most clients do not 'eat, breathe and sleep' this stuff as obviously the majority of people on this or any other fourm do. If I take the time to educate the client about differences between manufactures and models etc., My point is manufactures Can't ask me to RESPECT their margin in the retail enviorment if their just going to look the other way and NOT enforce the same restrictions they place on 'US' and not ask the on line dealers to do the same. I should know better, manufactures have always talked out of BOTH sides of their mouths. Nothing has changed in my 38 years of doing this.

Az, if you were not asking me the prices with a 'firm grip' before, cool man! ...But it did sound that way though! Now, I've been in this business for a very long time (as a lover first and a very wise guy!), and several of my friends are Audio dealers from all over; so I know more than the regular customers. And I know representatives of the manufacturers from some companies and their technical staff , and much much more... So I'm familar with all type of prices and all the cuts around! Plus on the Internet I'm getting the hang of it now, and I can read people much better than I used too. Many Audio dealers are around and they earn their living. My living is more than that, it's the ultimate truth without any boundaries, and it has no cost and no financial gain. It's a free service that I provide and I help to sell products that I believe are the vest value out there for the PEOPLE! I make enemies, but I make TONS of friends! My friends are my gain! This is what I do! This is what feeds me! Perhaps I'm goin' too far, but at least you get my point. Some people hate me with a passion because they think I'm an Onkyo fan, or some sort of Onkyo dealer! I recommended as many Marantz, Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer Elite, Rotel, than Onkyo products! I'm NOT one way, I'm ALL the ways! I got beat up, banned, got hatred PMS, death treats, and all that Jazz; but I also got thousands of thanks from happy people that I helped with all my heart and full energy! Many Audio/Video dealers usually hate me very deeply! ...Except for my friends of course! Soooooooo, next time you ask me for a question or two, be nice with me; use polite words, a calm tone, and respect what I said! That's all, that ain't asking for too much right? I'm cool now; I said what your post above just told my heart what to say! ...And your original post in which you asked me the proof of my saying regarding the prices, was not in the best tone of voice! When people use the BS word with me, I've got to step back and reflect! And I did, and I showed you how honest I was, and there was no reason at all for you to have acted the way you did! You didn't even apologize to me! You simply built your own ego even further! And I did give you a chance to redeem yourself, but you took another direction! ~ We are all sensitive human beings, and sometimes our words are what we truly are, no? This small interlude is now closed! We both did the talk and we now understand each other much better, vary good! Let's have a great day now! Bob

Yes, the two 90mm fans are right under the two adjacent transformers, in their own metal casings (you can clearly see the top grey boxes under those two additional transformers up front). If you go to AREA DVD, a German Audio/Video site, they have tons of great pictures where you can see them better. And there are other sites too.

Thanks, that's a great internal picture! * The power amp section takes at least 3/4 of the full large sized interior! This thing is almost 8 inches tall, and it is more than 18 inches deep! ** And it is the 5007 (it doesn't have XT32)!

They had a video there that showed the fans right where you said they were and appeared to push the air out the side of the box. I have to say the latest models from Onk are really pieces of artwork. Heck Im not certain if this behemoth will fit in my rack, much less if my 40-50 lb glass shelves can support it!

Buy a small Marantz receiver then; they are only 15" deep, and some weight less than 30 pounds! ;D * Heck, you can even get one at 19 pounds! It should fit perfectly on your glass shelf! Pictures?

Gotta give a haha! on that one even as I respect the Marantz heritage and history in great equipment. With McIntosh, Marantz and Denon under the same roof, I just dont see Marantz stepping above Denon in the AVR sector even in the future...but hey, I have been wrong before. I actually do have a photo of my rack from 2003. The new Receiver will prob have to go on top shelf. Edit: Maybe not! Just checked the size difference and believe it or not my old Denon is 1.25" longer in depth. The height and width is around 1/2 inch difference between the two.

Lord, the 905/906 uses 4 output devices per channel as you stated(7 amp channels in total). But I think the 5007/5008 uses 2 slightly larger output devices per channel(9 total) instead of 4 smaller ones. To cram in 2 extra channels while using the same PS ratings would probably eqaute to a bit less power per channel in rms power assuming all channels driven. I gotta get my hands on a 5007/5008 real soon so I can pull one apart. Though thanks for pulling those pics. Great to show how well laid out and built the top Onkyo model is.

Yeah, the 5007,5008 has some tall caps. You wouldnt know they were that tall with the common photos I have seen. I wonder if those caps are 11,000 Fu each or 22,000 Fu each. Since the I just read the XPA-5 has 66000 Fu total Im guessing the 5008 has just 22000Fu total.
