Another case where the "director's preference" is not the best choice. I guess I'll be messing with the color balance. Exactly.

So sad...I have read multi reviews that the first film has a sharper image, but a teal color cast to the whole Fellowship of the Ring. (Screenshot: Someone blue it!) Watch for a better color corrected version next year! I stop reading all this bull a long time ago! The real proof is in the pudding, at home! And the main question is: Are you happy? -> The further you deviate from that, the deeper and hotter you boil in that big bowl for the cannibals!

I wasn't planning on getting this as I have the TE version, thus I also have not paid any attention to the contents/differences with this release. I broke down and picked it up yesterday, but now that I've read about the color changes I'm reluctant to open them as the reviews have been mixed. At the very least, thedigitalbits has a favorable review from Bill Hunt. www.thedigitalbits.com/reviewshd/bdreviews061411.htmlDon't worry for a bit my friend, this set is excellent! * Don't read too much into what people are saying on the Internet, trust your own LOTREE; Bob!

Received my trilogy pack today and looking forward to spinning these movies this long 3 day weekend. Nice looking package hein Laurence? I particularly like the black blu-ray disc cases. I wondered how 5 discs would fit into one case, very minimalistic for 15 total. As for the video, it looks quite nice on my Panasonic plasma through an Oppo BDP-93.

I normally don't listen to web reviews and was just posting my thoughts at the time . This is just a quadruple dip for me, so that's really what made me cautious more than anything as I'm a bit short on $$ right now. I actually opened it shortly after that post and have been enjoying the release.

Well I just finished watching all three movies. I've not seen the Extended Editions until now, so there was plenty of extra footage that I had not seen, like seeing the movies for the first time, well not quite the first time. Quite pleased with these blu-rays all-in-all.

To those that have bought the EE BD set...what is the final verdict? IS the new color timing a disaster, or is it ok? Also, from the screenshot, it looks like it's super hyped and a not too subtle change...what do you all think? Thanks. -Dave

Dave, I didn't know about what you call the "new color timing" until just reading your post. I thought the video was what I had expected from a blu-ray, well done.

All by itself it is almost impeccable. Picture is grandiose, and the Audio is fabulous! {It is only when you start comparing and reading other's views that it totally blurs your own!}

Well Laurence, I can see now that you don't frequent the same places as I do! ;D And what places might those be? ;D Pretty much all the major places with the most well known Blu-ray reviewers in the business. And from all across this planet! I'm sure you already know few of them. I would feel stupid to even mention some... But I don't have to, because you have me right here! ;D

I have only finished the first film so far, and I do not own the DVD versions. Even so, I just saw this thread and thought I would add my own opinions to the mix.
First off, I had somehow missed the discussions about the color differences between this release and the previous ones, but after borrowing a friend's DVD copy, the differences are there and very noticeable in some scenes.
With that said, did it bother me? No, not really. I am not even sure which I prefer, to be honest, as some scenes seem to look better with the new color balance while others do not. YMMV.
Here comes the part which likely holds somewhat more weight (for me, at least) especially given what forums we are on. To me, the first film in this set (the only one I have viewed so far) has one of the more impressive audio tracks for a Blu-ray release. I had to finish disk 2 using headphones due to apartment quiet hours, and even then, I found the 2-channel track to be excellent, even 3-dimensional despite it being stereo.
Now, I have not spent much time with the DVD release, as previously stated, but the Blu-ray release, at least, really pulled me in with the audio. Again, YMMV, but this was what I noticed most after I popped the disk in.
My one major complaint? The movies are still split over two disks each. There is no technical reason for this, but they did it anyway. For such long movies, it's not a huge deal, but it irks me a bit.
Overall, I found it to be a good buy.

Here's my own take: I own ALL LOTR versions (on DVD & Blu-ray); 48 discs total, perhaps more... And for me it is part of a totality! __________________________ Spork, LOTR EE on Blu-ray; all three films have exceptionally awesome sound! At Reference volume level, it is a grandiose treat for the auditory sense, and soul as well! >>> Now, it is TRULY BENEFICIAL to have each film on two discs! That way you have the very BEST & highest bit rate for both Picture & Audio! This is a fact! ...If it would have been in just one disc per movie, you'll be missing some! And this from someone who knows a thing or two about LOTR! _________ *** Now, I'll be patiently waiting for the next incarnation! ...On 3D at a true 5K, and true 48fps! ...Like the upcoming "The Hobbit". Year 2014!
