I broke down a few minutes ago, and put black electrical tape over my power buttons. Much much better! I can't believe I didn't do this a long time ago. We'll see how it looks during the day tomorrow, but under the living room lights they just look like black buttons now. I hate having to do that, but it's a lot better now. I don't have a XDA but for my amps/UMC this what I have done I bought a roll of opaque plastic window film, cut 2 pieces the size of the display window on the amp with a flap that hangs down over the power button. I stuck the 2 pieces together and then added several more pieces on the power button flap and attached it to the display window - it is naturally clingy so no tape residue. The lights still shows through but it is much more subdued and not distracting at all at night while watching movies. This doesn't work for the USP as I can't cover the halo but for the amps it works and keeps the complaints from the wife to a minimum. The pic is exaggerated because of the exposure time but it is much softer than what is show in the pic. During the day you can hardly tell the covering is in place, just sort of blends in, not the most elegant solution but it works and is better than tape

So you basically cover up the whole faceplate with the cotton strips? They are attached to the wood frame, not the components themselves (amps, etc.) You simply stick the smal sticker magnets on top and bottom of the wood frame from your audio rack, and just cut the right size of light black cotton strip (from a fabric store), and stick the other matching sticker magnets on the fabric itself, and voila! But I edited my above posts to show you the type of decorative stickers you can use, as they come in all sizes and colors and shapes to perfectly cover any bright light that is annoying when watching a movie. They peel off easily without leaving any residue. Or you can cut your own from a mag and apply carpet tape behind it (it's a two-side tape that is residue-less). So many possibilities, but please, don't use electrical tape, or scotch tape, or duct tape! Just go to the dollar store to buy the sheet of stickers of your preference. It's only one dollar. Or create like I did your own black cotton fabrics (from a fabric store) and using magnetic stickers (from a sheet, again at the One Dollar store), and those magnetic stickers are great on wood, fabrics, metal, or anything else. {When you go to a fabric store, they have several type of fabrics from cotton to silk to nylon to ..., and different thickness and opacity and some that cut the light almost completely, and others that let air through the fabric so your amps can breathe too, and even your Harmony remote will operate through some fabrics (most of them actually). => Thin black cotton fabric is only few dollars per square meter. For two or three bucks you got a lot! I don't like a multitude of blue lights (or red) when I'm watching a movie at night; very distracting!

See, Iceman came up also with his own original idea! Like he said, it doesn't have to be perfect, but effective! And not messy.

Iceguy, Clever solution. (I was going to say bright idea, but that would be silly)-

LOTR, WTF is that stuff on top of your speakers. *Please* don't tell me they are for resonance control. Please.
As for fabric coverings, nice idea. I did something similar with my old Hitachi RPTV in order to make it look better when positioned in my rack. However, I used felt and velcro. I took the one side of the velcro that has the plastic hooks and glued it onto the rack. The felt will then easily stick to the velcro, you do not need to use the other half of the velcro. It worked like a champ and was inexpensive, less than $5.00 for everything.
And, FWIW, Emo routinely tells folks to open the covers to their equipment for installing new amp boards and such. The fact that some of you wring your hands in dismay at similar practices is proof positive that this country is infested with candyasses...

Wow. All this arguement over tapeing the lights? Voiding the warranty? Disclaimers? May break something? Really...who cares? You know full well that if you open the case you will be voiding the warranty. It's no ones responsibility - not the OP who posted HIS mod on HIS machine, not the manufactures, nor the mod patrol reading this thread - except only the onwner of the XDA-1. If he wants to try this mod that someone else has performed on their own equipment, so be it. No one can think about holding anyone responsible for another persons actions. This is ridiculous. To the OP, thanks for showing us this mod. It will help those that are inclined to do this very much. Your work IS appreciated. Yes....there are a whole lot of candy-asses here. Jimmy

I second jmmyneutron. Im sure somebody will do it and mess it up and then have no clue why the warranty was void. I imagine it would have something to do with forgetting to replace the connector/losing the buttons. But this is something bobbyt figured out, had the initiative to do. He has nothing to warn us about. He was doing us a favor by imparting new knowledge on an issue for some people.
Some poster commented on the best way to lose a customer is to be a stickler about the warranty and you are so right!! From personal experience my friend right here! I had two power supply companies that politely tried to troubleshoot their PS and then just accepted my explanation of what happened and sent me an immediate replacement no questions asked and I would buy from both of them again despite the failure. If it had gone any other way, they would have lost a customer.

*** IMPORTANT UPDATE ***
Almost exactly 10 years and several moves later, I can report my XDA is still humming along unobtrusively. No explosions, the blue light has not escaped, and the DAC hasn't minded the thousands of power cycles first from my PC's 12v trigger and later being on a smart plug.

I solved the blue light quandary years ago and never loosened a single screw on the unit. I listen with my eyes closed.😑🙈🙉
