No matter what they do, it will never (any time in the reasonable future) look the way our eye actually see's real life images. It looks like a fake gimmick...because it's a fake gimmick ;p

The real movie is not on your screen but outside of it!

OK, because I am big into this kind of thing (and own a very expensive 3D TV!) I will do my best to put this in plain English so that everybody has a better understanding of what it is an how it works.
3D technology utilizes natures own way of creating depth within a picture field. This is done using two separate points of view of the same area (YOUR EYEBALLS). If you were to suddenly go blind in either eye tomorrow, you would be fine and live life just fine. However! you would lose most of your depth perception and may find yourself running into walls, etc. during your learning phase. The reasoning behind this is that your brain is an advanced calculator that uses both pictures from your eyeballs overlapped to create a depth to the field of vision.
Now! 3D technology works the same way. The glasses you are required to wear are active shutter glasses. What this means is that there is a shutter on each eye that opens and closes in a fraction of a second. The purpose to this is that your eyeballs each need to see a different still photograph (from 1 frame of your movie) just slightly off centered to create the 3D field. What happens is the glasses receive a signal from the TV that tells them which image is on the screen, the one designed for the left eye, or the right. The glasses take that information and open that eyes shutter allowing you to see that image with that eye only!
Why is this important? GREAT question! Your screen flickers at a frame rate (measured in HZ or FPS) The purpose to higher frame rate (and HZ) TV's is that it makes motion appear smoother, and because while displaying 3D content it requires that the frame rate be twice as fast as a comparable 2D TV to look good. (Because each eye views one image after another with a fraction of a second blink while the other eye looks). This is the reason why people often encounter nausea and similar feelings while watching 3D TV.
If you look carefully at the market, you will notice there are not 60hz 3D TV's. In fact 120 Hz 3D tv's are hard to find. This is because the frame rate needs to be very fast in order to display images fast enough for it to appear smooth to your brain. To give you a base line to play with, most movie theaters show approximately 30 FPS. (Frames Per Second) which varies by the speed of the film reel based on the individual film. As movies and TV get higher definition and people demand more clarity, costs go up as do frame rates. Costs because you need alot more (quantity) of frames and thus FILM to produce the same image at a faster rate. IMAX is famous for this. The theaters require rediculously large film reels not only because it is a wider picture (and wider film) but also films at a fast speed and mean you need much longer film spools. (Ever seen the inner workings of an IMAX theater? Our Museum of Science in Boston has one that you can check out!)
Now as for the future (pretty much NOW by the way). Consumers have been demanding 3D without the glasses. But how do you do this? The answer is simple! The same way the theaters do! Have you noticed your 3D glasses at the theater are not active? Heck they are usually crappy thin plastic or paper with colored lenses! The way it works in the theater is they use Polarized images (which the colored lenses are filters for!) to differentiate left and right. This means your left and right eyes see the image at the same time! How does that work? Well simple, both images are displayed at the same time! They are overlapped!
The solution for the home theater is to use individual pixels separated on the horizontal plain to display to images at once. Every other vertical pixel displays the image for left, and likewise the others for right! This way the new (non active) glasses will create a 3D image without the same nausea, batteries, expense, etc. This is how you can get Vizio's new TV which has a wider viewing angle, and non powered glasses to produce 3D. The problem is that to display this type of 3D it requires you to cut your picture quality in half! Because the same number of pixels you are used to watching display 1 image, must now display 2! Your 1080i movie? With passive 3D you will be watching in 540i!
This is both important and not. You invested in all those blu rays to get the 1080 i/p video quality. You will need it for the new passive 3D, but will only get half that quality. However your old DVD collection did have a very good picture, and that was only 480i/p. So how important is picture quality to you? If you want 3D with cheap glasses that are light weight and have a wide viewing angle, then passive 3D is for you. (This technology is just being rolled out this year guys, Vizio is just the first to mass market, all brands have the technology though) If you want to maintain that awesome picture you paid all of that money for, your best option is for the current active 3D.
For those of you scratching your head saying "but the movie theater has great picture quality!" I give you this challenge: compare your awesome home theater to the one at a rock concert. SQ is much better at home, but the WOW factor is in effect at the show. Live people performing, and LOTS of SPL!!! Likewise the massive size of the screen at the theater is what tricks you into thinking you are seeing better quality than you actually are.
The exception to this rule is IMAX. This is why alot of 3D films are only available in IMAX! Imax film is much higher resolution, and has alot more picture information per frame than standard film. This is why I want an IMAX in my house. I know,.... FAT CHANCE!! =o)

3-dee, ShmeeDee.... Bring on the holographic technology wherein the movie plays inside my home theater! I can also then interact with the actors, take on a role and actively participate in the movie. Fiction? I don't think so. Remember, you heard it here first.

Here at the Lounge we discuss all Audio/Video and more related life subject matters all in real 3D. So we don't need special Mickey Mouse pseudo 3D effects with 'shuttering glasses' to confuse our pictures! It looks fake, it is irratating and annoying, and I hate it! ;D

Does anyone remember how long it took for HD to materialize? I think that it was established earlier that the 3D effect for displays was minor and that it took a large screen size (>100") for the 3D effect to trigger the immersion feeling that makes it worthwhile. Still waiting for affordable & good 1080p 3D projectors to come out... That is really where 3D should have came out first.

How many Audio/Video stores are set up with a good 1080p 3D front Projector? ...And with a screen of 120" to 150"? Go to any Best Buy, Sony stores, Walmart, Future Shop (here in Canada), etc., and all you see is 3D with sreens from 40" to 60". And all those stores are very bright and simply not set up for the 3D enjoyment. Bring home a 3D Plasma TV set of 60", dim the lights, and you still don't get the true immersion! So, yes, I agree, you need at least (minimum) a 100" screen. Me think that 3D is best in the year 2016-2017 with a screen size of 150". ...Anything less is a money grab, and a much less than satisfying experience. Stick with 2D with anything less than 100", and for another five years. If not, you are contributing to this economy by not being wise!

3D will not ccatch on until they can make it affordable and effective without wearing goofy glasses. And I really don't see Joe Consumer sh!t-canning his newly-purchased 55" HDTV just so he can sit home and look like a dufus wearing goofy glasses.
I think that 2 years from now 3D will be a bad memory, kinda like HD-DVD was...

Yes! Ok then, just hold on for about two hours. Then tell me how you feel. ;D ...That's what they're saying too! ...A lot of other people. The 3D effect in the pic you posted is very visible - I also noticed the credits for "The Green Hornet" (2D showing) looked very 3D, but I think the moving background behind them helped.

Good news - the new 3D projectors from Sony and Mitusbishi (VW90 and HC9000) are running at 240Hz and have boosted brightness and colour compensation for the 3D modes. I really do think you need a really big screen for the 3D to look its best and that the glasses are a PITA. I am looking at one of these projectors to upgrade my old HC5000 - for their 2D performance. I might give the 3D a whirl for fun to see what I think or for some gaming, but I don't think it is really "there yet", but may be soon. Maybe the porn industry will become the real drivers for 3D (like they did with the video tape formats) if the movie studios don't start getting some more titles shipped.

I was at a local best buy yesterday. They have always had a 3D tv set up but it wasn't working. I asked a sales person and he told me they were planning on taking it down. Said there was so many 3D tv's in the back and hardly ever sell any. 3D needs to go away

No 3D is not here to stay. I frankly don't care about any of it. I just know the TV I'm getting for the bedroom with more than likely have 3D but that feature will never be used...unless the gf decides she wants to try it out, which I won't be around as I can't stand it!
