In my deeply depleted state of mind, I recall analog volume controls to be at their "max" around 12 o'clock, so that's probably why the dimple. Anything beyond 12 may add volume, but increases the distortion exponentially. I 2nd Lonnie to chime in and tell it like it is!

Well, I get what your saying but I don't think that applies here. Lets say I walk up to the XSP and turn the knob to say nine o'clock and the volume is at a moderate level. Then I use the remote and I can adjust the volume to anything from extremely low to blaring and the knob is still at nine o'clock. So the dimple is a floating reference that doesn't actually indicate anything. And what happens when I turn the system off and come back tomorrow? I'm sure the currently set volume level will display on power up but I just don't see where the dimple comes into play. Usually with this type of volume setup, the turning of the knob would be essentially the same thing as hitting the + or - volume of the remote. In fact sometimes the knobs don't even have stops, they just freewheel round and round. I believe this is how the Parasound P7 works. The volume knob is also used to select other functions and is actually just sending signals to an optical encoder as it is turned. It will be interesting to see how this is implemented as I believe this is EMO's first non motorized knob. One thing that seems certain based on that chip is that it will sound great!

The knob on the UMC-1 is not motorized. When you turn up the volume the knob doesn't move although if you turn the knob it does alter the volume. Now, the 1st UMC-1 that I had, which I returned, had a knob that DID move. Except it moved by itself. I know, everyone thinks I am crazy but I'm not - it really did move and that used to bother me that it moved not very much in relation or proportion to the volume so I'd wind up with a knob with the dimple/light at 2:00 or 3:00 making it seem like it was turned way up. The 2nd UMC-1 I had did not exhibit this weird behavior. And yes I was sober. ;D

By the way, I just reviewed the BD boxed set of Yojimbo/Sanjuro from Criterion. What great movies! .... now back to a life of eating mush.

I returned that one (not because of the knob) so I imagine someone out there has this haunted UMC-1 now! ;D By the way - I didn't care for Sanjuro. I thought it tried to be too cute. All those people in Sanjuro should go home to their mommies and eat mush.

I believe it is only the same knob as the USP but a totally different kind of actual volume control. I remember Lonnie saying way back when that it is a real hot rod chip that does the volume control. Ah, gotcha. I haven't done much homework on the XSP-1, since it's out of my price range at the moment. I'd better start eating my mush on a regular basis to stay sharp. ;D

It looks that everything what is out of stock on this moment will come on 15 February. Will the XSP-1 also be in stock on this date because Lonnie says in the latest podcast that they are on the boat ?

Jonas, they changed the location where they post podcasts. In this section, News and Updates, if you scroll down the list of threads you should see thread titles called "Podcast 12.30.10", and others with different dates. But I've not seen any podcast released since Decemeber 30, and that one didn't have Lonnie advising the XSP was 'on the water'. Can anyone correct me?

You are right the XDA-1 was on the water my fault. The preorder page will come up when they know what the exact shipment date is when they go on the boat.

I was all set to buy this thing last October, cash in hand. I followed the threads and podcasts and out of nowhere the XDA-1 emerged ahead of the XSP. I couldn't believe it, but signed up on the reserve list in a rash decision. As more info became available on the XDA, I realized it might actually meet my needs for a pre-amp and went ahead and ordered it when it became available. I'm real glad I did seeing as how the XSP seems to have been put on the backburner and I probably won't even get one now. Weird how that worked out.

Would anyone mind re-posting these on another site? I'm in Afghanistan and "personal storage sites" are blocked on the net here.
