Having heard this at Emofest, I would concur with this, and definitely a reason why I eagerly anticipate the XSPs arrival. A fully functional xsp was in use in the two channel room. The xsp feeding the xpa-1 was a match made in heaven. I'm ready, bring it on! ;D

Woulda had me sold 4 months ago.Got to demo a light-based LDR. Now you couldn't give me an XSP for free. My preamp section is solid.

I'm thinking LDR based sound gear (when available) is going to cost just a wee little bit more than the XSP-1 when it ships.
But I have been wrong before...

Honestly, I think it will be released in early 2012. We can hope for the holidays this year but both Lonnie and Dan told me January 2012. I echo your anticipation....

Anybody follow stereomojo? They have pics from the Rocky Mountain audio show and there is the XSP-1 in the rack looking good along with the X REF -6.2 speakers and a host of Emo stuff. Nice pic of big Dan. There is some sketchy story about Emo in there though.

im never in a rush for the new products.........reason being...look at the xda1, umc-1 and the ultra line of subs.....too many issues from the get go.....good things come to those who wait for the little annoying bugs to be worked out ;-)

Put me on the list of people screaming for a spec sheet. And details on the parts used inside; how are they superior to those used in the USP-1.? Better circuit design? Ditto. I want to know why the XSP-1 will be a better stereo preamp SQ wise, not feature wise. I don't need all the extra features except for maybe the adjustable slope on the high-pass / low-pass and eventually the balanced connections.
Tell me about the better power supply, capacitance, topology, wiring, gain stage, volume control, lower noise floor, and output stages.
And I'm not an EE, so rattling off a parts list by manufacturer doesn't help much; I don't know which caps and resistors and such are superior and which are mediocre.
Tell me in layman's terms that the guts of this thing differ from the the USP-1 the same way the innards of the XPA-1 do from the UPA-1. What is better inside and why. How does it lead to imrpoved SQ?
I'm looking hard at the Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE. But it's 2K, and has no bass management, which I very much desire as it makes integrating subs into a 2-channel system so much easier and smoother. Is the XSP-1 going to come close SQ wise?

I own a couple of pieces from Wyred4Sound (STI-500, MC7x250 amp, and DAC-2). Their stuff has a very very low noise floor and runs very cool temperature wise. Parts of the STP-SE preamp are incorporated into the STI-500 integrated. I am real happy with the musicality of the system. In my case the sub runs thru a Parasound C2 controller on the STI-500 HT bypass on movie use; dont need a sub for music in my system. I may end swapping out the old C2 with the XMC-1 when it finally shows up. Been on the pre-order for that for a couple of years.

That's an interesting comment...from what I have been told the UPA series and XPA series use a lot of the same parts, ie: the amplifier boards. just the XPA will use more of them with larger capacitors. The biggest sound difference between the UPAs and the XPA is the significantly better dynamics (air) that comes from the designed-in headroom of the XPAs. Looking at the test results, the noise and distortion levels are very similar and IM is not specified. If the parts were all that different one would expect to see distortion and noise specs much lower. The output terminals on the XPAS are different (and superior) on the XPAs but I doubt that has much influence on sound. I certainly hope that the XSP-1 uses superior parts because it will take that to surpass the performance of the USP 1 in terms of distortion and NOISE...a key element for any preamp is how black it is....
