Music is important to me too. I Have a lot of music files many of which are high def. I do use my system mostly for home theater but where I am demanding is re. sound, especially the sound of music. I'm hoping the Onkyo will please me in that regard.

I have been itching to hear my new 5508 for more than a week. No room on the rack for it so it's sitting in front of the rack. I need some cable extenders to hook it up in that position so today I'll get them. It'll have to stay there until I get help.

Come on Theresa, get with the program. ;D ;D I'm interested as well since the AV7005 isn't matching up well with the XPA-5 in my system. The sound is very clean, detailed and dynamic but I can't live with the thin tone. I prefer the fuller sound of the UMC-1 and Anthem gear. I'm curious to hear your comparisons between the sound of the UMC-1 and Onkyo.

I'm looking forward to hearing it too I've made more progress in getting this set up than I thought was possible a week ago. Its not lack of knowledge but is the need to lift my Emo amps and getting to the cables behind the rack. I am disabled so its a bit more difficult.

My local dealer guy is back from surgery, so hopefully I'll talk to him today and see which Anthem I'm going with and maybe have it installed by Friday's movie night.

Just have two speakers to attach to their amps and the t.v. to attach in order to have my new 5508 functional. Soon I will see if it holds up in comparison with the UMC-1.

This is a most excellent thread.
Like most people here, I too have been waiting on the eMotiva or Outlaw option for more than a year now. I just can't wait any more. I like Marantz (I'm currently using the SR7005 as my pre-) though I am looking for the XT-32 option. This brings me to the Onkyo 5508 or 5509 option. How do these compare to the Integra 80.3? I'm looking for the fine differences between these three so I can make my big purchase between now and the end of the year.
Thanks for the replies.
Grats on your most awesome purchase Theresa. I'm gonna follow along for your upcoming pics and experiences.

My helper came over this morning and got everything put back in place. After he left I realized that the midwoofer in the LF was not working, probably a nasty banana plug came loose. He will be back tomorrow afternoon to help pull the rack out and get that cable back in place.

yes, 8808 was a typo. I went back and corrected it. Yes it looks like a great deal. It even has an Android application for remote control while the Marantz only has one for the iphone. It also requires a new rack as the 5808 won't fit in the one I have. Then there's the problem of lifting all my equipment to put it in the new rack. The rack I have is a piece of junk anyway. I was sold on the Marantz but further research convinced me that the 5508 is preferable for me although it is quite ugly. I realize I'm late on this response as you already purchased the 5508, but just in case anyone else is reading this, there is an Android control app for the Marantz. It has been out since before I picked up my 7005 a year ago. I use it every morning to fire up my AV7005, and Jack Johnson is cranking through my system by the time I make it downstairs for coffee. ;D I'll note that there's no specific selection for the AV7005 in the app, but it has SR7005 support which controls the AV7005 just fine. There is also a "PDA" option on the AV7005 web control page that can also be used with any browser capable device, however the Android app is just slick by comparison.

The opposite of "lean" would be "fatty." Lol, something like that. By lean I mean the midrange is not as "full" sounding as it should be. The UMC-1 and Anthem both have a "fuller" sounding midrange that sounds better with my speakers. Some people might like the leaner/thinner sound but I prefer a little more fatter/fuller sound even though I might lose a little detail. The Marantz serves up plenty of detail, so much so, that it's picky about recordings. I just find myself missing the rich, natural sound the Anthem MRX300 provided when used as a PrePro. With that said, I have another 10 days to keep auditioning the Marantz to see if the sound grows on me or if things improve. I agree on the midrange (I think I noted that in my comments/review on the unit), and had I a different set of speakers I might not be happy with the AV7005 (note that I'm referring completely to 2-CH full range (no sub) music listening). I had picked up a pair of Vienna Acoustic Mozart to try out earlier this year, and I felt the Marantz paired much more favorably with my Rockets. The thinner sound was more evident to my ears with the Mozart as compared to the Rockets which sound wonderful with the AV7005. The VA's went back. Comparably, I felt the UMC-1 and Onkyo 886 I used to own had a more open/full sound to them, but on a whole the AV7005 just sounds better with music on the Rockets.

The Marantz makes an outstanding PrePro if matched with the right speakers. Its very musical, clear and dynamic. It just wasn't the best match for my Selahs. It's all about system synergy. :-)
