i think you have a problem, doug, and I'm going to set up an intervention. actually, talking about getting stuff cheap, regardless of whether or not the cd format disappears, I get lots of cds REALLy cheap on Amazon...used to use Half.com a lot, too. used/new stuff for $1 quite often. even with $2-$3 for shipping thrown in, it's way cheap. i still like my big shelf full of cds... I used to buy DVDs for super-cheap back when places like reel.com and the like were in business. I've also had a "few" memberships at columbiahouse.com. dvdtalk.com used to (and probably still does...I haven't checked it out in a while) list all kinds of bargains as well. Recently, I don't think i have bought a DVD in about 6 months...I should probably get on that!

Doug - must be a problem when trying to decide what you want to watch on any given evening. Nothing like searching through 2200 dvd cases if you don't have a specific movie in mind Dann - thanks for the heads up on Amazon. I just got into 2 channel music seriously over the past two years and my cd collection has just exploded during that time. Always on the lookout for more great music and all the music stores around here basically carry the same old selection.

seriously, you'll see a link under each CD that says 152 New and USed from $1.50 (or whatever works for that item). Click on that, and you'll just get a list of all the used copies, condition, etc. You can get a lot of stuff cheap. and with Amazon, if you ever have a problem with particular reseller, they will take care of it right away. Half.com is similar...it's owned by ebay, and looks similar, but there's no bidding. just buy everything outright. Both of these are great sources for books and movies, too. I don't know if they are like returns or something, but I have bought these supercheap and they arrive in like new condition. I have bought a few DVD-Audio discs this way.

Ok...time to recap. I started the project back in February 07. Starting with a completely virgin basement, I created four rooms...the largest being the Home Theater. It measures approx. 15 x 26, with a 8' 7" suspended ceiling. I'm not a carpenter or electrician, but I did do all of the work myself. Hence, the reason it took me so long...a lot of trial and error. Anyway, my goals were simple...build a room that was functional yet comfortable. It had to serve multiple family purposes, so I had to make a few compromises on seating. My electronics consist of a 67" Samsung 1080p DLP, an Oppo 1080p upconverting DVD player, and a PS3 (for the games and the Blu-Ray). For sound, I went with (of course) the Emotiva LPA-1/LMC-1 and have had no regrets. The front speakers are Polk Rti8, the center Polk Csi5, the surrounds Polk Rti6, and the rear surrounds Polk Rti4. Currently my sub is a Dayton model, but I'm going to have to upgrade as it's just not up to the task. I used all wall plates to make connections easy via banana plugs. All 12-gauge speaker wires are hidden in the walls for a clean look. For interconnects, I used all of Monoprice's premium cables...they're great! Anyway, forgive the poor quality of the photos (dust specks) as I think my cheap camera has had it (probably from all of the dust during the build process). The first two pictures are the hallway I had to make to get down stairs. I was unable to reuse any components and had to start from scratch...stringers, treads, risers, and all. I like hardwood mouldings...but price forced me to stretch out the final details over several months. This is a shot of the built-in cherry bookcases I made. Like I said, I'm no Norm (Yankee Workshop rules!), but I'm proud of the result. First time using high-end veneers...now I'm hooked. Some pieces like the doors and filler pieces I had custom made out of cherry solids. I finished everything in Tung oil and close to 100 hours in hand rubbing. The mouldings were all finished in piano black lacquer to match the pictures on the walls. Now for a tour around the room... Coming down the stairs (the door leads to the kids playroom): It's hard to see in this picture, but I added LED backlighting to the DLP. The colors cycle throughout the rainbow. Really makes a difference to ease eyestrain when watching a movie. Looking back into the room: Here's a look at the TV stand. The Samsung stand was unusable because of the large dimensions of the Emotiva gear. I reused the steel and glass, and had to custom build the the sides and back to accommodate the weight and , height and depth. I managed to simulate the look of the Polk units by using cherry wherever possible. And finally, a quick look at the wiring. I managed to turn a mass of spaghetti into something at least manageable. I integrated a separate 20 amp circuit just for the electronics, complete with a straight-run RG6 coaxial line for the signal and a Cat 5e jack for internet access. The next phase will be a whole-house 900-mhz wireless intercom and a CCTV system which will allow me to watch the kids playing on any TV in the house. All in all, it's been a long project. I'm glad it's over. I'd like to thank Emotiva for building a quality system...it's absolutely the cherry on top of the sundae!
