So I bought some used vinyl from various places. Most of it seems to be in good shape to a vinyl rookie and does not have any real visible defects or scratches. Not perfect by any means though. When I sat down today to enjoy some vinyl I heard tons of clicks and pops. It was enough to the point where I needed to stop listening. My hopes are just that the records need to be cleaned. Am I correct in thinking this and what is the best route to go about it. As others have said, cleaning is definitely the first thing you want to do. The Disc Doctor system is a good manual cleaning set that would work well. Make sure to get something to clean the stylus as well. With that said, used vinyl is a crap shoot; even cleaned it may be noisy. Groove damage cannot always be seen, so if may look fine to a visual inspection but be noisy as hell. However, typically if the record has that nice shine to it when it is held to the light, chances are it will play pretty well, if not great. You will get better at identifying a good one from a bad one. With all that, I still buy most my records used and overall have good luck. I still seem to think that originals are most of the time better than any current reissues if they are in good shape, so it is worth the risk. I think to really enjoy listening to vinyl, you have to also like some of the other stuff that goes into it; the hunt in finding a clean version of an old album, cleaning the albums, tweaking the turntable setup, etc. It is definitely not the easiest format to listen to, but IMO has the biggest rewards when done right. Good luck!

i heard judds MMF 5.1 tonight and i was quite impressed. The level of quality of vinyl is unreal. Its a very open and airy or natural sound. I like it quite a bit. I dont have any experience with vinyl at all, but i can say it sounds great. Its would just be a pain to clean the vinyl and what not. Its definately an upkeep product with the TT and the vinyl but i can see how its making a comeback for sure.

The vinyl nOOb in me is coming out. While shopping online for some LP's I notice that there are quite a few import or foreign pressings of LP's. Just wondered if there is a difference between these and anything domestic?

The reason you see a lot of imports is because there out of print in the USA an for there being any difference that depends on the quality of the vinyl & mastering that they use

I did not realize that it was potentially mastered to a different spec. Did I understand that correctly?

Indeed. A vinylphile will tell you that the Beatles Revolver is mixed differently and song are in a different order then the Britsh Parlaphone version...it being sonically superior in every way to the American Capitol pressing. Some Japanese pressing (re-issues) are better than their American counter-parts as well. Doing your homework is important if you are going to be serious about vinyl. I was hoping that figuring this out would make it easier for me to pick up some LP's, but I guess I will have to start doing my homework. Speaking of vinyl... I think I'm going to have a listen to the new batch that just showed up on my door step.

Yes like I said it depends on the copies & where your getting it from it should say on there some ware how it was mastered but usually if it`s an import it`s out of print here or a master copy

You will find like with CD`s some labels are better then others on there recordings maybe not as bad as it has got in with CD`s but you will learn to appreciate some of the finer engineers of the recording industry an what they contributed to the art , in vinyl you get what you pay for so it defiantly pays to do your homework & I think that goes for CD`s these days

Looking for some solutions to store my vinyl. I don't have a lot of pieces, but I can see the pile growing more and more. Did a google search and found a few pieces, but many were large wall sizes cabinets. Just curious what everyone else used to store their vinyl?

Work great and are very affordable. www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/series/09064/

Thanks for the link. That would work, but I would prefer something in an espresso finish to match the rest of my stuff. I know, I know... picky.

Not necessarily in the class mentioned above is my Dual CS506. I got this to stand in for my Dual 1229Q which is in need of a tune up. In my haste to dust this off prior to taking the picture, I snapped the stylus off the Signet MR 5.0 me cartridge. So now in it's place is a brand new Grado Prestige Gold. Am I ok with this setup, or should I consider uprgrading?

About upgrading... Are you happy with the current sound or does it leave you wanting more? If your happy keep it. If you think there is room to go then consider upgrading.
