How many vinyl fans are out there? I've got a ton, but never play it. I'm thinking of adding a phono preamp and resurrecting the turntable for my HT/music system (the long-haul project). What kind of recommendations do you have? How about an Emotiva someday?

I highly doubt an Emo TT would ever come out...but then again Lonnie had a ipod tube amp proto-type laying around in his office....

What kind of recommendations do you have? How about an Emotiva someday? I started with a NAD PP-2 pre-amp which does a good job and can be found for around $100. Now I use a Bellari VP130. Pro-ject also makes good phono pre-amps. I have a Music Hall MMF5 turntable.

I have a VPI HW19Jr with a Mark III platter, Audioquest PT8 tonearm and a Sumiko Blue Point cartridge. I'm using this with a Bryston BP25 with a built in MM phono stage.

Good to see that there are some vinyl fans here on the lounge. With my system nearing completion (say it isn't so), I need something else to spend money on and keep it from being complete. So I thought, hey why not vinyl.
Looking to get in on the lower end of things, but not garage sale stuff. I admit that I'm a noob when it comes to vinyl, so tech me fellow Emo friends.

I went and demoed some TT's today at a local dealer. I listened to the Rega P1 and the Music Hall MMF 2.2. To me they were 2 different sounds. The MMF 2.2 was more laid back and smooth. The P1 had a more upfront sound which I really liked, but the clarity was not there. They can also get some others such as Thorens, but I have no way to listen to them. Thoughts?

I'd personally go for an MMF-5.1 or a used 7.1. I was looking at a used MMF-9.1 a few months ago but just don't have the funds right now. The market is so screwed up you can get some awesome deals on the used stuff. The Rega's are nice but I think the MMF's are step up and come with some amazingly awesome carts for the price.

In talking with the dealer he felt the same way about the MMF series and stated that the downfall to the Rega was the cartridge. The way I look at it right now there would be too many upgrades to the Rega to get it on par with the 2.2, but as you stated there are some good deals on some TT's out there.

This is just my opinion but out of the two I would go for the MMF 2.2 but like dougie said & I agree I would go a step up or two & also see if you could get an upgraded cartridge

This will not be my main source of listening. I just decided the other day that I wanted to give vinyl a try. Maybe if I enjoy it I could upgrade down the road.

Then the MMF 2.2 is a good start & you can always upgrade the cartridge later for better fidelity if you end up liking vinyl , make suer you get a record cleaner & brush for the LP & needle, the needle doctor is a good place for though`s & just get the budget stuff there good enough to start with

I have some more reading to do, but I may be listening to some vinyl sooner than I thought.

With some patience you should be able to find a used MMF5 with a better cartridge for the same price as a new MMF2.2. I think I paid ~$400 for mine with a Goldring 1012GX MM cartidge and new Gyger II stylus.

I was actually looking at both of those. Retail price for the MMF 5.1 is almost double the price of the 2.2. Since I am just getting into it I don't know that it is worth it to me. I do have a couple of other items on my short list, too.

Yeah.... well I am always of the mind that if I'm going to do something I like to do it right the first time. I've been looking at MMF-9's and thinking of purchasing one sometime towards the middle to end of next year. Although I have had quite a bit of experience with the MMF-5 and MMF-7. The MMF-7 is beautiful and the 5 looks great to. But as always we have to do whats inside our budget.
