For those of us who have been waiting for an X Series 7 channel amp seems it is now on the way!!!!! Won't miss that XPR-7 now!!
I cannot wait. Should be brilliant!!! Looking forward to all the details being released. Thanks Dan for letting this out of the bag.
(from the UPA-500 thread, but thought a proper new topic appropriate for this slice of heaven....and for those that might miss it hidden in there!)
Re: UPA-500 « Reply #119 Today at 8:06am »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You know it's a coming.... XPA-7.... 7x200 RMS, all channels driven. Soon.
4RU tall.
Sweet.
Goodnite! Big Dan

THIS is exactly what will make me (and others) go for the UMC and XMC when they're ready. I was not looking forward to trying to drive a full set of seven Mirage OMD-15, OMD-C1, OMD-5 speakers with a UPA-7 or using up 9U of rack space (of 14U) in a built-in cabinet just for power amps.

This is very positive news. But as simple as Dan's statement is, I'm having difficulty truly understanding its intent:
a). The XPA-7 will be 7 x 200 wpc RMS
b). The XPA-7 will be 7 x 200 wpc (ALL CHANNELS DRIVEN)
I do't find these to be one and the same description. I am thinking that in order to achieve (b), the XPA-7 would have to be more than 200 wpc RMS. Can someone give some light. I can't think with all this excitement I'm feeling!

Just think of a XPA-5 with 2 more channels.

I would have to agree with this as well, and it's probably a conservative figure just like the rest of the X series power amplifiers.

I was hoping to hear exactly what your responses indicate. This amp will have "GIANT BALLS" and the same size as the UPA-7. Now, this is an audiophile power amp. Let us see if it will have separate triggers for 2 channel and 7 channel operations or "unused channel standby" These would be extremely great feature pluses, and would make this amp a volume seller. Please include either of these features Emo. You'll be well rewarded ;D!

Will be interesting to see the insides of this baby. Will it be roughly the same size as a XPA-5? If so how do they manage to fit 7 beefy channels in and keep it cool running....hmmmmm....I know this was managed with the UPA-7, but the XPA series seem to have much larger heatsinks etc etc.....hmmmmmm.....so many questions-

Can someone give some light. I can't think with all this excitement I'm feeling! As we all know, Emotiva posts their amp specs other than the deceptive amp specs for most AVR receivers. These are both short for 200 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms at 0.1%, 1kHz will all 7 channels driven simultaneously. That is a total of 1400 watts RMS/8 ohms when all 7 channels are operating. I presume the 4 ohm figure will be 300 watts. This is simply a 7 channel version of the XPA-3 and XPA-5. RMS is simply a current (but supposedly incorrect term to the purest) term for steady and not peak power. In this case we have 200 watts of RMS continuous power for each of 7 channels while all 7 channels are operating at the same time (not just two channels). If only 2, 3 or 5 channels are operating then the output watts per channel should be higher. Hope that helps. I think this is a great move on Emotiva's part and will put a wrench in the sales of another online direct company that has several 7 channel models. Their potential customers will now have a comparable amp for considerably less dough.

Good for them to make a higher power version! I'm betting it will see well!

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a bit bigger transformer in the upcoming XPA-7 as well.

Lonnie used to say that they could not make an XPA-7 because the wall outlet would be unable to deliver the current demands. I wonder if this XPA-7 will come with duo power cords or will require you use a 230 V/20 A dedicated circuit to avoid sucking the wall outlet dry during highly dynamic passages. It will be interesting to see what little tricks Lonnie has incorporated into the new XPA-7 to overcome this potential problem.

Gee I hope the XPA-7 is launched this summer!!! (or winter here down under;)

Hi guy's,
Think of an XPA-5 with two more amp blades, a bigger power supply, and the chassis height raised by 1RU to accommodate the revised PS and amp modules.
That would look like an XPA-7.
With more blue lights, of course!
Cheers, Big Dan

Hmm... Didn't you say 4U the other day? Sounds like it will likely be 5U high instead like the XPR-7 was supposed to be AND the PA 7-350 is? That certainly seems more plausible given how packed it would be. What about number & type of power cords and required dedicated 120/240 amp circuits? I know this is inexact, but 200W*7 = 1400W++. At 120V, that's like 12amps+, which is approaching the 80% max load on a dedicated 15amp circuit. And at 4 ohms, this would be more like 350w*7 = 2450W++. This is over 20amps at 120v! The Sherbourne PA 7-150 seemed to be up against this wall. And the PA 7-350 had to go with 120V 20AMP dedicated circuit, or even a 230V 30amp for "commerical or lab conditions". www.sherbourn.com/index.php/home-theater-products/home-theater-amplifiers/68-sherbourn-7-150www.sherbourn.com/index.php/home-theater-products/home-theater-amplifiers/30-pa-7-350I wonder how heavy this will be? Over 100lbs? O.o It was all I could do to load my XPA-1s & XPA-5s into my rack solo. Sherbourn PA 7-350 Specs: Don't get me wrong -- I would probably buy one regardless

Now any chance letting slip whether its launch will be around the same time that the XMC-1 appears???

I know this is inexact, but 200W*7 = 1400W++. At 120V, that's like 12amps+, which is approaching the 80% max load on a dedicated 15amp circuit. And at 4 ohms, this would be more like 350w*7 = 2450W++. This is over 20amps at 120v! You would be correct if you were sending a sine wave through a resistor at full power 24/7. Good thing music doesn't work that way. Also besides the transformer size (which is what would ultimately let you do the above) you have secondary capacitance which stores up charge for very demanding passages. This lets you design an amp with a smaller transformer so that you don't suck your 120/15A circuit dry during those times. Do you know how big and heavy a 3000VA transformer would be? ...try about 60lbs and you would need more than 15A to energize it. ..and you would need to design a soft start circuit, etc. Lonnie knows what he is doing. Now the bigger XPR being a different topology (H vs A/B for the XPAs) can be done very differently than above. This is why they run much cooler with smaller supplies.
