well, i'm bumbed out. i purchased a pair of ERM 6.2's from area 51 at emofest, they assured me they were tested and worked fine. they also told me there is no warranty and it's as is. i was leary and asked what happens if i get them home and they don't work, i was again told not to worry that they had been tested and they worked. so i paid. i just got them to my office at work to set them up and test them and they didn't sound right.
of course i realize why they don't right, one speaker has almost no sound coming out of it while the other is blasting away. yep, i switched L&R on the speakers and the problem followed the speaker. i'm gonna contact emo to see what they will do about this.
this is what i was so afraid of the terms no warranty/as is. while i would hate to have to pay to send the one back for repair, i would rather pay for that and hope that they repair it no cost to me and ship it back or that they tell me i have to pay for everything.
these are the chances we take at area 51.
i'll let you guys know how this all turns out. i am hopefull that emo won't leave me holding the bag on this. so far with all my dealings with them over the years, 3 amps, 2 DAC's (which i haven't yet hooked up) and 2 emofests this is the first snag i've hit with them. i'm gonna put them to the test on this.
i only put this in the emofest thread because this was something i purchased during emofest.
i have taken some time to do some looking & checking and found out a couple of things:
the speaker internally is good and works.
the jumper & binding post assembly don't work well with bare wire or pin connectors.
i took some pictures with my iphone and to not hog up the screen size (people seem to hate when you do that) i will post a link for each picture.
here is a picture of the binding post with no conductors in play at all and they are driven all the way down.
images4.static-bluray.com/htgallery/117465_full.jpgthe speakers in my office were vintage paradigm performance series 3SE speakers (8" woofers i miss the low end on them, but we can talk about that later) the digms used pressure pin-hole type connectors so i ran 2 conductor cable to them with pin type connectors because i personnaly don't like using bare wire. here is a picture of the binding post when a pair of pin connectors are engaged
images.static-bluray.com/htgallery/117466_full.jpgthe first thing you notice in the above picture is that the section with no binding post are driven all the way down to hold the jumper--the section with the binding pin connector engaged does not go all the way down; it's not putting any pressure on the jumper on it's end.
here is a picture with both the positive and negative connections engaged, notice neither of the post engage either of the jumpers.
images2.static-bluray.com/htgallery/117467_full.jpgthat was the problem, no matter which set of post i used, not enough pressure was being placed on the other end of the jumper and i would lose some contact with the other binding post (be it tweeter or woofer) and it would play back almost nothing.
it took me a couple of try's to figure this out. i swapped the speakers and as i mentioned the problem followed the speaker. at first i thought either the crossover wasn't working right or the woofers were bad because it was almost no sound. the other channel was blasting. see the gap it's between 1/8 - 1/4"!
i suspect either the post are not level or the jumpers are bend or something like that. i did create a work around that i'm gonna put in place tomorrow when i go to work. i made two pair of bi-wire jumpers and am going to simply remove the post jumpers all together. yes, i know i could have probably simply put banana plugs in place of the pin connectors but since the speakers are bi-wireable, why not!
here is a picture of the bi-wire jumpers i made
images3.static-bluray.com/htgallery/117468_full.jpgi will remove the pin connectors and connect the jumpers to the amp end with the yellow in-line splices (yep, they work great) they are the pressure, non-reversible type (you have to cut them out). i've used them before with absolutely no problem and hey, it's my office so no problem.
i have no doubt that this will resolve the problem as i temporarily used the pin connectors, taped in place in the connection port for banana plugs for both and everything worked perfectly. so out with the pin connectors, out with the jumpers and in with the bi-wire connection jumpers.
i'll post back here tomorrow with the results.
i wonder if other folks have had this problem using bare wire (12awg or larger) or pressure connectors like me?
again, sorry if folks are unhappy about me posting this in the emofest thread, but i did get these at emofest so it's kinda relevant, kinda.
i'm sure i will be able to paint a once again rosie picture of emotiva and products purchased at EMOFEST (too bad i can't get that echo chamber effect for this!)
