Looks like the guy who built my Warpspeed LDR for me is burning in a DODD inline tube buffer that I get to try out. First time hearing a tube "pre". This hobby rules. Where else will you get people willing to let you try out their very expensive gear. Let us know what you think after you've had some time with it. Honestly, with all I had heard about tubes over the years, I expected my Dodd preamp to sound flabby or bloated. Boy was I surprised!

Umm, you *do* know that you're not gonna be hearing a tube pre, right? But hey, it sounds like it might be a fun way to spend a rainy weekend...

Yeah, that's why I put it in quotes. LDR+buffer, no active stage.

Anyway, this sub is such a relief. It sounds frickin' awesome in so many ways. I will not hesitate to add some more of these. Review to come.

I think he picked up an Epik Legend. The Empire/Legends are supposed to do pretty well with Maggies.

Yeah, a Legend. Kinda funny because at AC I just bumped into a guy who owns a pair, and also has maggies. In my research on this brand I found a ton of maggie owners running em.
I know that Rythmiks are better on paper, but the interesting thing about subwoofers (unlike speakers, or amps, or any other piece of audio gear), is that you can just keep on adding more of them to your system and this greatly improves performance.
So my strategy here was to find the best sub for maggies that I could afford to have multiples of. Gotta think a pair of these, with 4 twelve inch drivers just loafing along without much effort, and placed in the room to maximize each other, would slaughter a single Rythmik. And these are good drivers too, designed to be used in an audiophile rig, you can just hear the lack of distotion, and the parallel drive system yields zero box vibration, none, so all you hear is the bass, period. There's plenty of footage out there of the Empire, the larger HT version, pumping bass hard, with glasses of water or coins laid upright on top of the cabinet, and they don't move! Great design here.
So the plan is.. get some more of these, eventually, and then one day move them out to the living room system, retire the ported 10 I have, and try out some GR Research/Rythmik open baffle H-frame servo subs.

While I'm sure the Rythmiks are nice, I was never comfortable with how they work. I'll stick to the basics. While the Epik's don't have giant dB output numbers, they always sound good. They also sound great for HT. Good to know that they work well with those Maggies.

I am not in agreement here so much. Having owned both the Maggies and the GR Researh version of this sub, it is my opinion that there are better subs for these speakers. But please know this is really OPINION based and should not be taken as law or a put down. I now use 2 Velodynes for music and 2 Emos for movies and I feel this is the best match I have heard. I have moved on the Martin Logans and the match is even better and as critical. IMO of course

this isn't a subwoofer, it's a musical instrument designed to play bass.... very very nice.

Good deal RClark! It's great to see there are nice alternatives to Rythmik subs. Not that I have anything against them (never heard any) but the Epiks line up better with my budget.

Man.... the thought of a few more of these, with some properly placed diy traps has me in goosebumps.

Update: Maggies have left the factory and are on a truck to Cinci! They should be in my hands Tuesday at the latest! So, at least I get to give them a little listen before Emofest!!!

Great news!! Finally! ;D I've been checking this thread at least once daily hoping for a ship/delivery update. It's fair to say that many of us are (almost) as excited as you are. Now you'll have something to talk about at Emofest.

I am thinking you need to invite me over, I am not so far away and you may need help with making the new amp or listening to some music. Just sayin....

LOL! It's not really that far at all. I just spent a week in Santa Claus, IN. Where are you in SW Indiana? (I'm a native Hoosier myself...originally from near Warsaw, went to high school in Pendleton, and college at Purdue.)
