Trouble with 3 or 5 or even 7 hi-power channels of amplification in a single chassis is eventually you will need at least a 20 amp service TO the amp.

I am contemplating the purchase of a pair of xpa-1Ls but I am also considering upgrading my Paradigm Studio 20s v2 speakers to the latest v5. I wonder what which would make the biggest difference in sound quality-upgrading the amp or the speakers. By the way, I have the XPA-200 on my fronts for now and it sounds great even compared to having them on my xpa-5 which I was doing previously. Thanks.

My opinion is speakers will always make the most difference in your sound. Yes, it has been quite awhile since I have upgraded my Paradigm speakers(13-14 years) but I have to admit that the XPA-5 amp was probably best upgrade I have made since having these speakers with the Oppo 105 coming in second.

Since you had great sounding speakers already once you added a proper source, and amplification you took your system to the next level. Nothing better than sitting back and enjoying the excellent sound quality of this hobby.

The biggest advantage of the XPA-1L is its ability to do 35 watts in Class A. If your listening volumes suite that profile then there is no doubt that you will hear a step up in sound quality. If you're not interested in Class A and your typical volume levels are above 35 watts then a pair of XPA-100 would do the job for a worthwhile saving, while retaining the cred of a pair of monoblocks . For a further strep up in grunt an XPA-2 would suite that requirement, again at a cost less than a pair of XPA-1L's.
There are no bad choices in any of those 3 power amps, they are all top level performers within their design brief.
Cheers Gary

Hi mdanderson, I had an XPA-200 powering my main speakers for about 13 months. Last year I upgrade to a trio of XPA-1L amps for LCR. For the mains, the sound quality improvement from XPA-200 to XPA-1L was fairly subtle. No regrets though, because these amps ticked all the boxes on my wish list: size/weight, power handling, monoblock operation, and fully differential circuitry. The selectable high/low bias is a nice bonus feature (although I can't really hear a difference between the two bias levels). Would I purchase the XPA-1L trio again? Yup. As others have mentioned, speakers usually offer the largest noticeable change in the system. I just upgraded my main speakers last month and that was an enormous improvement, much larger than the XPA-200 to XPA-1L upgrade. If you're curious, by all means give them a try. They are excellent amplifiers. In my case, the -1Ls are "end game" amps for me. No more upgrades needed.

Should have my 1L's by Thursday, can't wait to listen to my Vienna's Mozart Grand sing in class A while going fully balanced from my Oppo 105 dac.

Crimsonpiper, So happy to hear of your purchase. I'm sure you will love them the moment you fire them up. I wish you a long long great relationship with your new amps, they will serve you well!
Peace,
Nick

I really don't know what my listening volume level is in terms of watts but I do know that I listen at rather low to moderate levels for music and movies. I admit that I don't know much about class A amps or how they sound but those on this forum seem to be very impressed by them for the most part. Thanks again for the suggestions.

I really like to hear a lot of detail in my music and the 1Ls sound like they may fit the bill. Like I told Gary, I really don't know much about Class A amps but I really like MC and 2channel music. Thanks for your honest input.

Peace, Nick Thank you for your kind words Nick. I do have a good feeling about my choice... hopefully it will work out fine so later I can add an XPA-3 for my C & surrounds.

Got two of the seven XPA-1Ls setup and let me just say they produce some beautiful music. The Sherbourn PA7350 was a great amp, but could be clinical (sterile) at times. These beauties just deliver a lush, organic sound. I will be listening to a lot more music from now on in my HT room.

Maybe I should cut my celebration short. Three of the seven amps has a nasty buzzing sound coming from the speakers for about a minute and then fades to silence when the amp first starts. Should I worry about this? I already have Emotiva sending me a new amp to replace one that had an XLR connector problem. I really don't want to have to cross ship three more. What should I do?

Are you by any chance running a power conditioner? Try it without direct to the wall. It is also possible that your cables may be a bit jacked up. Swap them with the amps that are working fine. Having 3 of them buzzing sounds strange which may indicate a local problem (or not - I don't know). Sounds like a loop of some kind to me.
